supervisor jane kim is also here. they are both here because i know both have a strong commitment to our youth in san francisco. i want to welcome all of you here tonight for two reasons. one, i know we are going to give some awards out for our youth leaders, but the other reason i wanted to make sure you had a good invitation to come to city hall tonight was because we have been waiting for one of you to register, wondering if you are going to run for mayor or not. there is a vacant seat for youth to lead the city. i think you can take this job and run with it. this city needs to be more kid- friendly, more youth-oriented. i think you could have a big input to make sure that what we are doing will be there for you to raise families as well. i want to congratulate all the nominees tonight. all of you who have been participating in this competition for the fellowship have been doing great work. i have been reading through some of the accomplishments that you are a part of. i got to meet some of you, luckily, last month

we have jane kim, carmen chu is here, scott wiener, mark farrell. they are here as well. there may be more coming. i want to give a special thanks. i know not only gain, but her staff, has worked hard to spend the time necessary to explain to everybody but this is all about, and to also make sure the commitments that were made by the city family are actually carried out. whether they are affordable housing or transportation, or open space, parking challenges that we will face, or whether they are simple communications of what this is all about, i want to invite supervisor jane kim appeared to speak. -- up here to speak. >> thank you, mayor lee. i got to come to the end of a really long process, close to 14 years, of the development project, the last six months, and it is amazing how much can happen. so many people were involved in the process for many years. mayor li the enologist many of them. -- lee acknowledged many of them. tida, the citizen advisory committee. i look at developments with a careful lens because they have a huge impact on the city of san francisco and

as you know, is supervisor jane kim out there? jane, come up. i will always thank the board of supervisors because i wouldn't be standing here without that kind of support from the board who made the historic vote to vote in the first chinese american mayor in the history of this city. i recognize that as part of this tradition. so i want to read a couple of things out to you here. it's worth reading. whereas 33 years ago a group of local musicians, artists and residents eager to bring the spirit of latin america and caribbean culture to san francisco, created carnaval. and ever since this celebration has been one of our city's most spectacular traditions. and whereas the san francisco carnaval is produced by the san francisco cultural arts tradition, a nonprofit that strives to make multiculturalism a -- tangible reality by uniting people in celebration with music, dance, artistry and food and these endeavors continue to be a significant contribution to the vitality of our communities. whereas the theme of this year's san francisco carnaval, li

i am proud to be here as part of this announcement, and i am here on behalf of my colleague jane kim, who is stuck in city hall. the two of us have the honor of representing the number one place in san francisco where people come to shop, and hello to everyone on the cable cars, spend time in our incredible city. this is an announcement of how we build 21st century city -- cities, how we can create communities on very busy dance streets. we know it takes a village to create a parklet. i want to thank the city department for being our partners. dpw, oewd, mta -- these acronyms refer to organizations and thousands of hours done to come up with this. three years ago, when i first came into office, a number of merchants from union square came to me and said, david, we would like to tax ourselves more. we would like to triple the size of the business improvement district. today's announcement is part of that portion of that amazing vision. i want to thank the in square business improvement district for everything you are doing to make union square one of the best attractions that san franc

[applause] >> good morning. it is really an honor to serve as a district supervisor for the tenderloin neighborhood. one of the things that is the greatest honor is being able to post some of the best non-profit service providers and affordable housing agencies in the city. it is something that i am proud of. the mayor's office, board of supervisors, works hard to squeeze everything out of every dollar we can, to make sure that organizations like tndc can do everything they can to create more opportunity for the residents of san francisco. it is really the work of these organizations that make a real difference for the people of san francisco. really excited about the rehab work that is happening here. the answer is not just housing that people can afford, but quality housing that people can afford. the tenderloin has long been a haven for our most low-income and poorest residents. something that we have seen in the recent census data is that the tenderloin continues to grow in population, density, and is one of
