i'd like to take this opportunity to introduce you to the supervisor for this district, supervisor jane kim. [applause] >> supervisor kim: thank you, mayor breed for joining us in the tenderloin neighborhood. i always like to call this your second district. it is so great to be here today. 101 hyde has always been a special place for our residents because so many residents live in single room occupancy hotels where they don't have access to mail. this was the space where people could get their checks, be connected to the world, and when the post office shut this site down with federal budget cuts, it was a huge loss for our community. and when we learned that it was sold to built market race housing, i think that was one of the more depressing news and updates in this neighborhood. but for whatever reason when the owner wasn't able to build, and we were negotiating, market street for the masses, they said you know what? we really need affordable housing that our residents can afford, and they often can't afford the inclusionary housing in the market rate buildings. through that negotiation

so last fall, erica and i had the pleasure of meeting with supervisor jane kim, and we presented our plan and our vision. i'm delighted to welcome back her -- or welcome here to see firsthand what we've done, and we'd love to hear your thoughts. and thank supervisors jane kim and norman yee for their steadfast support of this legislation and early recognition of the atenable situation of the low wage workers. our agreement on the proposed amendments to the minimum compensation ordinance is a collective recognition of the critical situation these workers face. working for $15 an hour, they are on the edge of homelessness themselves while they care for our seniors, homeless youth and families in the community. in addition, nonprofits are having a very difficult time attracting and retaining people to these jobs. seeing large fast turnovers as well as vacancies. come probl our amendments, raise wages of ihss workers $3.75 an hour over four years, and non-profit $1.15 an hour will by no means give them a livable wage. even at 18.75 an hour, only making $39,000 annually. about but i am humbled and grateful to offer some relief to the workers. thank the labor council for being champions and holding the elected officials accountable. many thanks to mayor breed and her team for working diligently and closely with supervisor ronen and m

i worked at the school district for 12 and a half years and i remember you, too, jane kim. so, 12 1/2 years with the school district, i left there because of all the hell i went through. i pray to god, and i made a decision to leave. [voice breaking] like the other woman said, one medication to almost five. and that's when i finally said enough is enough. i worked in my department for almost three years with no supervisor. i ran that department. worked overtime without getting any pay and was the best person in that department for them to hire someone 20 years younger than me, asian, who had never worked in city and county and who had never worked in a print processing department and mail services like i did. i left and went to laguna honda. i said i would never let anyone do to me that happened at the school district. i get there, two supervisors try -- they went to h.r. over the executive director who was black and over the operations manager who was black to try to get me fired. i said the first job i could get to get me out of lou -- laguna honda, i would leave and i di
