janelle. this is a west little vargas creek, and when we get these heavy downpours, it tends to get a bit swollen and rise up and well, tends to flood the street across where we're standing right here and the streets around it. that's exactly what we saw this morning. we saw watsonville road at monterey closed off. we saw several other streets, like lamar in this area that had also received a lot of water. the city crews were out monitoring the area. and they say that, yes, these are some of the hot spots of morgan hill, but they try and close them off, do the best they can. now the street that we're right near is across the street from tim gall's home. and he says that, yeah, this is something that happens from time to time. i've been here 27 years and it floods almost every single year, not to this extent, but almost every year. there's every time we get a heavy rain in january, a lot of times the water comes up like this, a lot of water and no power. i hear there was some power outages too

the question is, though, as you said, janelle, where do they go?ple in rvs tell me there isn't really a good answer yet. we found a handful on a street a couple miles away, and ultimately many are waiting on a safe rv parking site slated to open near the flea market. it's expected to host 85 vehicles, and we're told that it's supposed to open sometime this month. but the city admits it's no magic bullet and certainly won't meet the overall demand. homeless advocate gail osmer says the project that was first announced a year and a half ago is taking too long to open. it should have been open a year ago. that's that's the truth. let's get these open. let's get them going. let's get people into it. so this is a pilot rv program. you said they hit chenoweth. how many sites have city crews gone to besides that one? so they're on their fourth site out of 30 right now. and the mayor even admits, you know, the pilot program establishing these so-called towaway zones is not a perfect solution, but says it's better than nothing and the current situation isn'

janelle. thanks, vianey. as the rain moves across the bay area, our free nbc bay area app is a great resource to have. you can type in your zip code to get a customized forecast for your neighborhood. a health advisory still in effect today in contra costa county after a fire sparked at the martinez refinery over the weekend. it happened on saturday afternoon. the refinery says workers were about to do a maintenance check when they noticed hydrocarbon material was leaking. they evacuated the area and then the material caught on fire. the fire was mostly extinguished yesterday. now contra costa health is investigating the burn and must complete a report by tomorrow afternoon. people who live nearby are upset as this is not the first problem with the refinery in the past few years. in 2022, the martinez refining company accidentally released 20 tons of spent catalyst. that was just the smoke. i mean, last a few years, back when they had that explosion. where about they layered that ash all over the place where

janelle. okay. sergio quintana, there are going to be some huge downpours in the next couple of hours, so stay safe out there. thank you so much. well, downed trees, street closures, power outages. pg&e is expecting some of its biggest storm impacts to be focused in san mateo county and the santa cruz mountains. we've already seen some localized flooding and street lights out. the utility is stationing crews across the bay area to help repair outages. as the storm continues into this evening. we do have a storm outage prediction model, which is a fairly sophisticated tool that uses ai and machine learning. that gives us a really good prediction of how many outages will we'll be seeing, where they'll be located and what what the staffing levels are required to respond to those outages. so we are prepared and staffed to those levels. and we just got an update. nearly 22,000 customers are without power right now across the bay area. more than 9000 on the peninsula alone. pg&e is also reminding people t

our janelle wang spoke with the 49ers president and the ceo of the bay area host committee. both are at super bowl 59 right now in new orleans, hopefully having a great time. but let's talk about super bowl 61 year from now at levi's stadium. i want to start with you. what is cooking behind the scenes? yeah, it's such an exciting week for us. like reality right? as we kick off one year out to super bowl 60, we have a great week planned with the nfl and the new orleans host committee. they're taking us through a basically a crash course or, you know, training session over the thursday and friday, a lot of meetings with them. and then on monday, we have the official handover ceremony where the commissioner will literally hand off a ball between new orleans and the bay area, and you folks will be there for that transition, that handover. that's right. we're going to be there. al and i are going to be up on stage. we'll have jed york with us. mayor mahan and the host committee board chair, noho weintraub. that's really cool. that's like when the olympics are handed off to the ne

i'm janelle wang and i'm raj mathai. she's back in the headlines in an uncomfortable spotlight, ousted oakland mayor sheng thao in a federal courtroom today for her ongoing corruption and bribery case. we are getting a better sense of what kind of evidence the federal government has, and how long it may be before tao and her three co-defendants go to trial. nbc bay area's velena jones has the details. no comment today after today's hearing. former mayor sheng thao left the federal courthouse in silence. this morning. prosecutors handed over hundreds of thousands of files that make up some of the evidence in the case against her and three other defendants. when you look at the mountain of evidence in this case, i think it's unlikely this case will go to trial in 2025. tao, her longtime partner andre jones, and businessmen david and andy duong all appeared in court today. the duong's run california waste solutions, a recycling company contracted by oakland. each of them declined to answer any reporter questions today. crim

i'm gia vang and i'm janelle wang. growing backlash tonight against national retailers that have started eliminating or rolling back their diversity, equity and inclusion programs. latino leaders are calling for a boycott of those big stores. the movement is known as the latino freeze, and activists like civil rights leader dolores huerta are leading the charge. nbc bay area's damian trujillo is in san jose with the story. target is one of those being targeted for the nationwide boycott. this after the national chaininoined others in eliminating its diversity, equity and inclusion programs. the idea of a latino freeze is growing. the idea iss for latinos to stop shopping at big stores and restaurants like target, walmart and mcdonald's, places that recently rolled back their dei programs. the move followed similar action by the white house and federal government. if you don't respect our community, then you know you shouldn't have our dollars. civil rights leader dolores huerta is helping lead the charge for a national
