. >>> let's get to nbc meteorologist janessa webb who spent the weekend tracking ida's path janessa, we're just a few hours away from daylight where we can really assess the damage >> yeah. you know, i'm really concerned about laplace, louisiana right now the national hurricane center and national weather service issuing a flash flood emergency. i was watching that overnight, and what happened was new orleans to baton rouge got a little bit lucky the brunt of this storm went parallel and really hit leblanc parish over 13 inches of rain has fallen in that area, and that's why that flash flood emergency is in place. look at this broad system. i mean it completely takes over areas of the deep south, now making its way into mississippi. we have over 60,000 people that are dealing with power outages so now it's starting to push the center of this circulation pushing out towards mississippi. so we are finally going to see a break from the wind flow and all the rain that southeast louisiana is dealing with. still i have a category 1 storm, sustained winds of 75 miles per hour the problem, w

. >> let's bring in nbc meteorologist janessa webb on the latest for the day ahead hi, janessa, good morning. >> hi, good morning. that fire danger will continue as red flag warnings are in place across the central plains into parts of northern california and it's all due to the heat that's going to continue to build across the plains this afternoon. right now we have about 40 million people that will be impacted with this heat. and it will continue to spread across the east coast with heat warnings in place for the deep south. now, we do see a transition in the jet stream so if you're across the pacific northwest, the coastal areas, things will start to really cool off this afternoon really not the case for chicago. look at daytime highs 92 degrees. and most sections of this part of the country the heat index will be above 100 degrees. the heat will continue to build across the tennessee valley into the ohio valley, pittsburgh tomorrow afternoon 93. but this will be csistonencal w. severe weather even for the upper midwest. we'll talk more about the fire danger coming up, guys >> al

webb janessa, what are you looking out for? >> ladies, you know, it's pretty bad in new orleans and baton rouge, but it could've been a lot worse. it's the parishes in between where we saw the storm run parallel now, look how big this system is, and it's 13 hours later since landfall this is a broad area that this system is taking over almost eight states right now, and it's going to continue its track. right now we still have a cat 1 hurricane with sustained winds of 75 miles per hour the problem is this one was very speedy as it was across the gulf but it slowed down dramatically. now it's dragging on out of the north to 9 miles per hour. and that has allowed the moisture flow to really cause a problem across southeastern louisiana. now it's making its way into mississippi. we're watching the severe weather threat now the national hurricane center, you can see the latest forecast i do think this turns into a tropical storm for early-morning hours. but that's not the issue the category with this one does not matter it's the to

janessa, good morning. >> hi, good morning. now we do have three tropical storms and the problem with tropical storm grace, it's currently over haiti, western haiti where that epicenter of that earthquake happened on saturday and what we've got with the forecast, we thought it was going to hit with topography, land and mountains and then die down it's the complete opposite it has gained some fuel and it's now going back into open water jamaica is up next sustained winds have picked up just in the last hour. what's going to happen it goes on the northern side of jamaica and it will continue to really gain fuel as we go into thursday friday potentially a hurricane and then it hits land. now tropical storm fred is still not acting right and it continues to rev up this morning, hopefully going to die down by later this afternoon now we do have a severe storm threat across atlanta. and we're going to be dealing with severe weather throughout the afternoon. that entire storm system will be impacting the mid-atlantic to the northeast.

. >>> janessa webb pulled do you believe duty as she is tracking three big storms janessa, good morning. >> hi, good morning. a ton going on throughout the weekend we saw tropical storm fred get its act together now it is. impacting southwest of florida the trajectory of this storm system is now making its way east but it will soon make its way north. that's why we have the florida panhandle on its way for possible landfall tonight. tropical storm fred will be ready tuesday, wednesday, thursday afternoon because it's colliding with a front it will cause moisture eved we later this week. now tropical depression grace that really was strong as it started to form, it's interacting with some land and that's why we're starting to see it lose its force. the problem is this will be a big-time rain maker for puerto rico all the way into the dominican republic where tropical storm alerts are extending into haiti as well this storm system will sag into the south. we're going to watch our eye because it goes back into warm water and it heads back to the gulf tropical dep shall increasing cool, com

