janine?porter: claudine i spoke with a woman who lives across the street she told me she couldn't sleep last night because this fire really shook her up you can see it happened here in the back of the home you can see the fence there is all burnt and broken and the windows there had to be boarded up fire happened just before 7:30 at a home located in a neighborhood near mclaughlin and story road this happened last night firefighters say the man who lived there called it in to 911 telling them he was in the garage when he smelled smoke when he got out somebody was still left in the home he told that to firefighters, the flames were coming from one of the back bedrooms as firefighters knocked it down they did a search and found a body an arson investigator was called which is standard procedure they are still investigating the cause of the fire so at this point we don't know if it was caused by someone smoking or candles electrical or if there's any reason to mrefb this is -- believe this is su

ktvu fox 2 janine de la vega is joining us live now. you're in san jose. and what is happening. >> yeah. santa clara county had the largest increase compared to any other county in the state when it came to bing drinking and the fact we had the highest numbers and the numbers -- the university of washington cubbed this study over a ten year period. they define bing drinking for women as having four or more drinks ona single occasion. researchers found in santa clara county bing drinking increased almost 36%. among men it was 23%. those that work with substance abusers say it could be spurred by the influx of the young wealthy professionals coming into the silicon valley. >> we're working harder and longer hours. well we know what to decompress. alcohol. >> reporter: drug and alcohol therapists say they have seen 15-20% increase in clients in the past year. half are women and many work for tech companies. many hope californians can bring down the bing drinking. they hope the same energy could be put toward reducing bing drinking here. >> interesting. janine

janine de la vega is in san jose this morning with more on how this all started.ll us the suspect had just been brought in from mexico and was at a holding cell. he was handcuffed behind his back but somehow he managed to get the cuffs to the front of his body and escape. here's a picture of that suspect. you can see it looks like he was scraped up after trying to run away from custody. he was in the process of being booked from a murder of 2009. he was able to escape and run out of the building. chief larry was driving in through an electric gate when he saw arias sprinting. he jumped out of his car and chased him. he tried to tackle him once but he kept going on nearby streets. you can see from these pictures that esquivel's shirt was ripped and he got a cut. the police department will be looking into security measures and how he was able to get out of the holding facility which is supposed the to be secure. we will be reaching out to the chief to see if he will comment. >>> a shakeup in cal's football department after a recruiting coordinator and wide receivers

janine. >> reporter: he really has come very far.t was the san jose giants home opener which was exciting for fan but what made it even more special was that bryan stow got to throw out the first ceremonial pitch. it is a move he's been practicing for months. stow was welcomed by a cheering crowd as he made his way on to the field. his son and daughter were at his side. he spent the past several years to do rehab. he was severely beaten outside of dodgers stadium which caused brain damage. the giants promised stow's family that when he was ready, they wanted him to throw out the first pitch. earlier in the day ktvu visited stow at his home where he shared how he's been doing. >> a lot of people didn't think i would live past the first 24 hours. and to be here now is amazing. so is i just want people to know that it can happen. you can make whatever you want of yourself and make it work. >> reporter: stow has kept his sense of humor when he was asked what he has gained from the experience of his injury and recovery he says 100 pounds

ktvu fox 2 janine de la vega is live in palo alto.camera and now investigators want the public to help catch him janine. >> reporter: yeah dave. i did speak to a detective sergeant by phone a little while ago. they told me they had been receiving information from people but so far no solid leads yet. they want to catch this man that they say was praying on a 12-year-old girl here at the sanford shopping center. here are some surveillance aimenings of the man that they -- surveillance images of the man they are look for. he walked up to a 12-year-old girl and brushed up against him twice. the suspect followed her to another aisle and squeezed her butt with one hand. the little girl ever went to her mom and told her exactly what happened. but police could not find him. investigators are calling this latest incident sexual battery and are hoping that if you recognize him you will call police. and while there hasn't been another case of sexual battery that occurred here recently, police were dealing with a man they say was flashing shoppe

janine de la vega in palo alto explaining why experts say we're not prepared for a superstorm, janine we moved in the last couple of hours here to the baylands nature preserve. we wanted to give you a shot of the bay. as you can see there's also power lines close to the area. this report talks about infrastructure and low-lying areas would be at risk if this megastorm happens. the nonprofit, the bay area council says despite that california has experienced a drought, the weather here is volatile. experts say a superstorm is inevitable because one is predicted to happen every 150 years or so which falls into this time period. a map shows the threatened areas in red. the study showed 80% of flooding damage would occur in marin, san mateo and santa clara counties. the council released a video on youtube talking about the impact near the bay. >> we have a lot of businesses, a lot of buildings, we have our airports, we have waste water treatment facilities. highway, most of those are low lying and around the bray. we would be looked -- bay. we would be looking at prolonged transportation.

