ktvu janine de la vega live with information on where the fire may have started and also a fire captain was very seriously hurt. what do you know? >> reporter: well, dave that fire captain is at the hospital suffering from serious injuries to his neck. it all happened when the roof collapsed on this town home complex here near lee and fraught dale-- truth dale. this fire started at 8:20 last night here on willow leaf drive. summaries tents thought they heard an explosion and came outside to see flames shooting from the roof. it quickly escalated to three alarms. firefighter doused the flames with water, attacking it from the inside but had to move outside when a roof partially collapsed on a fire captain. >> a fire captain of ours got hurt when a piece of sheet rock fell on him. we were able to get him outside and get him treated and transported over to a local hospital. >> reporter: the fire captain suffered a concussion and a fractured vertebrae in his neck. he's a 16 year veteran and he will have more tests run this morning at the hospital. four town home units were destroyed by wate

ktvu janine de la vega is at the scene.ou're at central avenue and police just gave you an update. what are they saying? >> they gave me a little bit more details of what happened. it was a violent domestic dispute. let me give you an idea of where this is. central avenue in glenmore drive you can see the road is blocked off here. both sides of the street and where all the police cars are is where the violent confrontation occurred between a husband and estranged wife which ultimately ended in that man's life. police received a 911 call from a woman who said his roommate was being attacked by her husband. the caller was hiding behind the door. when police arrived they saw a woman running from the apartment and a naked man holding a knife chasing her. that is when officers confronted the man. >> officers demanded that the suspect stop, drop his weapon. when he refused to do so, officers fired their weapon. the suspect was transported to a local trauma center where he was later pronounced dead. >> reporter: we are told by pol

ktvu janine de la vega live in san jose. you can tell us some of the results. good morning, janine. >> reporter: good morning. all these measures centered around money one of the measures that didn't pass that seemed to be a shock to at least the people we spoke to this morning was measure that centered around gambling and that is measure e. now 42% of the people voted yes. and 58% were against it. now this measure would have increased the amount of gaming tables at san jose's two card rooms. proponents said it would have generated $20 million in tax revenue for the city. political analysts thought this might have been a slam dunk because it seemed like an easy way to get money by taxing casinos. opponents argued it leads to an increase in crime and would have cost taxpayers more in the long run. >> i don't believe gambling results in crime. i on aquations i'll go to -- i on occasions would go to a card room and i'm not a criminal. i believe they should have passed that. >> reporter: now a measure that did pass was raising the minimum wage in the county. that is

ktvu's janine de la vega joins us live from the police station with video you will only see on clue. >> reporter: we just find found out from police they are looking for an hispanic male around 20, 25 years old. they've found the suspect's vehicle that was reported stolen out of san jose and we were the only ones to get exclusive video of it. now, at around 10:00 this morning, detectives were in this neighbor at folsom circle not far away from the original scene. this 1996 tan honda accord was parked there blocking a driveway. police say this is the gunman. they they the -- this is the gun they believe the suspect used. neighbors were questioned by police and they searched their backyards. >> that's pretty scary. thank goodness he's not here now. >> i think it must have been convenience because this was close. >> reporter: this all happened just before 2:00 this morning at jacqueline road. an officer stopped the car for a moving violation. police say the driver got out of the car and started firing at that officer. >> thankfully our officer was not truck. he did return fire. it's unk

ktvu's janine de la vega is at the home in south san jose to explain why police suspect this was a homicide. janine? >> reporter: well, tori, police tell us that the woman's body was found face down and she was lying on the floor. the coroner's on the scene right now. at this point, officer are the waiting to get a warrant to search inside this home. authorities received a 911 hangup call and when officers arrived, they heard dogs barking. they called animal control to help. when police finally entered the home, that's when they found the woman's body. while a weapon has not been found, police have reason to believe that she was killed. detectives have been going door to door to see if anyone heard anything. it's unknown who made the 911 call but officers say it did come from the home where the body was found. >> we attempted to call back to confirm there was a prob or determine if there was a problem occur -- problem or determine if there was a problem occurring because on the call there were no voices. >> reporter: police say a married couple in their 50s live inside the home. now, there

