janine, how does it look right now? >> reporter: all lanes of southbound 880 are now open but the chp still has a lot to investigate. a woman was traveling the wrong direction here on 880 for three miles before she crashed and her car burst into flames. offices were called at around 12:30 a.m. after getting reports that a sedan had entered the southbound lanes of 880. but it was heading northbound just before thornton avenue it collided head on with a pickup truck carrying three men. the chp says the impact was so powerful that it tore the truck in two. the sedan caught fire. the female driver died. the three men in the truck were all rushed to the hospital with serious and possible life threatening injuries. officers have not released any names of the victims. there is still a lot of investigating that needs to be done. how fast were the vehicles travel something why was the woman traveling in the wrong direction? and was alcohol a factor? just a very tragic accident with deadly results. back to you. >> thank you janin

janine de la vega is joining us live now. you're in menlo park. what is that warning janine? >> reporter: well, first off let me tell you cal train just passed by here. so the schedule is back to normal here. i do want to show you the repair crews that are here because again this was badly damaged in the accident late yesterday afternoon. cal train says the woman most likely had cars in front of her and she got stuck at the tracks here. cal train officials say oftentimes traffic gets back up at the location all across the railroad tracks and drivers stop on the tracks. they say this happened just before 5:00 p.m.. a southbound train coming from san mateo hit the woman's suv sending it 40 feet through the intersection. the suv was totaled and the woman was rushed to sanford hospital. she died of her injuries. >> our heart goes out to the family, of course. this is a tragedy. we just want to remind people, don't stop on the tracks. people have to understand that it's not safe to do that. even with all the safety devices we have in place. and don't go across the tracks until you

janine davidson, up until now now how effective has this coalition been against the islamic state?think it depends how you define being effective and it depends how you define progress in this entire thing. i think there's no doubt this is an unprecedented coalition, to be able to pull together the types of countries across this region to focus-- i mean, on the very first night of air strikes to have mathat many countries participating. i think that's kind of amazing. that's on a military perspective. but at the end of the day this isn't going to be fully military solution. that said, i think there is no doubt that we have sort of pushed back the advance of isis. you don't see them with a lightning speed they were taking over territory last year. they've stopped. and i think what they've done is they've taken control of places like raqqa in syria and mosul in iraq, and that's the greater military challenge. >> woodruff: derek harvey how do you size up the progress or not this coalition has made so far? >> i think we've made limited and halting progress. most of the progress has bee

ktvu fox 2 news' janine de la vega has the story. >> reporter: his name is phillip watkins and she watched as he was shot on sherman street. >> he was disstressed. something i had never seen before. i didn't think things would get to this point. he was upset. he felt things weren't going right. >> reporter: buchanon called the suicide help line worried about her future son-in-law. then, there was a 911 call saying someone was locked inside an upstairs bedroom. it was watkins who called 911 and it was his way of calling for help. the radio captured tense moments when they arrived. >> male walking towards us. >> reporter: they ordered him to drop the weapon, so he fired. >> shots fired! >> they shot him. and i begged the policemen not to shoot him. that he needed help. they could have tazed him. >> reporter: watkins was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. a police spokesperson says the officers were in fear for their life and they are trained to stop a threat. watkins was 23 years old, attended san jose high school and deanza college where he played football. he was engaged t

back to you. >> thank you, janine. >>> 8:04. we now know more about how the man arrested and then released in san francisco's body parts case died over the weekend. police source tells ktvu 54- year-old mark andrus died saturday of gastrointestinal bleeding and shock at a local hospital. andrus was arrested january 30th after the discovery of a suitcase containing body parts but he was released due to a lack of evidence. the body still has not been identified. our police source says investigators do not believe andrus acted alone. former san francisco police chief says with a key person of interest dead, investigators will now have to rely on forensic work and interviews to close the case. >> retracing activities talking to people trying to trace the path that leads to the murder of the individual. >> a police source says andrus was a heroin addict and his bodies showed the effects of a hard drive. we spoke to andrus's brother. he said he had not been in touch with him since his release from jail last week but said he was a good

ktvu fox 2 janine de la vega is there. and what it means for the case. janine. >> the timing of this suspects death is strange. there is no official word on how he died. and now with the suspect gone, it will make things more difficult. we have learned the suspect checked himself into a local hospital on saturday and died that night. his death comes just over a week after he was arrested. the district attorney did not prosecute andres saying there was no enough evidence. they spoke briefly but not about the case. >> he seemed he was in jail for a couple of days. and he took off. >> reporter: police continue to work on gathering evidence to push the investigation forward. legal analysts say even though there are still a lot that needs to be answered, is there a second suspect in this case? did police arrest the wrong person? who was the person in that suitcase? there is still forensic work to be done. pam, back to you. >> all right the investigation will certainly continue. thank you. >>> 5:37 is the time. one of two men arrested in connection with a stre

