nick janes shows us searching that canal was no easy task. >> reporter: searching through this canal is difficult for several reasons. first of all, it's so large. it's about 80 feet wide and in some spots 20 to 25 feet deep. the fresh tire tracks are found several hundred feet away from where we are standing on the other side of that fence. there are some underground tubes that route the water to this other side of the canal large enough for a car to fit through. another thing to pay attention to is how swiftly the current is moving. it's moving deceptively quickly fast enough we are told to carry a car hundreds of feet from where those tracks were to this side of the canal. originally we told perhaps they would try to use sonar technology to map what's under water. but because of the current, it's difficult to use the sonar apparatus. the person would have to hold it would have trouble keeping it steady because of the water moving so quickly and so that would obscure what's underground. so what they have been doing is just using a rope on the either side and just drag the canal and