ktvu's janine is joining us live.t this maybe, janine. >> reporter: this product is really about home energy. tesla is expected to unveil a battery that you charge and then you use to power your home or a business. tesla's ceo tweeted this yesterday teasing people what its announcement would be. it says quote for the future to be good, we need electric transport and solar power and of course, he posted a picture of a white object entitled the missing piece. media outlets believe this is what the new battery is going to look like. that energy could be used instead of tapping into the power grid. other companies' launched the program for these batteries a couple of years ago. it is expected to be this new battery. so it is unclear if these batteries are revamped, we are supposed to be finding out at 8:00 tonight they're making the announcement at tesla's facility. >> do you have any idea how much this battery might cost? >> reporter: when tesla was doing this under solar city they reportedly offer those batteries for $1

ktvu fox 2's janine de la vega joining us live now. you are in san jose and you say investigators still aren't sure if there were two or three cars involved, janine. >> reporter: they are still trying to figure that out. two for sure now. it's opinion raining out here all morning. it stopped a little while ago. chp told me that when this accident happened on 101 and de la cruz it was dry at the time. they are still trying to figure out why the car was stopped in the fast lanes. this crash happened before 12:30 this morning. witnesses say a white pickup truck hit the white sedan which was stopped near the center median of northbound 101. imim-- the impact sent the traffic on the right shoulder. the driver was trapped inside and firefighters were unable to save that person. it's unknown if the deceased is a man or a woman. the chp said the driver of the pickup works for in hand out burger and was driving a company vehicle. he was uninjured and is cooperating with authorities. there's still a lot of questions that officers have. >> i don'

good morning, janine. >> reporter: good morning. i've talked with officers as they've been coming into work. they say they can't remember anyone ever escaping from the temporary holding facility here. that is supposed to be a locked, secure area. i've been told that it has a steel door. you need a key. it's unclear how the suspect got out. here is a picture of him. he's 26-year-old heather flores aria -- hector flores arias. he was just brought in from mexico and had been a fugitive since 2009. somehow he was able to move his handcuffs from his body and scale a fence. he ran in the parking lot. chief larry esquivel was driving in when he saw arias sprinting. he jumped out of his car. he tackled him but arias got away. then esquivel tackled him again and this time he got him. a police spokesman said the department will be looking into security measures and how this all was able to happen. we'll be talking to them later this morning to get further details. dave? >> all right. thank you. >>> 7:04. meantime san jose police officers may

ktvu's janine de la vega made the trip and shows us how it will make the commute easier. >> reporter: one of the busiest freeway interchanges. 280 to 880. for two years it has been a maze of construction crews. >> a mess off and on. depending on the time and day. rush hour and all that. yeah. i would -- if it was rush hour i would avoid it. >> reporter: this morning a new fly over ramp opened that takes driver from north bound 280 to north bound 880. here is a view from the road. 17, sty the left, 880, sty the right. the -- stay to the right. the change, they were forced to intermix with traffic which takes people to the mall. >> now people from north bound going to oakland, don't have to do that. they have the fly over ramp. there is no intermixing, no weaving. >> reporter: the old interchange was built in 1959. over the years the congestion increased. it caused traffic to bottle bottleneck. now there are three ramps. one for stevens creek, one to highway 17 and one to north bound 880. >> i want to see how fast it will get me to 880. i think it is a big benefit. glad construction is

janine de la vega is joining us live from police headquarters with details on that and security issuesod morning, j mean. >> reporter: it was the police chief that ran after this suspect and tackled him. the suspect we're being told was this a holding cell facility. and that is supposed to be a scourger. i'm being told by officers this morning that that is a locked area. you need a key for it. it's a steel door. there are questions as to how this suspect got out. here's a picture of the police chief. you can see his shirt got ripped and he was bleeding from a cut after tackling the suspect. he was driving through an electric gate when he saw a handcuffed man. that man was 26-year-old hector flores he was wanted for murder in 2009. he jumped out of his car and chased him. they ran on to nearby streets where he was able to take him down. arias was handcuffed behind his back but somehow to get the cutouts front. we have reached out to the police department to find out about the security measures at that holding facility and how arias was able to escape. >> janine de la vega live in san jo

