megyn: janice, thank you so much.vacuations and preparations are well underway where hurricane irene is expected to hit in less than 24 hours. jonathan serrie live from atlantic beach. >> reporter: though we are still under sunny skies and the center of the storm is still well out at sea, already we are seeing much heavier than usual surf. you can see surfers taking advantage of it. as we pan down the beach you can see a combination of residents and visitors taking advantage of what may be one of the last days they can come and enjoy this beach. many visitors are heading the warnings to evacuate the outlying barrier island seeking higher ground on the mainland. over here you can see owners of the condominiums here have installed shutsers on their windows. they deployed the shutters protecting them from flying debris once the storm arrives over the course of the weekend. you can see behind me a few diehard visitors and residents taking advantage of what may be their very last day to enjoy on the beach before having to

when janice was talking in her weather report about storm surge.w low-lying this area is. the small do you understand and vehicle table would give only limited protection against storm surge. the folks at this hotel where we are saying say whenever a hurricane comes they are always guaranteed some water at least in their parking lot and in a severe storm it could be worse. you may have noticed the boarding on the windows of the restaurants at hotel. they have been putting them up all morning to protect the windows from flying debris. residents have been taking precautions. most of them heeding the mandatory evacuations, not want to go take any chances. the cdc recommends people evacuating or staying put in their homes, whatever they decide to do carry at least 3-5 days of food and water, and also to stock up on at least a week of any prescription medicines they may need. chances are that the power will be knocked out in these barrier island communities. so you need to be self-sufficient, whether you are hunkering dunn here or preferably as official

janice, we'll begin with you. last night, and we've all become so adept at reading the radar over these days, it looked like the storm lost its back end. it became kind of an arrowhead going up. something, we have to thank something for the fact that it lost some of its energy. >> you know, we noticed a little bit of that early on. right before the storm made landfall at cape lookout, there seemed to be dry air being intrained into the system. hurricanes don't like dry air. they thrive off moisture from warm oceans. they always tend to weaken when they move over cooler water or over land. that's what shuts them down. they need warm air from the ocean. this was getting dry air pulled into it. it gradually got more and more. it maintained category 1 up the coast, uppiersy shore. it dropped off a bit at coney island when it made land fall. winds dropped to 65 miles an hour. all the officials that made all the calls for people to evacuate here, you couldn't wait until the last hour to do it. you had to do it ahead of

hey, janice, how is it looking. >> the million dollar question, where is it head.you should know your evacuation plan as well, i'm not entirely convinced it couldn't be a mid-atlantic northeast storm and we're five days out and it could lead a broadening of the forecast. let's look at it, first of all, 70 miles south-southeast of grand turks and the bahamas will be dealing with probably a category 3-4 storm and it could be devastating for them. 5 to 10 inches across the 700 islands that make up the bahamas and a storm surge, of 9 to 13 feet. and this could be devastating for them. so, we will keep a close watch there. and let's look at the tropical storm models, that is what makes up the cone of uncertainty. and, right now, we're thinking the carolinas and cape hatteras, could be in the bull's-eye and these models have been wavering significantly, 24, 48 hours, we talked about a landfall across south florida, as a minimal hurricane and now, we're dealing with the potential for a category-4, and as i said, coming very close to the east coast, perhaps, new england an

jenna: janice dean is live at the fox weather center with more. 11:00 is when we get updates. j.d., what do we know about this storm? >> reporter: no significant changes in the strength now, jenna, however, i heard jon scott said this could become a category four and it looks like with the new advisory that could indeed could happen in the next 12-24 hours. certainly the satellite presentation of the storm is wonderful in terms of looking at a storm itself, a hurricane, and how strong it is. obviously, this is a very destructive storm, but in terms of the aesthetics, this is a beautiful looking hurricane, or starting to -- you can see the four quadrants and the colder cloud tops and the darker shades of red, you can see that well defined eye, something we haven't seen in the last few days. category three right now, 115 miles per hour sustained winds, this is going to barrel through the length of the bahamas and possibly be very destructive and devastating for them, we could see easily 6-12 inches of rainfall, 7-11-foot storm surge for them, so this is going to be one that they

host: janice crouse is with concerned women for america. let's take a look at a report from "politico." political murder to natural disaster. calling the event last week a wake-up call from above. she is not the first public figure to call the hurricane a message from the almighty. others suggest that new orleans may have triggered hurricane katrina with their gay pride parade. it is not a mainstay -- mainstream view. guest: that is an extreme way of putting things. everybody says natural disasters are a wake-up call. we have to recognize that these kinds of things happen. we have to be prepared for them. it is a wake-up call for us to get our house in order and do the things that we need to do that so often we neglect to do. that part of the statement i would agree with. troubles me that people make such a big deal about extreme statements like that. particularly when it comes from conservative figures. i have heard many from the left that do not get that much attention. i bristle at that. those are personal opinions that have been stated.

janice dean is watching this from the fox weather center. florida in its path, jd? >> reporter: maybe, we have to watch epl leave. it's such a pretty name it's hard to imagine the storm becoming a monster. the center circulation is kind of away from the showers and thunderstorms that we are seeing here on the satellite's imaginary. because they are not located together that center -- the center of the storm, rather, and the tropical storm activity, in terms of showers and thunderstorms, that means the storm is not really getting its act together, and that could mean some good news. we don't want to see this thing become a major hurricane, right -rgs within the next several days. however it does mean that the island of hispaniola, which is dominican republic and haiti could see several inches of rain up to a foot or more and that is not good news unfortunately for them. let's take a look at some of the computer models that make up the cone of uncertainty that we look at in terms of where the storm is going to move. we are starting to get a better idea of where the st

janice, thank you. emily is headed for earthquake-ravaged haiti where it's threatening to drop nearly two feet of rain, and steve harrigan is streaming life from haiti. >> reporter: shannon, still some blue in the sky here in port-au-prince, but those darker clouds are moving in. the real question is will these tents where more than 600,000 haitians still live since the earthquake 18 months ago, will they be able to stand up to tropical force winds and torrential rainses? if you take a look, most of them are basically tarp, pieces of wood or tin put together. so it's a question will they stand up to the wind, but also the rain. we could get several feet of flooding in some areas, and one real danger is going to be flash floods as well as mudslides. this is about the only preparation we've seen so far, the government putting up a piece of tape which no one's paying attention to. the canal really could just slide, and many of these tents in this tent city could slide off right with it. the real concern is

meteorologist janice dean is live at the fox weather center. what is a gustnado? >> reporter: the definition is a low level rotating cloud that forms along the gust front or outflow of a thunderstorm, or the cold front. there is the video there, megyn. i guess a couple of meteorologists, you can see that swirl in the video, they are looking at that rotating swirl whipping around the dust and maybe some flags before the stage collapsed, and their thinking is yeah it could be this phenomenon called a gustnado, which is a vortex that forms along the front of a thunderstorm. i have to mention as well that some of the nooah meteorologists are disputing this. they think it was just a severe thunderstorm, straight-line winds that caused the collapse of the stage. i don't really know if we're going to find out what indeed caused the stage collapse. i guess we can all agree that it was weather related. a gustnado is a typically short-lived, lasts a few seconds to a few minutes, it's not a tornado even though it's called a gustnado. they might think the is related to a torn
