janine de la vega is there at the scene where that man was pronounced dead at the scene, janine de la vega has more. >> reporter: we are here at the shopping plaza on snell avenue where police have set up crime tape and it is completely blocked off. you can see there is the crime investigation unit and that's because homicide detectives have been called to the scene and a lot of the focus has been put on this area and we have seen investigators using their flashlights and also taking a lot of pict and gathering evidence. police received a 911 calm and they spotted a man lying on the ground and it appeared he was brutally attacked beaten up and he was unshun shows at the -- unconscious at the time but paramedics tried to see if they could help him but it was already too late. police tell us it appears he was attacked with a machete and they have recovered that weapon and they are looking for any other clues they may have found. they say this happened in the very early morning hours as soon as we get in information, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 morning news. >>> police are also ins

janine. >> reporter: that is right. we are being told he was the driver of the car. 16 years old and that car a white nissan is parked here on stevens road. you can see police have this whole area stayed off if. there is many bullet casings on the ground. we are told this car is completely shot up. for more information on exactly what happened we're joined by one of the detectives here angel sanchez from the east palo alto police department. what appears to have happened? >> they were either picking up a friend. the car was packed. it was still running. two individuals approached them and just fired into the vehicle. multiple shots were fire into their car. the driver was struck multiple times. and he was found deceased at the scene. the other two passengers at the backseat managed to escape from the vehicle although they did sustain gunshot wounds. their injuries are nonlife threatening. >> were any words exchanged between the group? or does this appear to be gang related? >> it's hard to tell if this is gang related.

janine de la vega is live on the scene and joins us with more on the investigation, good morning, janine. >>reporter: good morning, torii and i was just told by the police lieutenant this turned out to be the third homicide and this one is roped off because the body of a man is on the ground. he is laying behind an electrical box and it is unknown at this point how he died but we do know shots were fired. it is near an elementary school but obviously they will be detoured around this. police received a call that gunshots were fired in east san jose and officers arrived and found what appeared to be a latino man 19 and 20 years old. his face was down anficers immediately roped off this area to look for witnesses. >> we are looking for witnesses, looking for any evidence we can find and we have a homicide unit in route and they will take over the scene once they get here. >> reporter: at this point we don't have any information on the suspects right now again, police are interviewing neighbors to find out if somebody was in a car, if a car sped away if somebody was on foot, if there were s

good afternoon, janine. >> reporter: good afternoon, tori. rehashing the event of february 26th was not easy for the police and sheriff. they wanted to reveal what they learned in their investigation. there was an incredible amount of gunfire exchanged between the gunmen and police officers and it was determined officers were justified in shooting and killing him. the santa cruz police chief, the sheriff and the district attorney broke down the events of the day that baker and elizabeth butler were shot to death by jeremy goulet. they had been interviewing him as part of the sexual assault investigation. when they told him he was under arrest and he agreed to come outside of his home and he ambushed his officers. authorities say he fired a totele a of nine rounds shooting butler first and then baker, killing them. there were three police officers and one off--duty sheriff a's -- off-duty sheriff's deputy when he was cornered in -- in an alley. >> goulet was shooting 15 rounds at the officers and then the officers returned some the same amount

. -- yesterday afternoon, janine de la vega joins us from outside of the school, here is more. >> reporter: you can see people have left candles and flours and -- flowers and teddy bears. this little girl attended park view elementary right across the street, but what is unclear, we are told brief counselors will be at both places today. she was hit by the suv around 3:30 yesterday afternoon. she was walking with her aunt and 2-year-old sister to pick up her older sister. the driver did stop and is cooperating if but it does appear that they are angry, because they told us crossing guard are needed here. >> nothing was done and it was just dismissed out of hand and this is what happened and it could have been prevented much less expensively because you can't put a cost on life. >> the speed on this area is 25 miles per hour but it's not clear how fast that driver was traveling and many are being treated at the hospital and police say this is still under investigation. as of now we are not sure and we have been told by the district attorney's office about the precautions they will be taking

