, and jane filed that report.e, you were talking about the devastation in gaza, the reconstruction material that is needed. but i would like focus on fishing for just a moment. because during the conflict israel only allowed gazan boats to sail 5 miles from the shore. and now there is a restoration of the preconflict perimeter. and they will look at an extension of more than 22 kilometers out to sea. so we'll have to wait and see if that extension will be implemented. but when you look at this, how much difference does it actually make to the livelihoods of the people in gaza? >> reporter: it makes a huge difference to the livelihoods of the fishermen,esten -- essentially they can only fish tiny fish, so this will make a huge difference for them. there are about 4,000 fishermen across gaza, however, that is a tiny fraction of the population in gaza of about 1.8 million people. they will of course benefit from more fish, but realistically when you look at the siege on gaza, the fishing issue is a small one compared

jane wells is in los angeles with the story. jane? >> tyler, so far that large forest fire up there has burned close to 12,000 acres and injured 12 people. the cost to fight it 20 million bucks, not including the marijuana that's burned. the lodge fire in mendocino county. county sheriff tom alman tells cnbc, i know there have been several marijuana gardens that have burned up. he said at a local community meeting, many residents were concerned about what might happen to their marijuana even though the grows were illegal. he said, quote, let's talk about the "m" word, we are not willing to use this fire to perform marijuana investigations but we're also not going to put firefighters on the lines to protect it. fire crews have deeded access to lock gates on private roads going into the backcountry to fight the fire and so far have had no problems getting through. the other issue, however, has been the 750 inmates helping to fight the fires. the sheriff says he's had to add law enforcement personnel to make sure the inmates don't grab s

jane ferguson joins us with the latest on the cease-fire. >> reporter: just in the last hour, the newsas broken, of course, that the palestinians have agreed to a 72 hour cease-fire. >> that's on the record. now, in terms of the israel delegation who had left these negotiations, we are hearing records in the israeli media, the israeli delegation talking out saying that they will come if there is a ceasefire, that they will come back to the negotiatingtable with the palestinians on that. that is unconfirmed at this point. the israeli position has always been that they wouldn't negotiate whilst under rocket fire. technically if the palestinians, if hamas stopped firing into israel, technically, that does open the door for the israelis to come back and, of course, the egyptians will have been extremely busy over the day-to-day trying to really bring this about. it was an egyptian proposal in the first place, those who are brokering these talks to try to get the palestinians to stop rocket fire so that the israelis will get on board with in a ceasefire and come to the negotiating table aga

jane ferguson is live for us in jerusalem, jane are the sides any closer to what we've been calling this longer term arrangement? >> well, tony, some of the reports coming out in the israeli media who have been basically communicated to, those reports are essentially saying that we're seeing potentially a softening of the positions of both the palestinian and israeli sides. on the israeli side their initial demand that hamas must disarm for there to be a peace process or lasting peace it would appear that could be softening. on the other side, there is a sense that palestinians are softening their sense that the entire blockade of gaza in place since 2007 would have to be entirely lifted. this blockade severally limits the movement of people and goods by air, sea and land. what the palestinians had been previously seeking was an air and sea port. gaza used to be an historic port but that has not been the case for a long time now. however we are hearing reports that that could be softened. and instead of demanding the blockade be entirely lifted, that it be softened. if that is case, majo

let's join jane ferguson who is our correspondent for us in gaza. bring us up-to-date with what happened overnight and in to friday, certainly after the deaths of those three hamas military personnel. certainly it's very tense there. >> reporter: it was tense, of course, throughout thursday during the funerals of those three commanders. over the night, however, we have seen four palestinians killed in air strikes. so air strikes are continuing. but they are not at the same intensity that they have been before. what we are hearing is that a lot of these air strikes are hitting open land. agricultural land. you mentioned yourself some people had been killed on a farm there. we believe that they are striking the agricultural land most likely because they believe there could be tunnels there, the tunnels have been the biggest issue for the israelis in this war in terms of how taken by surprise they were by the intricate complex network of tunnels there were there. that's what they were focusing on overnight up until now with those air strikes. >> of cou

jane, you are about two hours away from the activity we have seen in zeina khodr's report. are you getting a sense of the kurdish region being at war effectively with the islamic state fighters? >> it absolutely is at war. the thing that we realised in the past couple of weeks is how quickly the front line can shift. the other thing is this is not a conventional army that the peshmerga, the kurdish forces or the u.s. are fighting. if you think back, this is now kurdish forces backed in the air primarily by the u.s., fighting a lethal and organised and better equipment enemy, the islamic state group. while they are trying to re take the gam and fighting for the town, it's been slow going. a lot have been laying land mines and improvised explosive devices. and the peshmerga reporting significant gains, several, at least three villages around the dam. they seem to be a long way from securing hold which, as we have heard is vital for power and water in northern iraq. it's not clear at this point how much of the huge dam facility is upped islamic state group control. they have m