janine de la vega is there and janine, you drove on the new ramp just after it opened. how was it? reporter: you know, tori, it's a bit jarring. it's different. it's gonna take time to get used to. if you are traveling on northbound 280. >> you will en-- if you are traveling on northbound -- northbound 280, you will encounter two ramps. there's the one that takes you to highway 17, the one to the right. that's brand new. it takes you to 880. this new confickration opened up at about 4:30 this morning. if affects those driving on northbound 280 to get to 880. pay attention to the signs. there is a separate flyover ramp that takes you to 880. the transition is pretty smooth before drivers were forced to access 880 by taking the stevens creek exit and mixing with the local traffic. it was an area that always bottlenecked. >> now people going from 280 going to oakland and further north, don't have to do that movement. they have that direct fly overramp. there's no intermixing, no weaving. it will be much faster for them. >> reporter: the flyover ramp is the last milestone in the projec

janine de la vega joining us live now. you are in santa cruz with the latest nicknamed criminal and the success the police department has had. >> reporter: yeah, we're here on the street talking to people. we've shown them the picture of the suspect that they are calling mrs. doubtfire. so far, everyone is laughing. they have brought up a couple of good points. to that in a minute. here is a picture of the suspected bank robber that santa cruz police have dubbed mrs. doubtfire because she -- he is -- she's really a he. excuse me. like the character in the movie. officers say this man walked into a santa cruz bank last friday, wearing a blonde wig, necklace and purse. they say he handed the teller a note demanding money and walked out. they posted this on social media hoping someone could identify them. police say so far giving nicknames is working for them. here's what some people thought. >> if it looked like mrs. doubtfire, i would pay more attention. >> i will worry people will think it's cool and catchy, we don't want

what a story janine. >> yes, dave it is. you know bryan stow was so excited and honored to be invited to throw out the first pitch for the san jose giants and he did great. before bryan was actually seriously injured, he used to be a paramedic and he would sit inside the stadium alongside his gun knee ready to treat anybody who needed help. stow was welcomed by a cheering crowd as he made his way on to the field using a walker. his son and daughter were at his side. he spent the past several years doing rehab. learning to walk again. the giants fan was severely beaten in 2011 outside of dodgers stadium which caused brain damage opinion the san jose giants promise stow's family when he was ready they wanted him to throw out the first pitch. when he stepped on to the mound his practice paid off. earlier in the day ktvu visited stow at home where he shared how he has been doing and how his injury and recovery has changed him. >> trying to find me. it sounds kind of dumb in a way i guess. but it's just me trying to find me now.

janine de la vega said he was caught on camera and now police are making that surveillance video public. >> reporter: the suspect that police are looking for appears to be clean-cut and he really blends into the crowd at the stanford shopping center. that concerns police. there are a lot of surveillance cameras inside the market. one of them captured a high quality image of him. take a good look at this suspect. officers say on sunday morning, he walked up next to a 12-year- old girl and brushed up against her back side twice with the back of his hand while reaching for items on a shelf inside the farmers market. she walked away but officers say the suspect followed her to another aisle and squeezed her butt with one hand. the victim immediately went to her mother in the store and told her what happened. police came but cont find him -- but couldn't find him. >> this is so concerning. you should be able to go to a store with your children and not worry about something like this. yes, she's very concerned, very cooperative with us. we're don'ting to work with -- continuing to work with t

ktvu fox 2's janine de la vega reports on the efforts made by efforts to save a man trapped inside. >> reporter: that popping is the sound of bullets heating up and exploding in the garage of this home on lola lane. the cell phone video was taken shortly after 3:00 this nobodying where you -- this morning where you can see flames. inside a man was trapped. >> i thought about breaking the front door down. i knew where his bedroom was. i started to bang there and started to yell. i baked on it. the window broke. the smoke came billowing out, black economic -- black thick smoke. i knew there was no way i could go in there and have one break of air. >> reporter: firefighters arrived and started to immediately attack the fire and they found the man in the back bedroom where he was one deceased. they say he was in his 60s and not married. they've not officially identified him. >> he was -- yeah. it's heartbreaking to see this happen. >> reporter: neighbors say the reason why there was ammunition in the garage is because the man enjoyed target shooting. >> he would go do like national level
