i have to say, welcome to our visitor from connecticut, superintendent janet robinson of the public-school system. i know janet has been working with families, children, teachers, first responders, and a unbelievable organization of the child center in new haven to help people work through this tragedy with their students. i look forward to hearing more about this. last month at sandy hook, a place where children should be able to learn and grow, the and comprehensible actions six adults and 20 innocent children were murdered in cold blood. we have seep similar acts of terror in aurora and okay land and tucson, all across the country. -- oakland and tucson, all across the country. we see the loss of life every day from gun violence all across this nation. after the unthinkable tragedy in newtown, president obama spoke to the country and he asked us are we doing enough to protect our children? the answer he admitted is no. that must change. that is why we are here today. today's hearing we will hear from people who deal with the effects of gun violence every day. the wide range of experienc

janet robinson. >> thank you very much. i'm here to give am face to the children, the staff, the families of sandy hook in newtown, connecticut. on a beautiful winter morning in december, buses dropped off their precious cargo. nearly 500 elementary children who filed in their school with the expectations of all little children that good things will be happening today. and little in the way of cares. maybe what's for lunch today? will i have a chance to play with my friends at recess? in the first three classrooms in the front hallway, the little first graders' coats were hung up and the morning routines began with their circle time on the rug with their teacher. there they discussed the calendar, the activities of the day, along with an activity for responsive classroom. this was the typical routine of sandy hook elementary school, a place that excudes -- exudes caring, happiness, nurturing from the moment you walkthrough the doors. if you pass a child or an adult in the halts, you'll get a smile and cheerful greeting. chi

we sat down with the superintendent of schools, janet robinson, shortly after dismissal. >> thing >> the thing that had been missing at the new sandy hook location were the voices and the laughter of children. >> and that was there today. hookeporter: did you have any parents not able to just let the hand go? >> that's very hard. i... there were parents who wanted to put their child on the bus and just couldn't quite do it. so understandable. >> reporter: over the holidays, volunteers helped to make the new school feel like the old s hool. the students' own desks and chairs were moved. the hope was familiarity would bring comfort. i'm told one parent was watching their kid and said the kid really felt comfortable when they actually saw their old cubbyhole. >> those are the things they know. the children... children like things that are a routine they know, and they like the objects they know. >> reporter: there's no instruction manual for this, is there? >> i've said that a number of know likes lately. there's no instruction manual. >> reporter: so what has been aliding you? a what's

janet robinson is superintendent of newtown public schools. along with debbie liedline, chairwoman of the newtown school board. appreciate you both being with us. >> thank you. >> how are the students adjusting? >> everybody is in a little different place, but the day that the children came in off the buses the very first day, i'm telling you, those children didn't just walk off the buses. they hopped, they skipped. when they saw their teachers waiting for them, they hugged them. they were happy to be back. i think getting back in a routine is helping them a great deal. >> in terms of kinds of questions people have had, what has it been like over the last month? >> i think people are trying to come to grips with what happened and what the future is going to be. i think that's one of the biggest questions. also, they want to be insured that going forward, their children are going to be safe and that their needs are going to be met based on what happened. >> in terms of counseling, you had counseling available to both adults and kids. >> right.

janet robinson. us. >> nice to see you, lawrence. >> ava's note said what everybody in newtown wants is for you to ban semiautomatic weapons, and i'm sorry to say that is not apparently what everyone in newtown wants. we were just talking in the last segment about patricia clark, who is a high-ranking nra official who lives in newtown. and as i think you know, newtown in the past has had a fairly large community in support for extreme positions on gun rights. >> ava is one of our fourth grade students, and ava speaks for the heart of the students. the students, not just the students at sandy hook but the students throughout the district had their sense of safety shattered by the incident. and ava is forthright enough to speak about how the children and their families feel about this issue. >> what i was struck by in your testimony is there is no amount of time that can pass that can make hearing another account about what happened there, another voice, today it was you, that doesn't absolutely horrif
