joining me to talk about it, jane velez-mitchell, host of "issues" with jane velez-mitchell, coming up at the top of the hour. jane, we're just getting little drips and drabs of information. the two new details of possibly leaving with two or three guys, possibly hitchhiking. do you think we're any closer? do you think we have anything here? >> i think it's all good news in the sense that this is a completely perplexing mystery and we have absolutely no idea what happened. and this is the first time we've gotten any kind of hard information about something that police can follow as a viable lead. and so if she was hitchhiking and she got into a vehicle, the key would be finding out what vehicle did she get into, and then law enforcement has a variety of techniques they can use to try to narrow down how many of those vehicles exist in the state and how many are registered in that part of the state and they can narrow down the possibilities. but this is a break-through in this case, make in moistake, there was absolutely nothing to go on except her purse, the cell phone with the battery

i'm jane velez-mitchell. that's my issue. >> find out what else jane has on her mind. tch "issues with jane velez-mitchell" every night at 7:00 eastern here on hln. >>> a convicted pedophile has been sentenced to nearly 20 years in prison. you may remember the international manhunt. he was convicted for having sex with boys as young as 6 years old during trips to thailand. yesterday a federal judge told him he acted beyond the bounds of human decency. he was part of a sex tourism ring that preyed on young children. >>> a georgia teacher under arrest of suspicion of putting a hit out on a student. a tenth grade teacher is accused of trying to persuade another student to kill a 16-year-old boy. it took when the boy was taken aside and asked if he was gay. that led to a back and forth verbal exchange. the dispute took a dark turn. the 16-year-old owes moth's mot outraged and terrified when she found out. >> the teacher held up a piece of paper with the victim's name on it. >> people say they do something in this day and time. they just might do it. we're pretty scared. >>

i want to bring in my friend and colleague jane velez-mitchell, host of "issues with jane velez-mitchell" coming up at the top of the hour. we can't prove it. in the footage her taking drugs. >> listen, if she was acting she was robbed because she deserved an academy award from that. the judge said i can't tell whether she is stoend or acting because it is videotape. the judge can't make that leap but the public can certainly draw its own conclusions. and one of the reasons why people wear sun glasses when they are doing drugs is to hide their eyes because the eyes give it away. when you see her eyes in this video she is so unfocused, also what gives it away, the voice. she is slurring her words and her whole body language is loosy goosy to a point where the combined behavior points very clearly to her being stoned on something. now, that's my personal opinion. i have no proof of it. but let's face it. we're all living in this world and we can look at that video and jump to our own conclusions. >> let's watch some of the newer stuff this is a portion where anna nicole smith is going back

in a statement he said -- >>> jane velez-mitchell has been watching the shooting. the shooting today, the shooting at ft. hood. she's beyond shocked. jane, what's your take on this? >> well, i think the time has come to say that we are crossed a line, chuck. because i think i had the reaction that everybody across the country did. we all looked up at our tvs and said, whoa, it's happened again for the second day in a row. what the bleep is going on in our country? with these masked shootings and all this violence in general. i really feel that it is time now to take a deep breath and say, yes, we want to know the who, what, when, why, how of this particular incident and the particular incident that occurred yesterday. but we also need to find the deeper why. of why this is the solution that is being selected by people with a whole variety of problem. i'm asking the question tonight, is america addicted to violence? and if so, which i do believe we are addicted to violence, we have a real problem on our hands. one thing i do know about addiction is it progresses. it

this is one of the issues jane velez-mitchell is going to tackle. what disturbs you most about the case? the fact that this guy was at large at all? >> yes, chuck. you're right on the money. this guy should not have been roaming the streets at all. back in 1989 he raped a woman. he was convicted. he served 15 years. then out on the street in 2005. now women are coming forward saying, hey, he attacked me. i'm just happy to be alive to tell you about it. apparently one woman he offered her a beer. she said no. he punched her in the face, dragged her into the house. he was arrested for rape, kidnapping, et cetera. the case never went to court. why not? that is what we're going to be examining tonighting on "issues" beginning at 7:00 eastern. obviously being a convicted rapist he was a registered sex offender. the cops did visit him regularly. how comb they didn't notice the stench? they visited, sheriff deputies on september 22nd according to published reports. the neighbors were saying the stench was going on for months. even though they weren't allow

with jane velez-mitchell joaden sweeten called it a vicious cycle. addicts get high to stop feeling, feel bad about getting high and keept using. danny bonaduce also on the show says he's come to terms in his addiction in his own way by falling off the wagon. >> what happens is this vicious sishgal goes on and on and people and they completely do things that lower their self-esteem. i got tired of doing things that lowered my steph esteem. i figured my place in life and stayed there and am quite comfortable. >> do you get drunk? >> yes. >> okay. but isn't that a problem? i mean, because with addicts we can't just have a couple of drinks. listen, if i could have a couple of drinks i would have a couple of drinks. what happened with me is that when i had the first drink i would develop a craving that completely overwhelmed my mind and my mind would align with my addiction and justify any behave ter took to get that alcohol. so i was not in control. i was a zombie and couldn't stop. then i'd have six drinks and could potentially knock on wood, thank god