janessa, what can you tell us? we'll get to janessa webb in just a minute. we are going to bring you back to ali velshi in just a moment. hurricane ida made landfall this afternoon, and currently remains a strong category 2 storm. we have been keeping an eye on a number of alerts of damage from the storm, and power is the primary issue, and entergy is the power company, and they are out of power and it's causing an imbalance in transmission. this is a compounded problem because they need that for a lot of things, including pumping water away from the levees. let me be clear, we have no reports of damage to levees. there's reports of flash flooding and an emergency that has been issued by the weather service, but that's not pursuant to damage of the levees. we will keep an eye on that and continue to update you as the evening goes on. we have plenty of correspondents out in the field, and ali velshi is in new orleans, and janessa web, we'll start with you. what can you tell us? >> we are dealing with a destructive and deadly storm system and it's dark across

. >>> let's find out where henri is now and what's ahead for us nbc's janessa webb is reporting from the tip of long island out in montauk >> reporter: i'm getting lucky this morning where the behavior of the storm system has been up and down and ifyou're across new york city, washington, d.c., philadelphia you are seeing the brunt of this system right now yes, it has been downgraded to a tropical depression. the impacts though, they are still the same flash flood advisories and watches. they are still in place across new york city to the philadelphia area and even southern new england throughout the afternoon. look at some of these totals we're not done with the storm. at least two to three inches in some spots and then isolated areas up to 4 to 5 inches. the winds really not going to be an issue today going to be allowing power lines dipping back together but it's the rainfall, the storm surge we're actually done with look at current radar. the heavier bands are starting to make their way in throughout the area the latest track for the storm syst doesn't pusemuth. new orleans, 97.

good morning, janessa. >> hi. good morning yes, looking forward to the weekend. but if you're across the east coast, man, it's going to be a soggy one. it's due to steal the leftovers of tropical storm fred now that is post-tropical. it's starting to make its way offshore but then we have an angry system that continues to really brew across the atlantic. it's sitting in some warm bath water, and it continues to gain steam. tropical storm henri 525 miles southeast of cape hatteras, north carolina sustained winds of 65 miles per hour so if you're across wilmington all the way into killsdevil beach, you are seeing some high surf this morning. now, this storm system is very feisty, and i do think it gains more steam going into later today where it turns into a cat 1 hurricane. it will sit in this warm body of water and aims more to the north. and we're looking at a potential landfall sunday into monday across northern ne 80s ayou're across the deep south, it's steamy. and then that wildfire danger, we still have the heat that's building across the pacific northwest.

hi, janessa. >> good morning. this is going to be a topic all weekend long this storm system finally formed, but the problem is that it's going to make its way into the gulf and cause conditions to really worsen across the northern gulf coast. so right now we do have sustained winds of 40 miles per hour, northwest movement at 12 miles per hour what's going to happen as it makes it into a warm gulf, it will act as fuel for the storm system and by tomorrow morning we will have a cat-1 hurricane then things are still up in the air. this is still tracking as a cat-2, but potentially a major hurricane that's now aiming for eastern to potentially southwestern louisiana so all of the state going to be on our radar en alabamaevll for the rockies, mid 90s for st. louis >>> so, we have wind concerns and then major flood concerns for new orleans. talking about 15-plus inches more on that forecast coming up. >> going to be a tough weekend for them janessa, thank you >>> a dangerous new challenge is flooding social media. it i

janessa? >> kendis, first and foremost, i'm okay and my crew is okay. we are just seeing this torrential rain. the reason why i'm bending down, when i stand up, we have seen a dramatic change in the last hour. it is t belting rain that is making its way across west hampton beach that you are currently seeing. now just in the last 15 to 20 minutes as bill said, we're seeing the storm system continuing to move pretty quickly. the visibility is really reduced in this area, but what we've really noticed, the rain. man, it has come down and it's very torrential at this time. also, we've been dealing with kind of a lull in the weather pattern so we're dealing with that mixture of calm conditions and then it picks up bhuns again. the winds, they've been around 30 toee 40 miles per hour but t biggest difference is definitely the rainfall. if you can see out there, as i turn my tback, you can see the pelting rain across this area, but the seas, they are starting to pick up. we'll continue to watch that storm surge as high tide cycle is expected to come in. kendi