what just happened janine? >> reporter: we are hearing at 4:00 a.m. we are told by a nursing supervisor here that a van actually crashed into a window near the main lobby entrance. now there is a lot of construction going on around here. so we're at least a block away from where this happened. so let's go to video of what we could shoot. at the entrance there was completely shattered glass. the van has already been towed. again the nursing supervisor said that the driver of that van was driving very erratically and somehow crashed into the window. into a planter. we are also told apparently there was a janitor cleaning at that time. he had minor injuries. a deputy a sheriffs deputy happened to be on the scene. he heard the crash, he came and responded. he detained the driver. we are told the driver of that van is now being treated in the emergency room. we are told he is stable. we don't know much more though about his condition. but the nursing supervisor did tell us that it's fortunate that nobody else was injured. i took some still pictures that yo

ktvu's janine de la vega joins us live from the police department with details about how one officer figured out where to looking for the suspect and what -- where to looking for the suspect and what makes this case unusual. good afternoon, janine. >> reporter: police say it's rare to have a fee armed robbery suspect and this woman used a particular type of fun in her crimes. authorities say that's what helped them capture her. it was a frightening morning for this 7-eleven clerk. at 2:00 a.m., he says a woman walked in at his store on foxworthy and held him at gunpoint. >> i'm scared. had a gun. a hun to my head. i'm -- a gun to my head. >> reporter: what did you do? give them lottery tickets and money? >> yes. >> reporter: after police reviewed the video, officers recognized the woman as the same suspect who robbed two 7- elevens last month. on a hunch, the officer went to the location where the same suspect dumped a stolen vehicle. >> sure enough, the suspect vehicle rolls through. he makes spin ual contact with the person. realizes it matches the description of tonight's armed ro

good afternoon, janine. >> reporter: good afternoon, tori. yes, that's right.ont of the all- american cannabis club that's been operating for the past three years. now, they are fighting paying the tax. but other collectives have to fork over more. currently the city considers medical marijuana dispensaries businesses and are required to pay a 7% tax on gross receipts. that was approved by voters in 2010 but the council just approved raising the amount to 10%. marijuana collectives are legal under the state law but illegal under federal law. san jose is in a gray zone, meaning it does not have an ordinance in place to govern dispensaries but it's still requiring them to pay a business tax. the operator of this club is filing a lawsuit, working against the city, challenging this tax. >> it's really good that they have raised it up. i think that will be a great thing to help san jose raise some more revenue. but what they need to do is pu legal for us to pay it. that's our concern with it. >> reporter: there are approximately 100 can nimbus clubs operating in --

janine de la vega is in dora parkings the arrests were made just a short time ago, is that right, janine de la vega? >> reporter: yes, the suspect had been hiding here for three hours and police had this neighborhood surrounded and now that suspect is being booked into jail. the suspect was attending a birthday party at the home of cutter -- custer drive. the man celebrating his birthday was stabbed several times. officers said they received information that the suspect was hiding in dora park. the park is very large and they were having trouble located him and i told the lieutenant there was a dated community and there were areas i thought he might be. that information was indicated to officers. >> they picked him up by the pool and tennis courts at which point, we knew something was up being, but nothing was coming to fruition, so after talking to you, we went back to the pool area and we went back to the pool area and found him there. >> reporter: he surrendered immediately and most likely will be booked with assault of a deadly weapon. -- weapon. the suspect and the victim knew each

janine de la vega is live at a 7-eleven store on foxworthy avenue. janine, you talked to an employee who was robbed? >> reporter: take, did. and that 7--- dave, i did. and that clerk said a woman caulked in and threatened to kill him if he didn't give her cash and scratchoff tickets. he handed it over. police came, reviewed the video and recognized the woman. police ended up arresting her and a pregnant woman and they have them in -- and a man and they have them in custody. police say they led them on a chase that reached 80 miles an hour. the stolen bmw they were in crashed into a tree and a wall. officers say they recognized the woman as the same suspect who robbed two 7-elevens in east april. officers went and found her and the pursuit began. the 7-eleven clerk describes what he did. >> i'm scared. had a fun. a gun to my head. i'm scared. >> reporter: what did you do? >> you gave them lottery tickets and money? >> yeah. >> reporter: police have identified the robber suspect as 22-year-old sharon gonzalez. a 22-year-old woman and a 25- year-old man