joining me now, my friend and colleague, jane velez-mitchell. jane, i know we -- we got the bad news during your show. we have covered these. i know, your heart was breaking right there on the air as you heard this. >> it is the saddest thing. there is a shock of just being told in your ear while you are covering the story and you are looking at these girls' photos and hoping against hope that there was a sighting of them and in a town 40 miles away. and what i heard the public information officer say he couldn't do the interview with us. he had to go right away. at the top of the show, my gosh, there's obviously some kind of development. in the back of mind i was hoping for the best. i was hoping they were going to say they were found in that town. when they just came back in my ear and said all three girls are dead and just pulled them out of the pond in their vehicle. it is just so crushing because we cover so much sadness and so much violence and so much tragedy. and it is just -- one more and it does, i'm sure, gets to you, too. can you imag

i want to bring in jane velez-mitchell host of "issues" at the top of the hour. also joining us, kim serafin. jane, do you think he's in a good place and on the right track to get his life in order? >> well, yes and no. the i heard some encouraging things. i heard some discouraging things. i was very encouraged him to say just now that he's in the process of making amends, cleaning up the mess he's made. trying to focus on being of service. he is doing community service and getting therapy. that's all good. but i'm concerned that he's still very, very focused on how the public perceives him. and is really very interested in the fact that, oh, the public's divided 50/50 about me, some thing i'm fantastic, others want to see me in jail. he shouldn't be worried about that. really, it's not about appearances. you can save your face and save your behind. he's got to save his behind. >> i agree with you. i thought it was poor timing on his part. and i don't know if it was his call or if it was mtv's call to have his interview before rihanna's. i thought sheer decency, y

i'm jane velez-mitchell and that's my issue. . >> and tonight on issues, celebrity addiction scandals of the most notorious cases of stars with addiction. that's tonight at 7:00 p.m. eastern right here on hln. >>> the man accused of kidnapping an 11-year-old girl and holding her captive for 18 years has apologized from his jailhouse cell. philip garrido wrote to a california tv station saying he wanted to apologize to, quote, every human being for what's taken place, unquote. garrido and his wife are accused of holding jaycee dugard in a compound behind their california home. they have pleaded not guilty. police also say garrido fathered dugard's two daughters. >>> an ohio mom is accused of taking her kids shoplifting. police say surveillance tape shows the woman and her two children stealing clothes. take a look yourself here. when a security guard confronts them, though, a fight breaks out. police say two more adults got out of the getaway vehicle to join the melee. the adults were arrested. the 8-year-old boy and 10-year-old girl are now in protective custody. >>> a student's hair

joining me to talk about this, jane velez-mitchell, host of "issues" coming up at the top of the hour. jane, this one just shocked us. it was hard to come to grips with this one. and this really kicked off your war on women, didn't it? >> it did. >> as we wrestled with this story. tell me your feelings now as we have justice for anne pressly. >> well, this was the first case, mike, where we really announced on "issues" a war on women. because in so many cases, people would say, well, if if she hadn out drinking or well, if she hasn't been out hiking by herself. this was a young woman at home by herself in her home not doing anything. so it just disproves this whole theory that women have to watch themselves, that why should women modify their behavior? why don't we modify the behavior of violent criminals? and so, this is the ultimate example of what i call the psychological burqa that all women in america have to wear. we point our noses down at other cultures where women have to wear burqas and certainly i think that's hideous and awful but what about wearing a psychological burqa w

>> jane velez-mitchell, no doubt about that. can you imagine for all these months, all these years, the smell, people walking around like this, nobody coming around. nobody investigating. nobody saying hey, this is a registered sex offender, this guy's done major time, why don't we just go inside and look around. particularly since he is the responsibility of the sheriff's department of kuyahoga county. my god, again, law enforcement a dollar short and a day late. we've seen this before. >> i got to wonder, judy koriansky, clinical psychiatrist, okay, the mayor of cleveland has a niece. the niece admits she dated this guy for a couple of years and they did drugs together. where was the mayor of cleveland? if i have a niece that's doing drugs, which i don't, thank god, but if i did, i would notice it. if it was happening over a period of time and i'd say who are you doing drugs with, i want to go see where you're living. >> well, what happens in these cases, and we've seen it over and over again, is that a lot of these horrific,

jane velez-mitchell.y >>> we're learning that tropical storm ida could make landfall as early as tonight. it was a hurricane. it has been downgraded. its top winds are now about 70 miles per hour. still forecasters say it could dump up to eight inches of rain when it makes landfall. so this is still a really serious situation. landfall could be around the mobile, alabama, area. at last report, ida was 165 miles south-southwest of pensacola, florida. tropical storm warnings are in effect along a 200 mile stretch from louisiana to florida. the governors of louisiana, mississippi and alabama and florida have declared states of emergency and flood-weary georgia is getting ready to get soaked again. so far, no mandatory evacuations have been ordered, but authorities in some coastal areas are encouraging people near the water or in mobile homes to leave. encouraging, nudge, nudge. they want you to be on top of things, all right? >>> the suspect in the ft. hood shootings, major nidal hasan, is now conscious and