ktvu's janine de la vega reports on what led up to the latest violence. >> reporter: drinking andhaingd hanging out with friends ended with gunfire. it started at 10:00 p.m. last night when an argument escalated and someone pulled out a gun. the owner called 911. >> couple people saw the guy -- [ indiscernible ] shoot and run. >> two men were wounded and taken to the hospital. >> one of the victims was in critical condition. he has been stabilized. we just keep monitoring the situation. the second victim is expected to survive. >> police roped off the area and detain witnesses. police confirm they did arrest a man with assault with a deadly weapon but they are still looking for a second suspect. this is the 4th shooting that occurred at or near a vietnamese bar or restaurant. on saturday night a security guard was shot and killed trying to help stop a robbery suspect. and a few days before on the same street another man was killed in a shooting. on new year's day gunfire in the parking lot and a man was killed. >> something that is on our radar. as far as the police department is conce

janine de la vega is joining us live from sunnyvale with the latest on the investigation. >> reporter: police have cleared the scene here at wolf road and elle camino but they are keeping their eyes open for a white mercedes sedan. they made it stop at el camino at wolf when an officer exited his vehicle and approached the mercedes the suspect sped toward the officer and that is when the officer made the decision to fire his weapon. >> during the attempt to stop the vehicle, the vehicle drove toward the officer at a high rate of speed. officer fearing for his life fired several shots at the vehicle. the vehicle was last seen northbound on wolf road. the officer was not injured. >> the other officer in a marked patrol vehicle chased the mercedes on wolf road in the northbound direction but lost the vehicle. sunnyvale department of public safety is heading up this investigation. they are unsure how many were in the mercedes and working to see if they can provide us with a license plate number. it's unknown if anybody in that suspect vehicle was injured. the detectives are also looking t

janine de la vega is live in sunnyvale with reaction from pet owners and also purina. janine?rter: we've been talking to dog owners here at this park and hearing this, they say it's the last thing that they want to hear. they say it's disturbing. so far we haven't been able to find somebody who feeds their dog beneful try dog food yet out here. but on twitter, i've been looking at the tweets, we've got several tweeting saying they have used beneful and had issues with it. ♪ >> reporter: a class-action lawsuit which was filed in the u.s. district court in northern california states that the eight kind of ben nip full dog food have caused internal bleeding, liver failure, vomiting, diarrhea, seizures and kidney failure. the plaintiff is a dog owner from discovery bay. he says he started to buy the dog food in late december or early january and gave it to his dog. soon after, all three of his dogs became sick. his bulldog died. the lawsuit says documentens in the -- toxins are to blame. in the past four years there's been more than 3,000 online complaints of dogs becoming ill or

ktvu fox 2 janine de la vega is joining us live now. you're at a dog park in sunnyvale.out a claim of toxic ingredients. what did you find out? >> that spokesman from purina told me this lawsuit that is filed against the company is completely baseless. this involves the beneful dry dog food line. but there is a man that says beneful dry dog food is why his dog died. that dog owner is the plaintiff in a class action lawsuit that was filed in u.s. district court in northern california. it states that the eight kinds of beneful dog food has caused internal bleeding, liver failure, vomiting, diarrhea, and kidney failure. the dog owner says he started buying beneful in late december or early january this year and gave it to his dog. soon after he says all three of his dogs became sick and his bulldog died. the suit says that toxins in the dog food are to blame including propylene glycol. in the past four years there has been more than 3,000 online complaints with dogs becoming ill or dying after eating beneful. they say there is nothing wrong with beneful and millions of dogs

janine de la vega is joining us live now. you're along interstate 880 where some of the lanes were shut down. what is the situation out there now? >> reporter: all lanes of southbound 880 are open but earlier this was a devastating scene. [ inaudible ] officers were called in at 12:30 a.m.. and was heading northbound just before thornton avenue. it collided head on with a pickup truck carrying three men. the chp says the impact was so powerful that iter to the truck in two. the sedan burst into flames. a female driver died. the three in the truck were all rushed to the hospital with serious and possible life threatening injuries. officers have not released any names of the victims. there is still a lot of investigations. why was this woman traveling the wrong direction? and was alcohol a factor? this is a very tragic accident with deadly results. dave. >> thank you. we'll talk toulater on that situation out there. glad the traffic is back and moving again. thank you. >>> time 16:06. in other news people around the bay area fe
