supervisor jane kim is also here. they are both here because i know both have a strong commitment to our youth in san francisco. i want to welcome all of you here tonight for two reasons. one, i know we are going to give some awards out for our youth leaders, but the other reason i wanted to make sure you had a good invitation to come to city hall tonight was because we have been waiting for one of you to register, wondering if you are going to run for mayor or not. there is a vacant seat for youth to lead the city. i think you can take this job and run with it. this city needs to be more kid- friendly, more youth-oriented. i think you could have a big input to make sure that what we are doing will be there for you to raise families as well. i want to congratulate all the nominees tonight. all of you who have been participating in this competition for the fellowship have been doing great work. i have been reading through some of the accomplishments that you are a part of. i got to meet some of you, luckily, last month

jane kim is here today. you will be hearing from her. i do not know if mayer brown is here, but it is important to it knowledge him. after all, he started the project many years ago. you will be hearing more about that in a moment. it will include thousands of new residential units, parks, open space, shops, retail, restaurant, and so forth. you will be hearing a lot about that from the mayor and jane. in addition, the men and women working on our construction site. you can see some of them here today. they are very dedicated and have been working hard on the project. i want to thank them for their hard work today. i am thrilled to report the project is on budget and on schedule. with respect to the demolition, over 55,000 hours of work completed without any accident or injury. so thank you for such a great job. in addition, we recycled over 92,000 cubic yards of concrete. that is enough to fill 28 olympic-sized swimming pools. in addition to that, we recycled 200,000 tons of steel. so we are really doing our job. when we reopening, we w

as you know, is supervisor jane kim out there? jane, come up.hank the board of supervisors because i wouldn't be standing here without that kind of support from the board who made the historic vote to vote in the first chinese american mayor in the history of this city. i recognize that as part of this tradition. so i want to read a couple of things out to you here. it's worth reading. whereas 33 years ago a group of local musicians, artists and residents eager to bring the spirit of latin america and caribbean culture to san francisco, created carnaval. and ever since this celebration has been one of our city's most spectacular traditions. and whereas the san francisco carnaval is produced by the san francisco cultural arts tradition, a nonprofit that strives to make multiculturalism a -- tangible reality by uniting people in celebration with music, dance, artistry and food and these endeavors continue to be a significant contribution to the vitality of our communities. whereas the theme of this year's san francisco carnaval, live your fantasy,

[inaudible] >> about three months ago, i walked through the mission district with jane kim and david campos. this was after that shooting in the mission. we were walking along with officers in the district, just watching the streets, -- walking the streets, talking to merchants. we got an eyeful and an earful of these kids hanging out on the corners with nothing to do. people said the city has come out to come up with better programs to track these youth. they are listening to the people on the streets trying to recruit them. we know that they are interested player from getting in ties into these gangs. we particularly listened to the community response network, the people that are in touch with these gangs. we have a program where they are helping police officers get information on what is going on. they recommended that we create an annual camp, where for free, about 50 kids -- and we may increase down the road -- will get a full camp experience. kids across whole arena of san francisco get these weeks where they go to camp and have a wonderful time. some kids do not get a chance b
