janine de la vega has just arrived on the scene in sunnyvale. janine? >> reporter: we're here on southbound lanes of 85. it's a mess out here. you can see this southbound traffic here is completely backed up for miles. they are going at a slow pace. i want to show you what the chp is doing here in sunnyvale. what they are doing is actually turning the cars around in the opposite direction. this is the homestead exit. they shouldn't be going this way because this is the wrong direction. they are sending them back up cloever leaf to get -- cloverleaf to get them on the freeway. this is the power line that's down. this is a view from our chopper, where you can see this traffic nightmare here in the middle of the morning commute. northbound 85 is completely shut down. so is southbound 85 as i just showed you this traffic diversion. this is all due to a fire that occurred in the area. we hear that a power pole caught fire. i'm not sure if you can see that from your shot. my cameraman here on the ground, we can actually see it from where we're standing. you c

janine de la vega is live from san jose with the story. janine? >> reporter: mike, the dispatch center handles 911 calls for unincorp rampted san jose and other -- unincorporated san jose and other parts of the county. so making sure power doesn't go down is critical because all of those people adds up to 250,000 people that they serve. that's why they have crews inside trying to pinpoint a cause. the building lost partial power at 10:30 last night which took down the 911 phone system, radio system and their computer- aided dispatch which allows them to enter and track calls. they immediately switched to the contingency plan, rerouting all calls to the city of san jose san jose. crews were from emergency services stood by in the parking lot and responded to calls by radio. the power was prostored by midnight -- restored by midnight and the director said they handled about ten of their calls during the period and did their best to respond promptly and didn't have any complaints during the power failure. >> we practice quite a bit. when we bring sys

janine? >> reporter: yes.still have cesar chavez roped off with crime tape because investigators are picking up evidence. they are not sure if this is all connected to the stabbing. they are hoping to will lead to the victim's killers. someone called to report a group of five or six people around 2:15 a.m. was attacking a man. police arrived on scene and found the victim suffering from at least one stab wound. crews rushed him to the hospital e. he was know -- pronounced dead shortly after. police will be looking to see if surveillance cameras captured anything. they did find a black backpack found lying in the middle of market street. it's unknown if it belongs to the victim but it was taken as evidence. this is the second homicide. but the two are unrelated. >> we're always concerned about violence in the city. no reason to believe they are connected. the other homicide occurred in east san jose. this one in downtown san jose. right now, again, we're gonna go ahead and take these incidents as they come and h

janine de la vega is live. we understand one of them was kidnapped for a short time. >> reporter: yes, that is correct. both of these robbery os curred at night and within an hour of each other. the latest happened just off of may avenue. police are looking to catch the thieves. wondering if they all strike again. in the first incident monday night, the employee made a pizza delivery on remington avenue just after 9:00 p.m. when two suspects doctored entered the vehicle. police are considering it a kidnapping. saying the thieves stole cash and a pope. and then just an hour later a suspect tried to force another pizza delivery man out of his car. the victim ran away and the thief tried to steal his car. the delivery man was also unininjured. there are signs saying delivery people only carry $20 in cash on them. but in these incidents it didn't stop the police. we are still waiting to hear back. janine de la vega ktvu channel 2 news. >>> later today barbecues and open flames they will officially be banns at san h

janine de la vega is live in sunnyvale right now.t interviewed a customer who came to the rescue of one of the victims. >> reporter: yeah, they were completely taken by surprise. the pizza deliver yayman just finished delivering a pizza to the home down the street when he got robbed. he ran back to the customer's home asking for help. earlier monday night at 9:00 p.m., police say a pizza deliveryman was approached by two suspects after he dropped off a pizza on remington avenue. police consider this a kidnapping because they got into the victim's vehicle and forced him to drive to another vehicle. the thieves stole cash and a phone. but the deliveryman was uninjured. an hour later, a different employee from the same domino's made a delivery on north bayview, the one i was talking about, when a suspect tried to force him out of his car. officers say the victim ran away to the customer's home. he knocked on the door in shock. >> he came back and there was like a knock and it took us a few seconds to get up and so when we came to the do

good morning, janine. >> reporter: good morning, tori.st spoke to a patient leaving the hospital on mowry. she said she was not told by staff about the security threat. she found out by watching our newscast in her hospital room. the security notice, this was just e-mailed to all of the hospital staff, making them aware that components of an explosive device were found here. now, there is heightened security at the hospital and according to the notice, it states there have been recent security-related incidents, which included the discovery of the component of a bomb found at the main hospital. local law enforcement and the fbi examined the parts and determined it to be the makings of an explosive device. the notice says effective immediately, washington hospital is on high security alert which means anyone entering a hospital building is subject to increased security screenings, including the inspection of personal belongings. >> it was a little scary. they came out and told us everything was fine, that we were safe and not to worry. >>
