thanks for waning us, i'm janelle wang. >> i'm raj mathai. >>> more trouble in antioch. a police officer fired. it's not related to the department's ongoing text messaging scandal. this stems from a traffic stop that happened last year. nbc's pete suratos has the details. >> reporter: tonight, we've learned in mid-april, officer matthew nut was fired from the antioch police department. according to police chief ford, who i spoke to by phone, his firing was connected to a traffic stop in july 2022. the chief reviewed the body cam footage and placed officer nut on leave for his use of force during the traffic stop. after a months-oninternal investigation, the department decided to release the officer from the department two weeks ago. >> well, this is just very frustrating, as you can imagine. >> reporter: antioch mayor lamar thorpe said he first learned of the firing through news reports. the mayor is not privy to personnel decisions at the police department, but mayor thorpe wants better communication between agencies considering the fallout from a racist text messaging

i'm janelle wang. >> i'm raj mathai. >>> a second senior living facility in the bay area may lose its license. state regulators have taken legal action against atria of walnut creek after a dementia patient died from drinking a cleaning chemical. this was one of three poisoning deaths a the two separate atria locations. candice nguyen broke the story and joins us with new details. >> reporter: raj, this was where we first told you the victim's family said atria management initially blamed their father, saying he ate flaming hot cheetos and that sent him to the hospital. atria stood by that for months until we obtained the coroner's report confirming the man died from drinking a cleaning chemical. around midnight august 24, constantine was rushed to the hospital where he died a few days later. the cause of death, caustic injury to his esophagus and stomach. the state determined he was left unsupervised and got into an area that was supposed to be locked. a staffmember was criminally charged with elder abuse. the facility was fined. now state regulators are moving to revoke its license.

i'm janelle wang. >> i'm garvin thomas. >>> a carjacking and police chase turns deadly when the stolenck slams into a san francisco bus stop. >> nbc bay area's marianne favro spent her day at the crash site and has the latest developments. >> reporter: this carjacked truck crashed into five people, killing one. shattered windows, a bus stop leveled. this is the aftermath of a deadly collision at 16th and potrero in san francisco. police say it all started when a man carjacked this city vehicle. >> we know that during the carjacking, a physical struggle did occur. >> reporter: the suspect drove off and a short time later police and sheriff's deputies spotted the truck and a chase started. about a mile later, the truck slammed into an suv and then spun into a bus stop, sending five people to the hospital where one person later died. hector martinez owns a barbershop across the street and heard the crash. >> it sounded like a big explosion. >> reporter: he says he ran out to find several people hurt. >> i had noticed one

i'm janelle wang. >> i'm raj mathai. >>> pulling merchandise off the store shelves. mega retailer target is no longer selling some clothes that celebrate pride month. the company is saying it's removing these items after threats were made to employees. nbc bay area's ian cull explains the controversy and how lgbtq advocates are reacting. >> reporter: target has been selling pride clothes and items for a decade. this year it says it received complaints like never before, saying in a statement, "since introducing this year's collection, we've experienced threats impacting our team members' sense of safety and well-being while at work." adding, the stores are only removing merchandise at the center of the most confrontational behavior. one swimsuit is the focus of some conservative circles on social media. tweets calling to boycott the stores over the sale of swimsuits labeled "tuck friendly" for transgender women who have not had gender-affirming surgery. outside one california store, reactions were mixed. >> whoever believes in what they are, just let them be. >> i th

i'm janelle wang.ving her 11-year sentence for fraud. >> reporter: it has been 22 months of hearings and testimony and a few delays along the way. now that a judge granted elizabeth holmes a little extra time to bond with her new baby, she is beginning her prison sentence today. elizabeth holmes arrived at the all women's minimum security prison. that's her there. she arrived in an suv with her partner and her parents. after a few embraces, she walked away to begin serving that 11-year sentence. holmes was found guilty on four counts of defrauding investors. she is now 39 years old. she dropped out of stanford at 19 to find theranos which was valued at more than $9 billion. the company promised blood testing technology that could deliver hundreds of test results from a single drop of blood. only delivered flawed results for things like hiv, cancer and miscarriage using existing technology, not theranos technology. holmes and her former romantic partner were ordered to pay $450 million in restitution. l

i'm janelle wang. >> i'm raj mathai. >>> the nbc bay area exclusive, u.s. postal inspectors are telling us about a recent robbery in antioch. it's a disturbing trend that we're seeing happening across the bay area. pete suratos has surveillance video. >> reporter: u.s. postal inspectors shared these pictures of a getaway car. he allegedly stole postmaster keys, which can be used to open mailboxes. octavia lives in the area and shared surveillance video of the suspect hopping into the getaway car moments after the robbery. >> crazy to me. it was right in front of my house. >> reporter: the mail carrier wasn't injured, thankfully. the u.s. postal inspector is offering a $50,000 reward for information leading to arrest. >> the carrier's not going to fight for the keys. turn over the postal keys, immediately informed the post office and law enforcement, and that brought us here. >> reporter: matthew norfleet is a local u.s. postal inspector and says antioch has seen an uptick in these robberies across the bay area. another $50,000 reward was recently announced

. >> i'm janelle wang. >>> the man accused in the murder of tech executive bob lee was in court todayo set a date for his preliminary hearing. today we got new insight into the night that bob lee was killed. newly released court documents, images first obtained by nbc bay area, show some of the last interactions bob lee had with nima momeni at millennium tower hours before that fatal stabbing. >> reporter: in documents filed by momeni's defense attorney, security camera photos appear to show bob lee and nima momeni standing in an elevator inside millennium tower. the pair walk together to a bmw in millennium tower garage, both men get into the bmw. in a filing last week by nima momeni's defense attorney arguing her client should be released from custody, she included letters of support from friends and family including nine new images from the night bob lee was killed. among those who wrote letters of support for momeni, his mother and his sister khazar momeni. they describe nima momeni as generous and kind. they write, he even helped pay for medical procedures for friends and family

i'm janelle wang.in the oakland unifies school district are on strike. bob redell is at oakland high with more. >> reporter: oakland unified says both sides, they and the teachers, have made great progression in negotiations. early yesterday indicated that they were close to a deal. the union obviously did not agree with that assessment. they are on strike. you can see the teachers here outside of oakland high school. they walked off the job this morning. they have been picketing outside ever since. the union that represents the 3,000 teachers, counselors and other staff are on strike because they say that they have not been able to come to an agreement on a new contract with oakland unifies. they accuse them of failing to come to the bargaining table in good faith. the oakland education association bargaining team tells nbc bay area they waited days for a counter offer from the district. they have been at the bargaining table. they say the district has been absent and tight-lipped. the district propos