janine. >> reporter: we are here on sames drive. can see that there is a big fire response here with engines as well as ambulances and there is actually at least 100 people waiting out here. they are in their pajamas they are huddled in blankets. apparently a fire broke out in the under ground parking garage. you can see there, there is firefighters coming out. for more information we will be talking to rob brown. can you tell me what appears to have happened here? >> it appears we had a car fire in the garage level. so we have several vehicles that were damaged by fire. a few more that have had heat damage. a lot of smoke production. so when we got here we had a lot of the occupants trying to get their cars out of the building. we were able to get the fire under control relatively quickly. we did have two residents that suffered minor smoke inhalation. >> reporter: and i see kind of right behind you in the distance firefighters are coffering it -- covering it right now but there appears to be a car it was a kia and melted. >> that

so what's happening out there now, janine? the last hour, a man and a woman pulled you in a car and they wanted to take a look at the spot where a young man in his 20s had died. they wanted to know if there was their friend but their man's identity has not been released yet. this happened at 10:15 last night on heys avenue, a block away from oakgrove high school. neighborhoods heard yelling and several gunshots. officers arrived and found a man either 20 to 25 years ole suffering from at least one gunshot wound. one neighbor ran outside before police got to the scene. he told us the victim was black and the victim told him right before he died that he had a daughter. that neighbor said it was traumatic to see him die and he witnessed his death. he wishes he could have helped save him. >> was looking for a gunman. i didn't see any. so i knew there was a victim because i seen someone run over there with a phone. i ran over to the guy and i asked hill, i was like, do you believe in god? he said yes, i told him to keep breathing.

janine de la vega is there and janine you just spoke with the victim's father. >> reporter: yes, he is completely devastated. still in shock that his 16-year- old son is gone. he heard the gunfire. he was inside the house and rap outside. this is the car he was sitting in. this is a car in the driveway. the car was parked out on the street. his father has identified him as 16-year-old jose a junior at wood side high school in redwood city. this shooting happened just before 11:00 last night. police say their shot spotter was activated when they arrived. they found the driver of that white nissan dead. he was shot multiple times. his two friends were 15 and 16 years old. they were passengers. they ran into the home. they are suffering from gunshot wounds. they are expected to survive. they told detectives that they dropped off a friend at the house on fretum street. they were waiting for him to come back out when two men approached their car and started opening fire. here is what detective sergeant told us about the suspects. >> possibly two hispanic males were last seen running down th

janine de la vega is there with what police are saying and it appears the man may have been assaulted, janine de la vega has more. >> reporter: detectives are here at the shopping plaza here and the corner of snell and detectives have been focused on an area behind a jack in the box area and there are police cars around here and there is a crime investigation unit and they have been taking their pictures and using their flashlights for any sort of evidence. what we know is somebody passing by called 911 after spotting a man who was severely beaten in the 400 block of block and hill. police sources are telling me it appears this man was beaten with a machete and they have recovered one of the weapons and they don't know if there are more weapons that were used in this crime but when fire and paramedics arrived they ended up declaring this man dead. again homicide is on the scene and they are investigating at this point and they are having trouble getting any sort of surveillance video because a lot of these businesses are closed and there does not appear to be any witnesses around and

janine de la vega is in san jose to show us this problem.amazing how quickly that went back up. >> reporter: yeah, it is. drivers had complained about what this is train trestle looked like above highway 101 for months and months. you know it was covered from end to end with graffiti and this fresh paint up there looks nice but as you can see there is also fresh graffiti there. let's show you what it looked like earlier this week. the city, cal trans, and union pacific railroad teamed up to clean up this bridge. it took a year to coordinate. technically it isn't the city's responsibility because it's union pacific's property. cal trans actually shut down several lanes of 101 over night for several days to have the graffiti painted over. homeless people say they see taggers risk their lives and climb over barricades to tag. union pacific railroad says fines can go up to $300 fortress passing on their property. apparently that wasn't a deterrent. neither were the gates they put up. union pacific responded to me this morning when i contacted th

