jane: i don't know. i think her signature was very different they and the writing in the letter. >> i think the signatures were her. the question of literacy is tricky. there is a question, can you read? my guess is maybe she could read at least a little. she is buried in a baptist cemetery, which suggests she was of a sort of protestantism. she would not have been a baptist early in her life because there were not baptist there early in her life. but she was sort of protestant, her reading scriptures would be important. she can write her signature, but can she write other stuff? i do not know the answer. one of the reasons it is petitions were generally written by scribes. even if you could write, people rarely wrote their own petitions because there was a form and other things. i do not know. the odds are good she was not super literate just because even white women in the southern colonies tended not to be super literate. i think there is a spectrum. i would maybe put her in the middle of the spectrum

first of all jane welcome i think many of you know jane mayer that she cowrote the clarence thomas case. and she is two recent books that both had the word dark in them. the dark side in dark money. and she's been a reporter for the wall street journal in the new yorker for some time i think we first met in 1984 and most recently as i think all of you know she deserves congratulations for two very impactful stories in the new yorker. the first and was on the so-called dossier and christopher steele and who he is and what we should think about him the most recent one this week we were just talking about our now former attorney general eric schneiderman. the first question i ask come from and who is john galt. who is eric schneiderman. we don't really answer that question at all because were only writing about this particular aspect of him. it was ashamed. i think is a very complex character. it would've been more about why some insight into why did he behave in this way. why was someone who sponsored the legislation in the new york assembly making strangulation a crime who is he, i think

and joining us now here is jane kim. inform we are going to pretty much ask you the same questions that we have asked all the other candidates. i grew up in the bay area. there are homes encampments everywhere including throughout the city. mayor mark farrell has said enough is enough and is trying to clear them out. do you support that? if not what would you do differently to deal with the homeless problem? >> i support getting people off the streets. i think the big question is as you where are they going? so if we're sweeping them from one corner to another corner, one neighborhood to another neighborhood, we are not actually solving the problem. what i have often seen with sweeps in the district that i represent is that one set of constituents will call and complain one day, and the next day a different set of neighbors will call and complain about the same encampment the next day. we simply have to build more shelter beds. but i have to say, this is a statewide crisis. california has 20% of the nation's homeless. we

a lot of tear gas jane in the last two hours or so the crowds aren't as big as we've seen in the last couple of fridays and that's because many people would tell you that they're preparing for the bigger protest so not so what they call the catastrophe seventieth anniversary of the start as operation of the state of israel that will be on monday but certainly you've been seeing a lot of tear gas being thrown not just to that crowd as opposed to the fence but also to the positions where we are there is a sort of protest tent area set up from behind we are they've been throwing it over our heads and around this area but no one is deterred you'll see people run back from the tear gas and then they'll run back towards the fence we've also counted probably at least ten a gunshot wound sniper fire. on mostly young men who are close to the fence but again that doesn't deter them jane you've seen people come here that were shot before and that will come back again and go right up to the fence and that's because they will tell you that they really have nothing less left to lose situation here
