jane velez-mitchell joins me now from los angeles. e velez-mitchell" program. you were there this weekend through all of the crying and all of the tributes that we witnessed from afar. what really struck you it the reaction from celebrities and from whitney houston's fans? >> reporter: well, it was amazing to see the fans converge at the beverly hilton while whitney houston's body was still inside. and they really formed a spontaneous chorus almost of crying, and they had candles. they were singing whitney houston songs. i thought it was extraordinaire that the whitney houston fans knew all about whitney's demons. they had all the facts, almost like a reporter would. they could separate that from her talent. and they wanted to focus that night on her genius as a singer. and just the love, the people crying, people talking about their experiences. how she was as it's a cliche, but they had said the soundtrack of their lives, and it's true. for so many of those folks. i was there as they were think issing. that was so touching that they

i want to bring in hln's james veldevelo -- jane velez mitchell. you and i talk all the time. we are very open and honest with each other. you heard the lieutenant there. but, jane, you are a recovering addict. you know the issues that whitney houston had. talk to us. >> well, i think we have to be very careful because the first rule of journalism is to never assume of course. but the fact that she's in a hotel and that she has this history of drug abuse is certainly something that is going to immediately come to people's mind as a possibility. alcohol and drugs are cunning, baffling and powerful and they will wait and do pushups, your disease is doing pushups. she had said to oprah in 2010, i believe that, she had conquered her demons but you never conquer them. you are never cured of a drug addiction or alcoholism. all you have is one day. you have a daily reprieve and you have to work a program very, very hard, especially if you have the kind of drug abuse history that whitney houston has. she's confessed to abusing cocaine, marijuana, pills. it's sad to say but her most inf

i talked to jane velez-mitchell yesterday and she would agree with you, the enablers, the circle around a huge hotel. cameras are pretty much everywhere. i imagine investigators are combing through every piece of surveillance video they can get their hands on. >> right you are. not just surveillance video but from television interviews. there's an interview, there's a piece of video from clive davis where he's doing an interview and whitney houston comes in and her clothes are completely dry. her hair is wet. they're looking at that. investigators do say that they have asked for pa surveillance video. they're not saying that the surveillance video exists, but they say it will be part of the investigation if they have recovered it. some parts they have to keep private and won't share, brooke. >> what about the room itself, don in this room in the beverly hills hilton? you have some news as far as when officials actually entered the room and where they found her. >> according to the sources very close to the death investigation says at no point does the source believe that whitney houston

joining us is jane velez-mitchell. it's one of those stories that reminds you of michael can jackson, anna nicole smith. they all have a thread, drug abuse. i know that's difficult for the family as they go into the funeral. >> they are very concerned about the tone and that's why i think they don't want this big motorcade from the funeral home to the church. there's going to be this private viewing today at the funeral home and then at some point, we don't know when, the body will be quietly moved to the church so there isn't a parade atmosphere. they want everything respectful. now, once the funeral service begins with all of the big names, that is going to be a celebration of her life. that is going to be a joyful ceremony. but the family is very concerned that the controversy for tomorrow be put aside and this is a celebration of her achievements and of whitney's place in history. >> they had to put this thing together so incredibly quickly. this is a grand scale event that would take years to plan and i was lookin

." >> jane velez-mitchell joins us now to discuss this an author and tv host. good morning. great to see up. >> great to see you. >> you have relapsed itself, written books about it. what did you think when you heard about this? >> knock on wood, i'll be 17 years sober in april, and i have tremendous compassion for him. we have to give him credit for immediately acknowledging that he had a relapse. some people go out and binge and stay out for years, so that we have to give him credit for and have compassion for him. but he is a chronic relapser. he has relapsed several times and we have to realize that alcohol is cunning, baffling and powerful, and it is doing pushups the entire time that you are sober, waiting for a moment of weakness. now, what we talk about in 12 step is people, places, and things. avoid the people, places, and things you associate with drinking. number one, bar. both relapses occurred when he was in a bar. right there, do not go into a bar, all right? that's the main thing. >> does he need someone with him at all times? >> i think it was a huge mistake
