janine de la vega is on scene with why police were chasing after this suspect in the first place. good morning, janine. >> reporter: good morning, pam. police have allen rock blocked off have -- have king roadblocked off from allen rock. homicide detectives are on scene. the shooting ended down the road. it's unclear if the man who police shot will survive. police say around 1:00 this morning an armed robbery took place in the downtown area. a suspect and car description went out to officers and that car was spotted by officers. the suspect wouldn't stop. police pursued it and we are told the car crashed here on the east side near king and beverly. at some point, shots were fired. a lieutenant told me that the suspect actually tried to run over the officer who was on foot. and the officer ended up firing at him because he felt threatened. the suspect we are told is now at the hospital. he is in surgery. again, it is unclear if his injuries are life threatening. we're also hearing from police that they are looking for a second suspect. a spokesperson is supposed to arrive here on th

ktvu's janine de la vega just got there. what's going on? where are you and what's happening, janine? >> reporter: i'm on felipe avenue near 101 and story road. you can see it's still an active seen. there are a ton of firefighters here. you can see they are spraying water into this two-story public storage unit. up above, you can see there is white smoke billowing in the air. it's still a very active scene here. i spoke with the firefighter who said that they still haven't gotten this knocked down. we do know that this fire went to two alarms. it started at about 6:20 this morning. at one point, they thought that a second fire had started on the next street over because of this. it was just all of the smoke billowing in the air and there was some confusion about that. but just one fire here that they are still actively working. i can tell you that there are no injuries reported and we're just waiting for a media person from the fire department to come on scene to try to tell us how soon will they have this knocked down. just to kind of get t

janine de la vega joining us live from santa clara this morning. that warning has been sent out to people connected with the campus, janine. >> reporter: yes, 9:has. summer school is about to end here. there are still students here roaming around. campus police did put out an alert letting the students and staff know about a woman who was sexually assaulted on the edge of campus temperature the sexual predator is described as a white man and he is six feet to six feet two inches tall. 200 pounds with an athletic build. he has light brown hazel eyes and dirty blond hair with a foe hawk. he was clean shaven and has a narrow pointed nose. on wednesday night shortly after midnight a woman was walking on franklin street when the suspect approached her sexually assaulted her, and then ran away. police are not releasing whether or not the victim was a student. this is the latest in a number of attacks on women in the past month and a half. on august 1st a female student was grabbed from behind by a man but she was able to fight him off. and in july santa c

ktvu's janine de la vega joins us live from san jose where police are trying to take hundreds of sex offenders into custody to make the streets safer. >> reporter: this is a concern for authorities because we are very close to a school. this task force is focusing on a homeless encampment here. they are searching for transiates who are sex offenders who haven't registered. the task force, 9 law enforcement officers is conducting a two day sweep. there are 535 sex offenders in the county who are registered as transients. they are required to register where they are living every 30 days. authorities are questioning the homeless if they live there if they have seen certain sex offenders. >> it is extremely challenging. you can see remnants of clothing, garbage that is disposed of and they are hard to find. we -- you know, they they have look outs. they have a way of notifying people down here law enforcement officers on the way. >> reporter: the task force made 8 arrests. and one was a parolee but no sex offenders have not been arrested yet. the five that have been questioned have been

ktvu's janine de la vega is on the scene and joins us live with who police were looking for. good afternoon, janine. >> reporter: good afternoon, tori. there was a massive police presence on story road. it used to be closed in both directions for the past hour and a half. it's back open. officers were looking for a man who tried to rob this check- cashing place. police saturated the area of story road near carl looking for a man armed with a gun. officers say just before 8:00 a.m., he confronted an employee of a check-cashing facility on story road showing a firearm. shots were fired. the suspect ran away into the neighborhood. police called in the s.w.a.t. team and secured a perimeter around a half-mile area. residents were told to stay inside because they believed that the gunman was hiding somewhere there. chopper 2 was above the scene when officers finally located him just after 10:30 on cinderella drive. they brought him out on a stretcher because he injured. >> it appears he was in the rear of a residence in the 200 block of cinderella. he was resistant to officers. he's

janine de la vega was at the b.a.r.t. station in fremont talking to commuters about their contingency plans. >> reporter: as commuters arrived to b.a.r.t., they were already upset thinking about a possible strike. it is going to hurt. it's not going to be inconvenient. b.a.r.t. wants people to repair alternative ways to get to work. one is casual carpooling. there are numerous locations for people to meet. riders are dropped off at fremont and howard or downtown. after noon pickups usually happen on beale street. for those who aren't going to carpool there are other options. b.a.r.t. will provide free charter buses for people who want to get into san francisco. the buses between the east bay and san francisco will run during peak hours at 5:00 a.m. the buses will be at select b.a.r.t. stations carry 4,000 passengers a day. a.c. transit is working on providing extra buses across the bay as well. some commuters are still working on a plan. >> i don't know yet. i'm trying to figure out the buss schedule to oakland because th