janine de la vega. >> reporter: i just spoke with firefighters who are here on the scene. they tell me that fire captain does have actually some serious injuries. they have been here all night watching this building just to make sure that nothing sparks up here. it's pretty dark but much of this building was damaged. it has left nearly 20 people homeless. the fire started around 8:20 last night on willow leaf drive when firefighters arrived flames were shooting from the roof of this six unit complex that turned into a three alarm fire. some residents had no idea their building was on fire until neighbors pounded on their door. firefighters doused the flames with water from outside and inside. during the attack one firefighter got injured. >> unfortunately we did have a firefighter that was doing interior attack. they did have the roof collapse partially on him. >> reporter: and we just got word again that fire captain does have serious injuries. it appears he does have a broken neck. the flames and water destroyed four of the town homes in the complex. in all 18 people wer

janine de la vega live in san jose where about 100 people camped out overnight in the rain and the cold. so janine, what are they waiting for? >> reporter: they are waiting for a holiday giveaway. it's cold out here. it's in the mid-40s. for these people waiting here, it's been a rough night. despite that they have camped out. they've had tarps and tents. some of them umbrellas. they are huddled up with blankets. a short while ago, volunteers started handing out coffee to warm some of these people up. they are all waiting to register for this holiday giveaway here at the sacred heart community. more than 250 people are waiting in line to receive help. some came at 11:00 and they huddled on the west side. they say it's worth it for them because they wanted to make sure their children got toys for christmas. the majority of people are not home les. many are -- homeless. many are struggling to find a job. others have jobs and are struggling to make ends meet. >> i'm a single parent. i don't make enough at work. i work two jobs and i don't make enough to buy them things for christmas. >> i'

janine de la vega has more. >> reporter: in about two hours, sacred heard -- sacred heart will be handing out these turkeys. people will be getting canned food, stuffing, fresh vegetables. they are okay as far as the number of donations they've gotten of canned foods but they don't -- they will not have enough turkeys to get them to the next couple of days. sacred heart community service will be giving out around 4,000 holiday food boxes to low income families. they will open the doors here at 9:00 a.m. to start handing out the boxes. about a week and a half ago, hundred of people lined up. some with small children. they spent the night make sure they would get the food boxes for thanksgiving and also toys for the staff for christmas. even though the job market has picked up, the staff says it has not helped those low-income families, all of them. >> we're trying to understand the economy ourselves. this past week it was extremely busy here at sacred heart. >> reporter: sacred heart says while they have enough turkeys for today, they won't have enough to get them through tuesday or wednes

janine de la vega near the airport where a section of highway 101 was briefly closed. od morning, janine. >> reporter: good morning, tori. yeah. highway 101 was closed down for about 20 minutes while this was being handled. police did tell me that the man responsible for having done this, he tonight have -- he doesn't have any -- for having this bomb, he doesn't have any priors. now, this strip mall, these businesses were shut down and customers were told to leave and because of that. that's because across the street where you will see this big -- well, there is a pile of sandbags. those cars are blocking it. right there in the island. that's where police had a robot take the bomb to examine it. what you heard was police detonating a pipe bomb that they found inside the vehicle. just before 9:00 last night, officers stopped the van on a routine traffic stop and they determined the driver was under the influence of drugs and that prompted officers to search the van and that's when they discovered the device. they stay was 10 inches loy -- 10 inches long with a fuse on it

ktvu channel 2 reporter janine de la vega is live at mineta san jose international airport. ne. >> reporter: so far there are no delays here. that is good news. it looks pretty dead right now. it comes in waves. people are coming up here and unloading their luggage. coming on in. the roads here i don't know if you can tell, they are slick. so be careful when you drive in. now inside the terminal the lines are short and travelers are not waiting much when they go to check in. there is also no delay going through security screening. as the morning goes on, that will most likely change as more passengers arrive. now there are a few changes the tsa has made. passenger 12 and under and people 75 and older do not have to take their shoes off when they go through security. seniors are also allowed to keep on light jackets. this is one of the busiest travel days of the year the airport is encouraging everyone to arrive two hours before departure. if you can check in online please do so. passengers we spoke to were pleasantly surprised that lines were short so far this morning. >> wel

