jane watrel joins us with more. >> reporter: the hijacking episode did end quickly, without police firing a single shot. u.s., french and mexican citizens were among the 112 passengers caught up in the idea. aeromexico flight 576 left cancun this afternoon and was briefly hijacked and landed in mexico city. the hijackers released all the passengers. the crew was released unharmed moments later. as many as eight handcuffed men were led away from the plane which was isolated at the end of a runway. mexican authorities say the motives were unclear. while there was no bomb on the plane, some passenger said one of the hijackers held up a package that looked like an explosive device. apparently they never communitied with the passengers directly. it wasn't until the plane landed in mexico city that there was an announcement made that the plane had been hijacked. mexico's attorney general said it is opening an investigation into terrorism and kidnapping, but didn't specify how many people were going to be charged. the incident comes two days before the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks here in the

jane watrel is live at police headquarters with more. >> reporter: jim, the grizzly discovery of rosa vasquez means her body was literally a few feet away from the family's back door. we have live pictures of the neighborhood where her body was discovered in that plastic storage container. rosa vasquez, a silver spring woman, was last seen leesk for work august 31st around 7:00 in the morning. she lived in the 3600 block of castle terrace. her ex-husband the next day reported her missing when she didn't show up for work. her employer told blis miss vasquez was extremely reliable and it was highly unlikely she would not show up for work without calling in first. for two weeks police worked this case. early this morning they decided to go back to the house and retrace some steps. >> she was reported missing september 1st. last night detectives got together, started conferencing and sharing information and decided to review steps that had been taken. they met at her house and started going over everything in the house. ultimately found her body in a plastic storage container in the corne

jane watrel has the story. >> reporter: when rosa vazquez varned worried neighbors circulated flyers. police found her body hidden in a backyard plastic storage container. >> it is sad to hear this news. last time i saw her was the day before she disappeared. then all of a sudden they said she disappeared. it was shocking. >> more shocking was the arrest of 17-year-old priamo portillo-guevera. according to the charge documents, he was dating the victim's daughter. the victim's daughter let priamo portillo-guevera into the family's home the night of august 30th and kept him hidden in the base many. after the daughter left for school, the spect texted the daughter her mother found him there. an argument ensued. police believe the suspect killed the victim in her home and hid her body in the backyard container. >> her family is in shock. and we want to be sensitive to them before we start asking them more questions about the details that led up to this. the main thing is that we believe that we have her assailant in custody. >> reporter: rosa was hard working and happy. they are unnerved

we'll go through them, see what they are and report back to you in about an hour. >> jane watrel, thankou. >>> one of our top stories today was a terror alert. here is a recap. police are urging the public to be on guard against possible terrorist attacks in places where there are large crowds, sports stadiums, entertainment complexes and hotels. all of this comes on the heal of a major terror arrest that occurred earlier this week. pete williams is here to tell us more about that. is this related to the arrest of those three men in denver and new york? >> yes, it is. i think wt it really tells you is they don't know what the target was. if you look at the list of possible venues there, it's half the yellow pages. it clearly tells you the authorities don't know what it was. they don't feel they have all the people involved rounded up. they think they are still out there and still might have the capacity to carry out an attack. why not urge the people in charge of security at those places to keep an extra eye out? that's the audience, not the public. it's the people in charge of security

jane watrel is here with more on the story. >> doreen, about 90 members of the hawaii national guard plus a navy friget are heading to the recovery and rescue effort. the quake hit about 2:00 yesterday afternoon, with the tsunami following almost instantly. the capital city of samoa in shambles, following tuesday morning's deadly tsunami powered by an 8.3 earthquake. this capitol hill worker was in america samoa over the weekend, na roly missing the disaster. >> the phone lines have been down, power has been down. parts of the roads, you know, are damaged to the point you cannot cross. >> reporter: nearly 2,700 miles from australia, the epicenter of this earthquake was just off the coast of america samoa. and the effects could be felt for miles. because america samoa is a u.s. territory with a representative in congress, all u.s. disaster relief services are at its disposal. red cross workers are going around the clock to help get aid to those who need it the most. >> we do have volunteers on the ground already, which is great. and they're already distributing supplies, flashlights,

jane watrel is here now. we were all listening to that debate last week. there was confusion there. >> reporter: and creigh deeds took a lot of heat. he didn't make clear where he stood. today he said he would support a tax hike to fund his transportation plan, if necessary. the jammed roadways of northern virginia are fuelling the governor's race. in a debate before the fairfax county chamber of commerce last week, bob mcdonnell said he would not raise taxes to pay for his transportation plan. creigh deeds offered a confusing response, only compounded when confronted by reporters after the debate. the mcdonnell campaign pounced on deeds' remarks and posted them on youtube. deeds is making his stand on gridlock perfectly clear. in a "the washington post" op-ed piece, deeds now says he will raise taxes, if necessary. to fix the state's transportation woes. political observers say it was a move the democrats had to make. >> he had to put something out that clarifies and makes absolutely direct his position on the issue of taxes. previously, he just looked li

jane watrel has our report. >> reporter: it's a small town of roughly 720 homes. anyone familiar with connecticut avenue knows chevy chase's main throw fair has big city problems. >> i have personally seen dozens of almost accidents, not even counting the ones i've never seen. >> reporter: despite installing radar cameras to catch speeders, up to 1/3 of drivers have gotten off scot free because of the dense traffic until now. starting friday, these laser speed cameras will come online designed to catch anybody speeding in any lane. the chief insists the new cameras are needed. >> your standard lane is 12 1/2 feet wide. we get a lot of traffic, approximately 30,000 cars a day in a 24-hour period. we get trucks and buses. the lane just -- the road can't handle the volume. >> not everyone is excited. many people believe motorists only drive the speed limit near the cameras, then hit the gas once they pass by. you say they slow down temporarily. >> just like when they come down to chevy chase village. they slow down at the country club and speed up after. >> reporter:

jane watrel reports. >> reporter: the disappearance of 35-year-old rosa vasquez was solved last night by montgomery county detectives, just a few feet away from the back door of the family's home. there, detectives discovered the woman's body stuffed in a plastic storage container. the silver spring woman that had initially been reported missing by her ex-husband, last seen leaving for work august 31st at 7:00 in the morning. she lived in the 3600 block of castle terrace. her employer, her husband and everyone who knew rosa vasquez told police she was highly reliable and this was not the case of a missing woman. police worked the case for a couple of weeks and last night decided to go back to the family home and retrace their steps. they found h body. now they are trying to come up with a motive. >> as you might guess, this is still very fresh. we started very early this morning in discovering her body and detectives have worked all night and day on this. we are still waitings for information from the medical examiner's office, as well. her family is in shock. we want to be sensitive