in gilroy, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >>> san francisco's fire chief has banned firefighters from using helmet-mounted video cameras. the decision from chief joanne heys white came came after the flight of the asiana plane crash last month. some residents disagree and feel the more firefighters wearing cameras the better. >> i think it's definitely relevant. i think we should definitely have it. we want the truth. >> the fire chief's office says this ban is nothing new. it points to a 2009 policy that prohibits firefighters from having recording devices of any kind. >> reporter: a protest strike by independent truckers have shut down part of the port of oakland. we've been showing you the lines and the line of trucks all morning long. the striking drivers blocked access to a number of berths at the saa terminal. one trucker said they're forced to wait hours to load and unload shipping containers and they say there are no restrooms, no vacations and other poor working conditions. >> too much. over there, one guy is in the line three, four hours. all guys, no moving at all. >>

janine de la vega is there live and spoke with the family members who were inside the house. janine? >> reporter: claudine, family members are very upset about what happened and they are emotional drained. i spoke with the grande son inside the house -- grandson inside the house. he said the smoke filled up so quickly, he couldn't see in front of him. he managed to escape. crews are watching for hot spots. when firefighters arrived to the home on commodore drive off jackson avenue, they saw a column of smoke and heavy flames. they received a 911 call from people inside at 8:40. who told them they had smoke up to their knees and two men were able to escape. but a woman in her 70s, the grandmother, she was trapped inside. >> firefighters entered the back side of the structure where the fire was and they were able to pull out one of the residents from the burning structure. that person is in critical condition. >> reporter: family and friends are concerned about her and are waiting to hear howed about the injuries are. her son was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation but he

janine de la vega is live at the san mateo bridge. ferries are helping commuters across the bay. let's begin with sal castanedo with a look at the commute and some rough spots. >> there are rough spots. we found one on eastbound 880 between ashby and the shoulder. it's a crash in the lanes. it's still there on the right shoulder. traffic is slowing down. westbound 80 traffic is already slow because you come up on the hard closure. the traffic funnels down to about three lanes when normally there are a lot more rains. that's backing traffic up into richmond. someone just asked me what the drive is like. it's a little bit slow on the richmond side but then as you drive through marin, it's not all that bad this morning heading together. i want to look at the maps and show you the traffic on the san mateo bridge approach is going to be one of the slowest commutes we have in the bay area from right about this point hire and making the turn onto the bridge and all the way out to the peninsula. it is going to be slow for you as you drive thr

ktvu's janine de la vega is following this developing news from santa clara and joins us now live. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, tori. this happened a couple of blocks away from the university. a lot of students live in this area. we don't know if the victim in this case was a student but it happened near main and lexington. police tell me that the university police are aware of this incident and plan on cautioning students to be careful. officers say this happened at 1:30 this morning. the woman had been out with a group of friends near a 7 slrn 1 -- with a 7/eleven and dedecided to walk -- decided to walk home alone when she was grabbed from behind. and the man told her, don't talk, don't scream, she kicked him in the groin and he ran away. she wasn't able to get a good description. there are no indications that weapons were used in this battery. the police used k-9s and a scent led them near the homestead and la fayette. but they lost the accident. police believe don't believe this is the same man suspected of raping a woman at kylie at homestead. investigators say th

ktvu's janine de la vega tells us these suspects distract victims to get what they want. good morning, janine. >> reporter: good morning. i just spoke with one neighbor who told me there have been several burglaries in the neighborhood. this is a first one where someone is mosing as an animal service officer. police actually knocked on that neighbor's door to warn him. on saturday at around 5:00 p.m., fremont police say that a woman who disguised herself as an animal service employee came to a home on moore drive telling the resident that a poisonous snake was on the loose and had bitten someone. he said everyone had to leave the house so measurements could be taken. officers say a second suspect went in the house and stole jewelry. another home was hit and in that incident, a homeowner was sold two snakes were on the loose and they needed to get in the house. we spoke to a resident and asked him if he would be tricked, if is what he would say. >> i would like to think i wouldn't fall for it. >> i have many people knocking on my door selling all sorts of stuff. i would li