janine? >> reporter: yeah, dave.'t know if the driver was under the influence or what caused him to crash into the lobby here at valley medical center. we're still waiting to hear from the california highway patrol on that. we're about a block away because of all of the construction going on. we were able to get a picture of the damage. we just got the pictures of this minivan that crashed into the lobby of valley medical center. authorities say the driver was traveling erratically in the parking lot and for some unknown reasons just plowed into the window near the front entrance. the driver was taken to the emergency room and his van was then towed away and the chp was -- is investigating. the van actually traveled so far into the lobby that it hit a wall near the admitting area. >> the people in admitting were scared. no injuries. thank goodness because of the time of day, and no staff, no patients were anywhere near. >> reporter: how fortunate is that? >> it certainly is a blessing. >> reporter: crews have been in

as janine de la vega reports, the incident has prompted hospital officials to rethink safety measures. >> this picture was snapped soon after this minivan came barreling into the lobby of the slay valley medical center. the van crashed through a plate glass window and hit the wall in the admitting area. debris went everywhere. >> it was quite shocking to see a minivan in the lobby. our main concern was the safety for the staff and any incoming patients. >> reporter: the van didn't hit anyone but glass and debris hit a man. he had minor cuts. the driver was taken to the emergency room. his van was towed as the chp investigated the incident. they interviewed the driver not hurt. >> during the interview process something didn't look correct. so they performed field sobriety tests on him and did determine he was under the influence. >> reporter: police arrested this 33-year-old man. they say he was driving under the influence and with a suspended license. these barriers were put in front. hospital to protect pedestrians walking inside. this is exactly where the minivan came crashing throu

janine? >> reporter: dave, the driver of one of the cars was just released from the hospital and booked into jail for driving under the influence. now, the driver of the other car actually smashed into that street light traffic pole that you see there. this is at the corner of aborn and ruby. she's still at the hospital being treated for a broken leg. you can see the force of the impact over herethe's still a gash right here and there's still a lot of broken glass and debris here on the ground. now, at 2:00 a.m., police say that black suv was traveling southbound on ruby when it broadsided a dodge stratus going eastbound on aborn. the suv crashed into a pole. the 22-year-old female driver was trapped in the car and had to be extricated by firefighters, which took about an hour. police smelled alcohol on her break and anticipate she will be arrested for dui. the driver of the other car failed a field sobriety test was and treated for minor injuries. >> whether one missed the light or had diffi

ktvu's janine de la vega in palo alto with more. >> reporter: good afternoon. the da's office is weighing whether to file charges against the father. he was driving here along highway 101 with his family in the car when he -- when authorities say he fell asleep and they are trying to determine whether or not losing both of his daughters is punishment enough. this accident happened near the oregon expressway exit last november on black friday. the california highway patrol is recommending that 48-year-old arvin tankell face vehicular manslaughter charges. they say he was driving home from an early morning shopping trip when he crashed his suv after veering off the road. his two daughters who weren't wearing seat belts were ejected and died from their injuries. the da says they need more time to evaluate and in cases like this they need to be sensitive and consider if the loss is punishment enough. >> due to the fact you normally get seven to eight hours of sleep in the evening prior, he only had three hours of sleep within a 24-hour period and he knew he was fat

ktvu sea janine de la vega has been on the story since the fire start -- ktvu's janine de la vega has been on this sawyer since the fire started five years ago -- story since the fire started five years ago. what do you know? >> reporter: firefighters are back in the back of the building making sure things are okay, nothing will spark back up. the building is boarded you. the fire ravaged this building which sauced a salon and a personal car shopping business. now, here are some pictures that were tweeted by the san jose fire department showing the flames consuming the building. this happened at 2:00 a.m. near highway 85 and deanza boulevard at the silk day spa and salon and at advanced results. that's the personal car shopping business. firefighters had to attack the fire from the outside because the salon was fully engulfed. it was too unsafe for firefighters to enter. it took them about an hour to knock it down. >> fire was coming out of every window. there was a hazard initially because of fear of collapse. we did a complete suite of the roof. the roof did collapse during the fire