let's go back to nbc news meteorologist janessa web.they may be another levee collapse -- which is that just because it's now a category one storm, the danger is far from over, and that's just what we heard from the sheriff. >> the impacts, they are stretching white and long, and i'm really concerned still about louisiana. we are seeing reports of flood emergency in place, and it's gonna stay in place for the next hour. we saw rainfall, rains about 1 to 5 inches per hour, so major flooding that is going to be monumental across that area, and mostly southeast louisiana. i do not want to see the photos that are about to come out and all the damage when we see sunrise. this will be devastating across the area. the problem is you can see it from our radar, this is a large system, and it is now managing to make its way into sections of mississippi. we have people without power in that section of the country, and this is going over i-ten to i-12 and bringing in torrential rain. now we are doing with a strong sided system, the eastern quadrant

janessa, where is the storm headed? >> we are still dealing with a deadly and destructive storm system that continues to race inland. the problem is that for the last 11 hours it has dramatically slowed down. this is going to be prolonged moisture and the problem is it's not just impacting southeast louisiana right now. now it is starting to go into parts of mississippi and the panhandle of florida. into alabama as well. these are allowing severe weather as well to spark up and we've had tornado warnings now in place across central mississippi. and that is going to last for at least ten more minutes. yes it has been downgraded the impacts are still the same. st. john's parish is really a concern right now as we are dealing with five inch per hour rates of rainfall. that is dramatic and it will be monumental flooding across this area. just checking lake pontchartrain new orleans getting a bit of a break but we are seeing that lake rise about four feet just in the last ten hours. that is going to allow the storm surge to

joining us right now is nbc news meteorologist michelle grossman and nbc meteorologist janessa webb in long beach, new york. michelle, starting with you, the latest tracking we got a couple hours ago, we're looking at -- what are we looking at in terms of possible paths and strength? >> yeah, hi, good to see both of you. and we are looking at a very strong tropical storm right now. we anticipate it's become a category 1 storm later on today and we also anticipate it to make landfall on long island as a category 1 storm. that hasn't happened in 36 years. let's take a look at the warnings. they are quite literally warnings for today. it's the calm before the storm, so to speak, get everything prepared now for a hurricane, treat it like a tornado as well. we're going to see trees coming down with saturated ground. hurricane warnings in the red. montauk, new haven, islip. and all the way down to the jersey shore, point pleasant beach, be prepared as well too. this is the latest, this came out at 5:00. next advisory at 8:00 and then 11:00 and then 2:00 p.m. we'll see changes. right now it i

janessa, can you hear me?nd cut to kathy. >> hey, i can't hear you very well. we still have a very strong storm. i know it has been downgraded to a tropical system. but, man, the winds continue to whip out here. and the storm surge is really starting to pick up across westhampton beach. look at these angry seas that we're seeing. i'm going to hold onto these poles out here because the winds have just picked up in the last two hours. we've been out here since about 4:00 a.m., and, man, just in the last few hours things have dramatically changed even though the system has been downgraded. everyone's talking about yes it's now a tropical storm. but the impacts, they continue to be the same. take a look at what we are seeing right now. the visibility has really been reduced across westhampton beach. now, no reports of any power outages, but still asking people to stay at home. i just checked flight delays. we have over 900 delays across the northeast. now, i've been watching this storm system since tuesday as it f

richard. >> janessa, talk about that. tropical storm season, right?well as the history of haiti and it facing tropical storms and hurricanes, remnants of fred, for instance, tropical storm grace. dig into that for a little bit. >> yeah, we have been dealing with a series of tropical waves that have continued to go in the same direction. so we first dealt with elsa, then we've dealt with fred, and even haiti was impacted by those storm systems. now we have a larger one that is really starting to come together, tropical storm grace. right now the national hurricane center has issued tropical storm warning across puerto rico, dominican republic. i'm forecasting by tomorrow afternoon those tropical storm warning go into the haiti area. the reason for that, you have a well-organized tropical storm right now with sustained winds of 45 miles per hour, and the movement is very quick out of the west at 23 miles per hour. so the latest track is really important because you start to see this storm system still as a tropical storm heading to the haiti area, going

