janet shamlian is there. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you.ille. university officials are bracing for another wave of emotion because the death of yeardley love rocked the campus, rocked the community. authorities are concerned how it will play out here saying there is still a very deep wound. love was 22 and just weeks from graduating from uva when she was found dead in her apartment in may of 2010. one day later george hughley, a lacrosse player and love's former boyfriend was charged in her murder. for the campus and the community it was almost beyond belief. could it be the death of a student athlete had come at the hands of another? >> we are greatly distraught and unsettled to have lost yeardley in such a tragic, violent and haunting manner. >> reporter: it was haunting. yeardley was found face down on a pillow in a pool of her own blood. her roommate originally reported it as an alcohol overdose and love had spent time at a campus bar earlier in the day. but the medical examiner ruled she died of blunt force trauma to the head. hughley

nbc's janet shamlian joins us with more on houston's struggles. good morning. that commercial success continued through the '90s, but by the end of that decade, signs of trouble were definitely starting to emerge. there were addiction and marital issues, and it was the beginning of a slow and downward spiral. ♪ oh, i want to dance with somebody ♪ >> reporter: it was a life of peaks and valleys for whitney houston. among the awards and accolades by the late 1990s her behavior had changed. late for interviews, canceled concert performances. it usually happened at the last minute. in 2000, airport security in hawaii found marijuana in her and husband bobby brown's luggage. neither was ever charged. months later, she was scheduled to perform at friend clive davis' induction into the rock 'n' roll hall of fame. but she never showed. that same year, she was invited to sing at the academy awards. and then uninvited. she continued to lose weight. fueling rumors of drug use. finally admitting it in a 2002 interview with diane sawyer. >> if you had to name t

first nbc's janet shamlian has the story. ♪ >> reporter: kristin was as active as an 18-year-old getsamily decided to try surfing on their hawaiian vacation, kristin was all for it. she got up on the board, but when her legs started feeling strange, kristin headed to shore. >> i started to walk up the beach. i made it about 50 yards before i couldn't make it anymore. i collapsed. >> reporter: initially everyone thought she was stung by a jellyfish but it was soon apparent the injury was more serious. >> we didn't know why there was anything wrong. she just suddenly couldn't walk. by the time we got to the hospital she was essentially paralyzed from the waist down. >> reporter: when they returned to colorado, kristin was confined to a wheelchair and struggling to navigate the family's stair-filled home. although there was no fall kristin had suffered a spinal injury. a rare condition known as surfer's miyelopathy. >> after i heard the news -- here it goes. nbc's janet shamlian is in charlotte, virginia with more. >> good morning to you.s under way, we're learning the relationship between george huguely and je d yeardley love was tumt wous and sometimes violent and often fuelled by alcohol. the bar is set very high in the trial. they have to prove intent. as we learned in court on wednesday, it could all hinge on an email. george huguely walked into court in handcuffs and shackles. now 24 and considerably thinner than when he was arrested in may of 2010. but the murder of his on again/off again girlfriend, yeardley love. huguely has pleaded not guilty to all charges, including first-degree murder. in opening statements, prosecutors told jurors they have an email that huguely sent love two days before she died that will prove intent to kill. they say that the email reads in part -- i should have killed you. after learning love had slept with someone else. >> the prosecution is initially suggesting first-degree murder. this is, this is not only was he responsible for her death, but he had planned it and he had thought a
