every time you look at these images, janice and gosh knows how many times we have, you always wonder the count wasn't higher. everyone counts their lucky stars that the count wasn't higher but the fact is it could have been much higher. >> it really could have. had we seen an ef-5 like we saw in moore move over oklahoma city it would have been devastating. we were possibly seeing an ef-3, ef-4 that moved through this area. with all those folks on the highways at the time. i want to show you the satellite about 24 hours ago. really these storms just erupted within a matter of hours. you can see this is the satellite imagery. there is oklahoma city, just some scattered clouds here. as we get into the 5:00 p.m. hour there is the dry line. that's the trigger that triggered some of these explosive storms and we likened this to a pot of boiling water that has the lid on it. the lid just flew off and the steam just came arising from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. really within a matter of hours, explosive storms not only in the oklahoma area but all the way up to missouri and illinois where we have

janice?ado warnings from south carolina up to maine in the last couple of hours since the front continues to move east, the same front that brought the deadly destructive weather across the plains and the midwest. the thunderstorm watch for parts of the northeast and new england and we are seeing several thunderstorm warnings. we could see the potential for rotation. we had a tornado expire in somerset county, maine, so if you live if this area, stay alert. temperatures behind the front are really cooler-than-average temperatures and ahead of it we have the warm air mass that is one of the main ingredients we need for the severe weather which will continue in the northeast and for parts of the southwest, as well. millions of people live here across the northeast so this is going to be a concern through the evening and into the overnight, and into tomorrow, as well, for the rush hour, looking at front which is on the move and by midday it should be out of there but if i could point your attent

our meteorologist, janice dean, is in the weather center. janice? with the storm systems that come out of the west, out of the rock rockies and the east coast and this is in exception much the potential for gusts will continue as the storm moves east and associated cold prompt is going to bring the potential for heavy rainfall, as well. look at the mess of showers and thunderstorms across the eastern half of the country, near thunderstorm watches in effect for all of this area in the yellow box until 9:00 p.m. local time and we have severe thunderstorm warnings dotted all around the area so certainly keep an eye to the sky and an ear to color local forecast watching the radar over the next 12 to 24 hours, this moisture is going to move eastward and it will be mainly a northeast threat as we get into tomorrow's drive in, toward the mid-day and look at the rainfall we will see on saturated ground. some of the areas already are seeing flooding so this is just going to add more insult to injury unfortunately across the eastern part of the country. the d

we have janice dean in our extreme weather center. and standing by in oklahoma city. first, let's get a sense of how bad the damage is at this hour. officials are preparing to survey the aftermath. oklahoma governor, mary fallon is joining us by phone. thank you, governor. let's talk about the fact it seems hard to believe even unimaginable you are dealing with the aftermath of this powerful twister just 11 days after the twister that hit northern oklahoma. as i understand it we're talking about a series of twisters that ripped through your state last night. what can you tell us about your damage? >> caller: it's been a hard night and day yesterday. it is hard to believe we would experience another storm especially so soon after what we've been going through with cleanup damage and the recent damage. right now, we're assessing the storm damage. we think we've had about three tornadoes that came through three different paths, in and out of clouds, we had a lot of heavy amounts of wind and rain and hail damage. we're looking at the various communities. there were many.

janice dean in fox extreme weather center., how is it looking for the heartland. >> unfortunately, shepard, we have the threat for strong severe storms. i don't think we will see violent tornadoes this evening it will add insult to injury. severe thunderstorm is in effect for colorado in ugh texas and in towards oklahoma. we have the severe thunderstorm warning in southeastern coado. i don't think we will see a lot of the tornado warnings. we could see iso warnings, certainly some hail and damaging winds. there is your threat this evening, including el reno, oklahoma city, and parts of moore, of course, devastated by ef-5 tornado in just two weeks. watching the satellite and radar imagery over the next 12 to 24 hours erupting overnight tonight and into tomorrow, shepard, again not looking for a large toado threat but certainly not good news for this area. and, we are watching the tropics. this could be our first named storm andrea. we will continue to monitor it for you. >> shepard: it will be late in florida. thanks. blade ru

having grown up in oklahoma and watched -- the way janice just described the way the dry line forms and those storms pop up, i don't think most people outside tornado alley realize those thunder heads pop up to 55, 65, 70,000 feet. anywhere along that dry line is where those tornadoes can spawn. any number of them can spawn at any time, which i get that people are -- it's rush hour. they're trying to go home. they're caught in the middle of it. if you're already home or you're already at work, those pop up so quickly that, again, the instinct is to run. what you should do is to figure out what's the closest shelter in place? that literally might be your bath tub with a mattress or pillow over your head to protect yourself from flying debris. that simple. >> we have a lot more severe storms -- not a lot more storms but more severe storms including the hurricane warnings. is fema in over its head? >> i don't think that fema is in over its head. i think the country has too high of expectations. we have a population of more than 200 million, 300 million people and there's a limited number o

meteorologist janice dean is live in extreme weather center with more. dry thunderstorms?yeah, what that means it is so dry across this area that any moisture doesn't hit the ground. it evaporates before it hits the ground and you are left with what they call dry lightning and gusty winds. not helping at all in terms of moisture and if we get those dry thunderstorms it could spark more wildfire danger. look at the explosion of wildfire activity we have across the west. over a dozen wildfires burning in six different states. of course, we are very focused on colorado springs, that area where they had seen their biggest wildfire in history. we are starting to see some shower activity moving in. as we mentioned we're into a drought so all that moisture could evaporate and just left with those gusty winds and perhaps lightning that could spark more wild danger. cooler temperatures, we'll get a little bit of moisture in the atmosphere but the dry lightning has led to the potential for red flag warnings as well as high fire danger across this region, not only today but tomorrow
