this morning nbc bay area's janelle wang introduces us to two california olympians both competing in the new olympic sports half pipe free skiing. >> reporter: when 20-year-old maddy bowman secured her spot for sochi this month, brita sigourney was the big person to congratulate her with a big embrace. maddy from lake tahoe and brita from carmel are elite half pipe free skiers. they often trade number one and number two spots in competition just as often as they trade laughs. >> we joke with each other all the time. there's never high tension in the start gate with us. we're always giving each other high-fives and hugs when we do well. it's just -- she's my best friend. there's not much rivalry there. >> reporter: it helps to have someone so close who can relate to the dangers of the sport. >> what we do is dangerous, but that's what we love. we love to push the limits and we love to go big and challenge ourselves and scare ourselves. and i mean, sometimes the limits push back, but it's kind of sometimes the price you have to pay and sometimes that price is really heavy. >> reporter:

. >> i'm janelle wang. we begin with a suspicious fire raising big concerns about the incredibly dry conditions around the bay area. a winter wildfire burned more than 40 acres near mt. hamilton in the south bay. we have live team coverage tonight. chief meteorologist jeff ranieri is tracking the dry conditions that fueled the fire as well as the air quality in the bay area. we begin with nbc bay area's marianne favro with an update on the status of the fire. >> reporter: i checked with cal fire and the 40-acre fire is now 100% contained. one engine and a small group of firefighters are going to stay up on the mountain on this new year's eve to make sure it stays that way. the brown, dry grass accelerated speed of the early morning fire in grant county park in san jose. 100 firefighters from san jose, cal fire and spring valley volunteer fire departments spent the day establishing a line around the flames. while air tankers dropped retardant from above. firefighters admit it's unusual to be battling a 40 ac

. >> i'm janelle wang in for jessica aguirre. the investigation happening in san jose's bariessa neighborhood near the corner of cape horn drive and cape kennedy drive. >> we just arrived on scene and, george, this is a nice neighborhood against the eastern foothills. what do we know at this hour? >> reporter: it is, raj and janelle. this is considered a middle class neighborhood. rather quiet. police officers lockedc. 3 off horn drive as they continue to investigate. we confirmed one of the officers shot a man after they say he would not drop his knife and charged at them. that man is at a hospital with non life threatening injuries. police got a call before 3:30 about two men arguing in front of a home. when they got out here, they saw the two men. why they were arguing and how they know each other, police are not saying. the man was shot at least once. now, the sjpd homicide unit will be coming out here any time there's an officer-involved shooting they come out here as a matter of protocol. no officers were hurt in the incide

i'm janelle wang in for raj mathai. >> i'm jessica aguirre. some facing a public safety crisis. now one san jose councilman running for reelection is proposing a half cent sales tax to hire more police officers. some argue the move is more politics than policy though, damian trujillo is there. >> reporter: jessica, they will decide whether to put this issue before the voters on the june ballot. residents of one new high crime area tell me anything to stop the violence. it's a trendy place to window shop or grab a bite, but over the past couple years, burglaries and robberies are also on the menu in san jose's willow glen neighborhood. >> it's out of control. >> reporter: president of the neighborhood association hears about it in every meeting. >> people come from the bay area and outside to rob san jose and commit all kinds of crimes because we don't have the resources. >> reporter: 300 officers have retired or resigned, forcing the department to close the burglary and vice unit among others. >> you can't make the cut to the police department and not expect, you know