we check in with meteorologist janessa webb. janessa, what's going on there? >> good morning, sam.now everyone is trying to beat the heat, but it's still in the south central and western tear. tough conditions if you're not a hot weather fan. 69 million people are going to be impacted by heat advisories for today. these heatwaves continue. this southbound our fourth heatwave across sections of the northeast as we're dealing with daytime highs. the feel-like temperature going to be about 110 from the mid-atlantic all the way into the northeast. air temperatures today across the board from the tennessee valley to the ohio valley in the mid-90s. i wish i could say it backs off for tomorrow, but it spreads down more to the deep south. into charleston, a high of 89 for your friday. this comes with severe weather unfortunately for the upper midwest. there is that enhanced risk of some isolated tornadoes as well. so the flood threat is pretty big from wisconsin into green bay. could see some localized flooding up to 3 to 5 inches. sam, do your best to try to beat the heat. >> people, be c

let's go to meteorologist janessa webb for the for raft, how, janessa, how is it looking?jonathan, i wish i had better news, sloppy day on the east coast. yesterday, we were talking about that fall feel. things will start to change. we're in august and this is the hottest month. a few more days of cooler temperatures but the rain is still going to be impact across the east coast and we're talking potentially blooding rain across the carolina coast into southern new england. the forecast is calling for a foot of rain in the outer banks and florida panhandle with the possibility of 6 to 10 inches. the entire storm will bring warmer air, due to a warm front into the boston area into sections of southern maine. still another two to three inches in that area. so very wet conditions for your wednesday afternoon. look at these daytime highs, this is nice and breathable air. humidity is low across atlanta, 82 degrees. most of these spots that you're seeing are 10 to 15 degrees below average. even for thursday, we're still on the mild side, philadelphia, a high of 85 degrees, then

let's go to meteorologist janessa webb for the forecast. good morning, janessa. the week so well. noaa came out with an updated report on hurricane season yesterday. things have increased. 65% chance of an above normal hurricane this year, and you can see from the stats now, they are forecasting 15 to 21 named storms. that includes the five named storms we've already seen this year. and now major hurricanes, three to five. we're going to be watching this pretty closely and also a wave coming off the african coast is starting to make its way offshore, and now the national hurricane center forecasting a 40% chance of development for this storm system. so we're going to be watching that. closer to home, we have this major fire danger across the pacific northwest. things continue to heat up. and today dry thunderstorm activity across this area along with gusty winds up to at least 40 miles per hour. it's the desert southwest. we're going to be watching pretty closely. 16 million people will be impacted by heat warnings, heat advisories, and some sections of the count

and let's go to meteorologist janessa webb for the forecast. janessa, how's it looking out there?y, jonathan, man. you had all good news there. i wish the weather was the same for portions of the southeast into the mid-atlantic. we're watching a pretty sloppy day across these areas with flash flood watches. they're now put in place across the florida panhandle to the carolinas. this rain has been consistent since yesterday. ite e going to continue today into early tomorrow. we're going to watch these flash flood watches with minor flooding across columbia, south carolina, into the raleigh-durham area. it's really across the coast that we're going to see major flooding. we could see up to 4 inches. it's all associated with this front that's sagging well to the south. you're probably noticing a lot cooler air. it's almost like a fall feel we have across the mid-atlantic all the way into the northeast even for areas of the deep south, and that's what's really steaming up at this rate. the front starts to push offshore, but the cooler air will definitely stay in place for most section

janessa. we were talking to you last week about the henri. now ida. how dangerous could this storm be? >> you know, lindsey, this is as bad as it gets. i say that because ida is not at peak performance yet. we have less than 24 hours before the storm system makes landfall. right now it continues to grow. you can see how large it is just? the last hour we're starting to see the bands make its way across florida. and closely i'm starting to notice an eye starting to form. that means the storm system continues to get stronger. let's get to the facts right now . we have 80-mile-per-hour sustained winds. it's 510 miles southeast of new orleans, louisiana. it's still a cat 1. but that's going to be changing, i expect, as we go into our next update. now what's helping us with the storm system, it's moving very quickly. the problem with that, if you haven't evacuated yet you're running out of time. potentially there is time for the storm system to slow down. look at the latest track right now. overnight is really going to be vital with that current hurricane,

