i'm jessica aguirre, and i'm janelle wang. it's all hands on deck. as firefighters in southern california braced for another round of those strong santa ana winds. here we go again a nonstop week for emergency crews in los angeles county. firefighters battling massive, deadly fires, the biggest by far, continues to be the palisades fire in pacific palisades, which is between malibu and santa monica. that started exactly a week ago, and it's grown to over 23,000 acres, 17% containment at this point. the burn threatening the encino and brentwood neighborhoods. now the eaton fire, a little smaller at 14,000 acres, tearing through altadena. that's north of pasadena. firefighters were able to gain some ground over the weekend and contained about 35% of it. but weather analysts predicted the santa ana winds would pick up today and fuel the flames. they did strengthen, but luckily the winds have not been as devastating as experts initially predicted. still, gusts are expected to pick up later this afternoon and into the night. meanwhile, investigators are w

this is nbc bay area news tonight i'm janelle wang. we're going to start with new fallout and fear tied to the white house crackdown on undocumented immigrants, both here in the bay area and nationwide. nbc news has learned that immigration and customs enforcement, or ice, made nearly 1200 arrests in one day. that was yesterday when ice agents fanned out across the country. take a look at some of this video. this is from an operation in chicago. nbc news found that just under half of the people were detained because they lacked legal authorization to be in the u.s. president trump's border czar says that while ice is targeting people with criminal records, there could be some collateral arrests of other people during these raids. and tonight, we also are learning of new ice activity in the bay area. the rapid response network, that's a team of volunteers focused on outreach and aid for the immigrant community, says it confirmed ice agents showed up at least in two locations in east san jose today. that' after confirmed sightings and at

janelle. since exposing public safety concerns with next generation 911 last november, we filed more records requests. newly released police documents now show major 911 problems keep coming up some just a couple of months ago. nextgen 911 is our statewide upgrade, bringing our landline based 911 system into the internet age. these new records here are from wasco police department near bakersfield. it's one of the latest agencies to go live with the state's new network. last november, wasco's i.t. manager wrote in an email, 911 calls were not coming through the system, and callers were receiving busy signals. gia is one of the companies the state contracted with to create this new network. according to that it manager's email, the problems happened more than once, and then a few months before that, the department's records administrator wrote their entire call handling system went down in a six hour 911 outage. fortunately, we haven't had any major tragedies as a result of the system coming on
