jane warner and harvey milk plaza is not large. those are small and they've restrain space. there is a very diverse array of people using these spaces and it is important that everyone be able to use them. most public spaces in san francisco, while freely available to the diversity of the community, they have roles. we have a very extensive parts code governing the parts system. none of these roles have undermined the freedom of the enjoyed community. rather, these rules make sure that these spaces are usable by everyone. through a quirk in the law, the jane warner and harvey milk plaza is not covered by any of the rules typically applied to public spaces. recently san francisco has added a significant number of public spaces, with jane mourner being the first such space. we have turned parking spots. it has been expanding and i know it will continue to expand in the future. now is the time to make sure that these new spaces, which are not parks or sidewalks, have basic rules in place to make sure they are expendable by everyone. this legislation is basic and limited. contra

i love what jane was saying. just can't resist bringing up the topic, at least if those people are out there suffering, it is a reminder that this thing is cunning, it may have contributed here. a couple things i want to say, though, as i was listening to the reports, we are learning a little something here. the fact that they aborted the resuscitation attempt in the hotel room after only about 20 minutes tells you that she was down for quite a while probably. she was not transported, they didn't continue cpr. that's kind of a tell that this is something that was already fruitless once they had started resuscitation attempts. there's something in the story there that needs to be understood. and then, number two, you and jane mentioned that she was in treatment several times and people that have chronic conditions like addiction like this that have been troubling and in danger for so many years, you said her last treatment was in may of 2011, if i were treating her, i would ask her to sit out a year or two and not

jane, final thoughts? one final thought: i think it's really helpful when communities have people like jordan and wendy, our doctor, involved in these kinds of efforts. it's so essential to have young people become good community problem solvers and its really, really important to have our professionals in the community working on these problems, not only from a programmatic aspect but from a systems change and policy aspect because we all know there's good programs out there, but it's really necessary to take them to scale and institutionalize them. very good. and if communities want to get engaged and involved, there's no better opportunity than to do so during national recovery month . recovery month is celebrated every september. there are materials online that you can use, and it's really looked at and prepared all year round, so you can get engaged in recovery month all year round. we hope that you do so, and we hope that you continue to spread the word that prevention works, treatment is effective,

i think we tell parents... both jane and jordan talked about the role of parents and how important in each of their stories that parents have. they are the first line to see their young people changing their behaviors, as jane was saying, some of the signs that are out there. we need to tell parents and remind them, first and foremost, that addiction is a disease and it is not their fault. and it is not their young person's fault. they need to know that as well. and if they do what jane said, listen, watch their young people, be interactive with them, get to know their friends, they need to know the signs of what is a normal life for a young person. and when their child begins to act a little differently than they used to act 2 or 3 years ago, that should send some signals to go get help. jordan, your parents obviously saw signs in you. they may not have understood it, and that's okay. we are not asking everyone to be clinicians, but when you begin to see your young person changing their friends drastically, when they start to seclude themselves or they just don't seem right, that's t

earlier today, i spoke to jane arraf of al jazeera english in baghdad. jane arraf, welcome. tell us more about the targets here. they were clearly aiming at shiite neighborhoods and institutions? >> they were for the most part, jeff. mostly shi'a neighborhoods. in fact, even some in... near a shi'a shrine. but they were also aimed at security forces. some of them were gunmen opening fire on police here in baghdad and mystifyingly one of the targets appeared to be an elementary school. this was in the town of hillah... near the town of hillah south of baghdad where a car bomb exploded just outside the gates of a primary school injuring dozens of children. so a wide range of targets but all of them with a common denominator of seemingly seeking to destabilize security services here and instill fear-- which they did. >> brown: well, what is known about the insurgents who might have carried this out? who are they and tell us more about their possible aims? >> everyone's blaming it on al qaeda.