ktvu janine de la vega joining us live to tell us this is still a very active scene out there along central avenue. what is going on janine? >> reporter: police have been here for the past 7.5 hours and they tell me they expect to be here for a couple more. they are just about to open up the eastbound lanes here. these roads have been closed for a long time. the westbound lanes between central avenue and glenmore drive and logan will be closed. they are in facing a confrontation between a naked man and his estranged wife. it all happened at the town home complex you see there where all the police cars are at. this incident ultimately ended in that man's death. at around 11:00 last night a woman called police to report her roommate was being attacked by her husband. when officers arrived, they saw a woman being chased by a naked man holding a knife. police ordered him to stop and drop his weapon. when he did not officers opened fire and shot him. he was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead. it's unknown how many shots officers fired or where the man was hit. >> we had two

janine de la vega is live in san jose to tell us more about some of the local ballot pressures. janine. >> reporter: dave, a lot of these measures centered around money. one of the most talked about measures here in santa clara county was measure d. that had to deal with raising the minimum wage and it passed. the registrars office was reporting it won by 59%. that is with 100 precincts reporting. this measure means minimum wage will be raised from $8 an hour to $10 an hour. the measure was developed by a group of san jose state students and also championed by labor groups. opponents argued it would hurt small businesses. now another measure that passed is measure a that raises the sales tax in the company by one eighth of a%. 56% voted yes while 44% voted against it. this will raise $50 million annually for county programs. this tax is supposed to be in effect for the next ten years. now a measure that did not pass is measure e with let's see 100 precincts reporting 58% of people voted no and 42% voted yes. now this would have allowed the two card rooms in san jose to increase t

janine de la vega has more. >> reporter: good morning.the marine lived and where his father currently lives. no one has come out of the house yet. we've not been able to contact them. neighbors say they think that the marine attended independence high school. here is a picture of allen debiana. police m palm springs say early saturday morning, officers heard yelling inside a parking garage and when they entered they recognized him from a public intoxication incident earlier that night. they say when the men started to order derogatory remarks at the officers, they ordered them to shut the car off. neighbors in san jose, just hearing the news, are in shock. one suspect lated what the marine might have been -- someone former veteran speculated what the marine might have been going through. >> you think you are okay and then you are going off the deep end. that's the war we mace when we come home. >> reporter: there is a facebook page that's been set up for him where he's been leaving condolences and posting pictures of him. his father did s

janine de la vega is live there. you have been there since 4:30 this morning. any idea how many travelers expected there today? >> reporter: just thousands and thousands really. traffic is really picking up here in the last half hour we moved from terminal a to here to terminal b. this is the terminal that serves southwest. it definitely seems busier here. we have seen a steady stream of cars driving in to drop off passengers. inside the terminal the lines are not too long at the check in. the airport is encouraging people to check in online or home to avoid any wait at all. security screening lines are also moving smoothly at this hour. there are some recent changes the tsa has made. children 12 and under and people 75 and older do not have to take their shoes off. seniors can also keep on light here were pleased to see traffic was light. >> we thought it would be a lot more crowded so we don't usually come so early but we came two hours early. it's been great and there was parking in the parking lot. it was great. a lot lighter than we thought so far. >> repo

ktvu janine de la vega is there. you can tell us how the apple employees are getting ready for this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, dave. we've been here all morning. they used to have a black curtain so you couldn't see inside the store. they took that down in the last 30 minutes. now you see the apple employees until the blue t-shirts. they have been playing around with the new ipad mini. they were in boxes. they just got opened up this morning they really have been trying to play around with them and familiarize themselves with them. now as far as the group of people waiting out here, we took a count just in the last ten minutes and i counted you know about 30 people waiting in line. of course, they are all waiting for the doors to open to get their hands on this new product. some people have been waiting out here since 2:00 a.m.. they brought their lawn chairs and their apple products to keep them busy. analysts are anticipating a lukewarm response of the mini. it is priced higher than the competitors.