meteorologist janessa webb is here with the forecast. janessa, what have you got?nice to see a quiet weather france across the nation. that's what we're seeing. we're seeing a few raindrops starting to pick up across the deep south into the mid-atlantic going into your tuesday, but today the severe weather threat is very low across this area. this is a very sad rated area. you could see a possible 3 to 4 inches in the next 24 hours, but that's the biggest weather story we have for today. across this area, cooler air is starting to make its way in. it's all associated with this cold front, and it really sticks around in the raleigh, north carolina, area. tuesday things start to dry out. the other big weather story as we start out august. man, some cooler air starting to make its way in. this is normally our hottest time of the year known as the dog days of summer, and we're really not seeing that. look at daytime highs for the midwest, the northeast. we're back in the upper 70s to lower 80s in most spots, and all that blue means we're below average for this time of

msnbc meteorologist janessa webb is tracking fred's path, as well as a second storm now, grace.u've been vocal on this on twitter. how worried are you for people in its path? >> it's not one, but two, as you said, this has been a very fluid situation overnight with tropical storm grace. the problem is, you have two different storms and their behaviors are very different. this just coming in, due to tropical storm grace, we have tropical alerts, warnings in place for puerto rico into the virgin islands. so with grace, by the moment, this storm system continues to get stronger. now, the behavior of tropical depression fred, it's currently over land and it's very disorganized. the problem is, most people are trying to focus more on grace because it's a larger storm system, but what's going to happen with tropical depression fred, it's going to go back into open water. i'm expecting this storm system to reenergize, just in the next few hours, it's already starting to make its way offshore. and that's why tropical alerts are still in place for the florida keys, and portions of southw

janessa, good to see you this hour.h what you are seeing so far and what we are expecting. you are essentially where this thing could feasibly make landfall for the first time. >> reporter: yeah, i mean it has been over 30 years that we've seen a cat 1 hurricane, and you know the prep here in long beach has been very strong all day. we've had a turn of events. it first was a tropical storm, and then now a cat 1, so people are really taking heed to that. but it is a saturday. people are trying to enjoy their last weekend, this is officially the last weekend of summer so people really want to be out and about. so hundreds of people still trying to enjoy the day, but, yasmin, i have been here since 6:00 a.m. and we saw a ton of sunshine but things are slowly but surely starting to change. you can start to see the high tide. it is starting to make its way in. now, i did talk to some officials this morning, and they told me that the high tide that came in earlier was right about here. now, we are expecting a storm surge 3 to

let's go to janessa webb in long beach, new york. we have folks on the boardwalk and they're walking out and about. how does it look to you now? >> reporter: you know, it's actually a pretty great day. people are not taking real heed to this storm system, but now that it has been upgraded, we're hoping people will start to take notice of it. as you can see, we still have hundreds of people that are enjoying their saturday afternoon. but i have talked to a lot of them, they are starting to get prepared now that we are starting to see a hurricane. you can see these sand dunes. i've talked to some officials that they started to put these up early this morning, because they are taking precautions. this storm surge is going to be very major across this area compared to the winds and they want to limit the flooding. so that's what they're trying to do right now. also, officials have told me there is no swimming allowed in the water here at long beach. some people are listening to that. just a few over there, you can see haven't listened to

joining me now is meteorologist janessa webb. this is so devastating. >> we're still dealing with that for the coastline of haiti, but you know, to me this is really going to be an international and national level of response. we're just starting with the cleanup and where things are happening across this area and water is still filtering in that area. u.s. g.s. no reports of threats for tsunamis across the u.s., but still for the coastline where we could see up to 10 feet of water. so, this is definitely a fluid situation. and what i want to say is we've been seeing multiple aftershocks. so we had the big quake of 7.2, but just in the last half hour another magnitude earthquake of 5.2. and that's really going to continue throughout the day. so that's going to heighten the tsunami threat and then make things even more impossible to really clean up. so, as you said, in 2010 we had that big earthquake, definitely caused a ton of casualties. so we're just going to continue to wait throughout the day to find out more about that. on top of that, we have a hu
