and how does that work, jane, these medications? how do they work with the individual who has an addiction? well, one of the things they do is to replace the drug that had been used that someone was addicted to. like, if you were using heroin perhaps you would need another dose of heroin every 4 to 5 hours to avoid going into withdrawal, just simply to keep from getting sick, whereas if you were on methadone it would last more than 24 hours. so it would level it out; you wouldn't get the high or the euphoria that you got with heroin, but it would prevent the withdrawal so that you could begin to normalize your life and get back into employment and improve your family situation; quit having to steal to support your habit. and dr. clark, if an individual was going to be using a medication-assisted therapy to really overcome their addiction, if they decided to really relapse, or if they relapse, what would happen to that individual under these medications? well i think the most important thing is that the individual has engaged either

and jane, what types of treatment, is it a different type of treatment for a person with a co-occurring condition? no. ideally it ought to all occur within the treatment program where the person's being treated for both their substance abuse and their mental health issues. you can't treat one and then treat the other, they're often intertwined. people may self-medicate for their mental health issues. so the idea is that it all be treated within the same program. you don't go someplace else to get treatment. and we're seeing more and more co-occurring treatment programs coming in, and actually much more effective because they can address both issues at the same time. let's talk about office-based treatments. obviously we've established, mark, that methadone is not offered at the present time through physician offices, other than for pain, for the treatment of pain. do we see a trend that in the future that might be the case? i think that as patients become more stable, and as we have a number of patients who are extremely stable in our treatment system, they should move out of the clinic

we're joined by jane lubchenco, the government's top ocean scientist. good evening, thank you very much. this vast discrepancy, instead of almost all the oil being gone, we're finding, according to these scientists that almost all of the oil is still in the water. how do you reconcile these two findings? >> hi, george. we remain confident that the numbers we released earlier are very reasonable estimates of what happened to the oil. as you know, we set about trying to understand a question that everybody's been posing, where, in fact, did all that oil go? 4.9 million barrels. we can directly measure some of that, the oil that was captured from the well, and we can estimate with some degree of confidence the other amounts, how much was skimmed and burned and we think that's a quarter of a percent. another quarter has been evaporated by our estimates. that leaves 50%, so, we think 50% of the oil has been, has disappeared from the system. another quarter has been dispersed, either chemically or naturally, and the other quarter is residual that we can't eas
