jane, what is a prevention-prepared community? that is a really good question, ivette, and it is a term i think we are going to be hearing a lot more. the notion of a prevention-prepared community is all of the systems in the community, be they the health care sector, the business sector, families, schools, neighborhoods, law enforcement, they are all prepared to create a prevention system for the community that really does increase the likelihood that everybody will be making an important contribution together and rates of these problems will actually decrease over time. dr. greene, you mentioned screening and brief interventions. many people in the audience may not know what this program is all about. do you want to tell us a little more? i will be happy to, yvette. one of the things that howard university and howard university hospital has identified was that we have a large population of at-risk drinkers, substance abuse patients, and that we wanted to find a way to try to really help our population. we didn't have enough soci

the carousel is a gift from artist jane wolentes, a merry go round enthusiast from way back. up in new jersey. i grew up with carousels. i love them. >> osgood: so much so that when she heard of a damaged carousel going up for auction in 1984, she and her husband david snapped it up. >> reporter: how much did you pay for it? >> $385,000. >> osgood: for the next 22 years jane and her small staff painstakingly restored the carousel to its original splendor spending $15 million of her own money. it was then kept in an empty warehouse until a permanent home was found. >> reporter: where exactly do you want it placed? >> osgood: jane and her husband had long dreamed of putting the carousel in the new brooklyn park but winning the pool turned out to be a merry go round itself as jane recalled this past week. >> i might have seemed confident at that time. but i really wasn't. there was a long road ahead. >> osgood: a road that ended thursday evening at the carousel's new home. designed by a prize-winning architect john now vel. >> it's the perfect place for it. i'm glad we persevere

jane, final thoughts? one final thought: i think it's really helpful when communities have people like jordan and wendy, our doctor, involved in these kinds of efforts. it's so essential to have young people become good community problem solvers and its really, really important to have our professionals in the community working on these problems, not only from a programmatic aspect but from a systems change and policy aspect because we all know there's good programs out there, but it's really necessary to take them to scale and institutionalize them. very good. and if communities want to get engaged and involved, there's no better opportunity than to do so during national recovery month . recovery month is celebrated every september. there are materials online that you can use, and it's really looked at and prepared all year round, so you can get engaged in recovery month all year round. we hope that you do so, and we hope that you continue to spread the word that prevention works, treatment is effective,
