let's get to the heart of it new york's times square where nbc meteorologist janessa webb is bracing the storm janessa, good morning. >> the winds are starting to pick up. they have subside a bit, but now we're in times square and they're starting to pick up. let's talk about this storm. throughout the day, you're going to hear people say this storm was an underachiever we've only seen 6 or 7 inches in the area of new york what happened is we had sleet, rain make its way in, and that's what's causing the less amount of snowfall we've seen it's the interior of new york where we're seeing overexceeding the amount of snow right now people are waking up you do not want to be on these roadways we've seen our public officials out here trying to take care of people, but, man, you're going to be buried in snow throughout the afternoon. this storm system is going to sweep out of the northeast early this morning so before sunrise it's going to push offshore. we might see a little bit of sunshine by this afternoon behind this storm is a lot cooler air, but right now here in times square, the win

what's expected to hit the northeast over the next 48 hours let's get right to nbc meteorologist janessa webb she's got the latest on this stomp. >> good morning, frances and phillip. i was talking early afternoon. this storm system has take an change you can see from our satellite and composite radar, it's already in north carolina causing icing. it's going quickly make its way up to d.c., northern new york. you're going to notice the changes. our forecast has changed for d.c. and parts of pennsylvania, now forecasting only 1 to 3 inches that area will stay on the warmer side. wintry mixes, sleet mixed with rain impacting that area 8 to 12 inches for new york city i do think the metro area, if you're on the east side, you'll see a little rain mix in over time the higher terrain, that's where it's going fw a problem. we could see up to 14 to 18 inches in some spots, and then we still have to talk about the winds that are going to cause widespread power outages i'll talk about that coming up. >> problems on problems. janessa, thanks for keeping us up to date on that. >>> a record 16.7 million

. >>> time now to check in with nbc meteorologist janessa webb for more on our forecast these last few days of the year. janessa? >> good morning you two. good morning, everyone we are dealing with a few snowflakes that are falling across the great lakes but it's transitioning into kind of a wintery mix due to temperatures being above that freezing mark. i think the bigger weather story throughout the week is this coast-to-coast system that's already sparking up across southern california all the way to the southwest where we're dealing with rain and snow and this is making winter weather alerts available across the central plains to the upper midwest. this will continue to expand into the east coast as we go into the rest of the week. look at our snow totals right now forecasting that potential from denver to madison, wisconsin, up to 6 to 8 inches this will be a dual weathermaker with heavy rain and severe weather threat across the central plains into the mississippi valley a high of 50 today. but fargo feeling like winter, 14 with a little bit of sunshine watching this storm system

kathy park is in boston, janessa webb is in new york city.athy, conditions which are getting worse where you are. what are you seeing and hearing any impact on what we've been talking about vaccine distribution, vaccine testing? how does the snow affect that? >> reporter: hey, hallie, good morning to you. as you can see the storm isn't letting up. the snowfall rate in the boston area is about one to two inches per hour. it's eight inches on the ground right now. when the storm system officially moves on out of here the next couple of hours looking at over a foot. most of massachusetts is under a winter storm warning until 1:00 this afternoon. folkser encouraged to stay indoors so crews can clear the roadways but as you mentioned we are following this major nor'easter, but also tracking the pandemic as well and people are encouraged to check with their test providers to ensure covid test something moving forward because of the inclement weather and we made phone calls to area hospitals and as far as vaccine rollouts go the weather doesn't seem