jane ferguson is in jerusalem and jane, as you know, diplomats have been meeting in cairo today. what are you hearing about those talks? >> well, those talks are indirect talks, john, between all factions in gaza. the israelis and the egyptians. now, the talks have really just started and they will go on for several days. as you have said, if the ceasefire can be extended beyond its deadline of friday morning 8:00 a.m. local time the talks will likely continue. by now, both sides are putting forward their position. hamas has said they want the blookd to be blockade to be lifted. in and out of the gaza strip. the israelis say however they really want the disarmament of hamas to lay down their weapons and the kasam as they are known to be disarmed. both sides are extremely far apart in their position so far. basically we'll have to see if the egyptians who are brokering these talks can bring the two tides clossides close together e ceasefire which is fragile can be extended. >> jane can you talk about the israeli prime minister's defense of that military operation in gaza? >> it wa

jane, with the assumption and certainly analysis that perhaps as many as 200 u.s. special forces are on the ground and with u.s. aerial assaults, do you get a sense from politicians there, and everybody the public at large, that the involvement of the u.s. now is instrumental in to pushing back i.s. forces and that this will have an impact? >> reporter: absolutely. it still is a bit touch and go, but it's important to realize just how close those fighters were to the city. it seems extraordinary, this is a prosperous, well-developed city, lots of foreigners, lots of business going on, just fort kilometers from here the islamic state was approaching that's what really triggered the u.s. action. according to the u.s. official and kurdish officials now that the air strikes have begun they can take out the major position that his leave the iraqi forces, particularly the kurdish ones in a better position to react with the u.s. special forces who are here trying to go in and push them back further. after that reclaiming cities say much longer project and that one is goin

. >> jane ferguson is live in jerusalem. what are we hearing from the israelis, jane? >> reporter: well, the israelis are saying john that that rocket fire has continued out of gaza. since the ceasefire expired this morning at 8:00 a.m., local time, the israelis say that 61 missiles have been fired from gaza. they have responded, they say, with over 40 air missions. of course each mission can drop several bombs. those are air missions over the gaza strip. now as you've heard, my colleague andrew simmons report there, there was a child killed in one of those air strikes. 5 gazans and three israelis injured in air fire. there have been clashes after protests that followed friday prayer, one palestinian was killed. in jerusalem city however today was quite calm. often there are clashes on a friday after prayers there but today people were in quite a thoughtful mood. we spent some time with people in jerusalem to ask them how they were really taking in what had been going in in gaza. >> friday in the holy city of jerusalem and life here appears normal. muslims arrive on fo

we get more now from jane ferguson who is joining us from jerusalem. good to see you jane. what is expected to happen tomorrow? >> well, tomorrow thomas is really the crunch time for these negotiations. if the israelis don't come back, as you have said, the palestinians have said they will no longer wait for them and that these negotiations will essentially collapse. now the israelis stepped away from the negotiations on friday. that was friday morning at 8:00 a.m. local timing:00 that that 72-hour -- time that that 72 hour ceasefire expired and rockets were fired into israel. since then there have been israeli air strikes into gaza every day including dozens of rockets fired out of israel into gaza. shortly after that, we're likely to get some indication as to whether or not the israeli delegation will return to these negotiations. the palestinians have said not only must they return but they should return without any conditions so they should really return to the negotiations and discuss with the palestinians what they want which is an easing of blockade on gaza. it will

as jane was suggesting, the kurdish forces have managed to retake a series of towns around this moselrea, taking these towns from islamic state fighters over resent days and correspondent zana is on the front lines of this battle and she sent us this report from close to mosel. the kurdish are on the offensive. they are in battle with the islamic state group. but the kurdish forces are not fighting alone. the u.s. airforce is covering their advance from the skies. but the islamic state group is not making their task easy. we can see explosions from within the towns they control. they have also been leaving behind bombs on the side of the road as they retreat. one of the objectives of this military operation is to recapture the mosel dam, the largest in iraq from the islamic state group which controls one-third of the country. it's a strategic installation that provides water and electricity to surrounding areas. there are many front lines in this war. they advanced on more than one front. we are just 30 kilometers from the city center of mosel, the stronghold of the islamic state grou
