janice, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, marlie. too little is known right now to determine what caused this crash, but boeing facing some very hard questions today after the second crash in just six months of this new type of aircraft, the boeing 737 max 8. in the case of the ethiopian airlines flight, we know that it had trouble shortly after take off. its vertical speed was apparently unstable. the pilot radioed to return, but then communication was lost and the plane crashed just six minutes after take off, killing 157 people. the u.s. national transportation safety board as well as a team from boeing are part of the investigation, and it's likely to focus on an automated system designed to keep the aircraft from stalling. this was a new feature of the 737 max, but it was one that pilots apparently struggled with. that was learned as part of the investigation into the crash of a lion air flight in indonesia last october. >>> now, it isn't clear whether that anti-stalling system is a factor here, but china is not waiting for answ

tracee: janice dean is here with the latest.mb, that's what's happening. we have several storms across the northeast. here's our first one p, a short-lived storm moving across the northeast. then we have the next one that comes tonight into tomorrow, into saturday. then our third system will arrive sunday into monday. that's the one that could bring more impressive snow totals. so i urge you if you live across the northeast, you need to listen to your low l call forecast. -- local forecast. it could cause problems on the commute monday morning. we get a second batch tonight and a third batch on sunday into monday. we could see measurable snow here. that's the bottom line. the other big story is the west coast. they've been inundated with heavy rain and snow, this weekends being no exception, especially across california, perhaps several inches of rain and feet of snow. in some cases, we wiped out the drought across portions of california. that's the good news. but the flooding is going to be a concern and of course travel concer

janice, good morning.ally arrives next week. we have to get through the winter side of this first. yes, blizzard conditions across the rockies and the northern plains, shaded in red here, winds will be 50, 60, 70 miles per hour. ahead of this we've got flood warnings in effect and back of this, a lot of winter storm warnings as far south as the desert southwest. you can he see the future radar, there's the blizzard side of this and the warmer side will bring the potential for severe storms including tornadoes. we had tornadoes yesterday, another round potentially today into the afternoon and into this evening. so the mississippi river valley, tennessee river valley, that's the area we could see those severe storms and then the winds, i mean, we could get wind gusts in excess of 60 miles per hour across the plains states, so that will be a big headline with this storm system. we'll certainly keep you up-to-date. folks need to pay close attention to your local forecast. we'll keep you up-to-date from the fox

janice: good morning, tracee and cheryl.devastating tornadoes last night across the southeast. parts of alabama and georgia total destruction in some of these areas and of course we had a great loss of life as well. so this is going to be a big story. the warmer part of the storm brought the severe storms and this is the area where we typically see tornadoes in march. so the problem is, unfortunately, we lost some lives. that's the devastating part. the colder side of the storm, the area of low pressure brought the snow across the northeast, several inches especially in interior sections of the northeast. we're getting a bit of light snow in new york city. but most of it is now into new england. it will exit the coastline later this morning, into this afternoon. the problem, though, is that the temperatures are going to be very cold over the next several days, so anything on the ground is going to freeze and that's going to cause problems on the roads, on the highways, on the tree limbs, that kind of thing, so people need to

janice has a check of the weather.art to tornado season. >> reporter: the worst tornado outbreak in oklahoma. we are off to a busy start and a deadly one and our hearts and prayers go to alabama and florida, all the areas that were hard hit. i want to talk about the fact that it is cold behind that system. feel like 25 in mobile, 17 in memphis, 5 in tulsa, 12 in new york city. we have freeze warnings in effect from texas to the florida panhandle. that is where temperatures are freezing and that will remain in place for the next couple of days, way below average. we will set some record lows across much of the country over the next 24 to 48 hours, sadly the misery shows a quieter pattern, a little cold front moving through over the last 12 to 24 hours but it will be dry. we will watch potential for another storm system across the south this weekend. there is your satellite radar image. the next storm system moving to the west bringing more rain and mountain snow. i'm very nervous today, nervous butterflies. >> i have be