janine de la vega is joining us with a description of the suspect. >> reporter: the attack happened onn street and as you can see it's right here on the edge of the campus of santa clara university. it's unknown if the female assaulted was a student but regardless police want people to be cautious and aware. police released the sketch of this man who they say sexually assaulted a woman on wednesday. a man approached her and then attacked. after he sexually assaulted her, police say he ran away. campus security has sent out an alert to students and staff making them aware of what happened. this is the third attack that has happened to a woman in the last month and a half. a couple of blocks away a student was battered by a man. and in late july a woman was raped as an -- at this point police say fit doesn't appear that any of these incidents are connected in this case police are describing the suspect as being six feet to 6'2" tall weighing 200 pounds with an athletic build. he has light brown hazel eyes and dirty blond hair. he was wearing a white t-shirt and blue jeans during the time

ktvu's janine de la vega, live in san jose right now, where one councilmember wants to know why this ted. janine? >> reporter: dave, we're here in front of city hall. this is one of the buildings that would be affected if this ban was approved. i've run into a lot of city workers who are hesitant to talk about this on camera but off camera some said they don't think it's right for the government to tell them what certain drinks are healthy or unhealthy for them. under the proposal soft drinks including diet, energy drinks and flavored water would be prohibited from being sold at city hall, community centers, library and happy hollow, so would freet and vegetable drinks with sweeteners with less than 50% real fruit and vegetable juice so would whole milk. the man who authored the proposal says it's not about telling people what they can and cannot drink, he just don't wants unhealthy choices to be authored. again, this will be scursed late -- discussed later on in the afternoon here at city hall. reporting live from san jose, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >>> the emergency al

ktvu's janine de la vega has been talking to victims. what are they telling you? >> reporter: well, they are just glad they are alive you can see it's a big mess. workers had to put up plywood just because of the damage here you can see there's charred debris. the heat and flames were actually so powerful that it actually broke windows in the next building over. we got a first-hand look at just how close the fire came to neighbors who were sleeping in the apartment unit here on waterberry court in west san jose when the fire began. they woke up to screaming at about 12:20. a woman in a first floor apartment said her boyfriend was cooking and left oil in an apartment unattended. the fire spread quickly, dmut gutting two u -- gutting two units and everyone evacuated before firefighters came and were unharmed. >> the red cross is putting us in a hotel. i'll figure something out. you know, everything happens for a reason. >> it's unfortunate but me and my children are still alive. >> reporter: it took firefighters an hour and a half to knock down the two-alarm fire. i

reporting live janine de la vega ktvu channel 2 news. >>> we have developing news in vallejo.e will be searching for a missing oakland woman. sandra coke. police have identified this man randy alana on the left as a person of interest in the case. ktvu katie utehs is joining us live to tell us where the search will focus on and what the police are saying about sandra coke's connection to randy alana. katie. >> reporter: dave, i will speak about his connection in a moment. but first we are getting our first daylight look of the search area which includes the solano county fairgrounds. it is an undeveloped area near vallejo. and the search area is rather vast. and today will actually be the first time investigators will get a look at this area in the daylight. oakland police detectives called for the search of the fairgrounds last night around 6:00 as they looked for 50-year- old sandra coke. police are still calling this a missing persons case. coke was last seen sunday evening. recently she had been looking for her dog. >> boundaries of i-80 on one side and the city of vallejo

janine de la vega is looking at the options commuters have. >> reporter: fremont bart station here is of the unofficial sort of pick up meeting locations for people to do just that. most of them are at bart transit locations. you can see people pull up to the curb so others can hop in and they can car pool. a lot more people are expected to use this option. there are numerous east bay meeting locations designated for morning pick up. most are bart stations. transit centers. drivers usually drop off passengers at fremont and mission streets or nearby downtown san francisco. commuters don't need to prearrange rides because of the designated pickup locations but if you want to insure you will get a ride, there is a 511 ride share match program. car pools on the bay bridge and i-80 are required to have three or more people in their car to use the diamond lanes. riders can volunteer to pay the driver $1 to help pay for the toll. but it's usually up to the drivers to accept. there is no real official rule when it comes to paying for car pool. afternoon pickups for car pool are done on spear

janine de la vega. >> reporter: good morning, dave.that area of fremont. this is where chiefs hit over the weekend. scam artists burglarized a home here in the area after tricking the homeowner. this all happened on saturday evening between 5:00 and 6:00. claiming that a poisonous snake has gotten loose and bit an little girl on the street. the worker said everybody should go to -- that is when an unknown second suspect entered the home and jewelry and cash were stolen. earlier in the day another home was hit in the hill view month see doe area of niles. this time it was two females telling the homeowner poisonous snakes were on the loose and they needed to get into the home and yard to measure for traps. they have one description. >> investigators believe she may be traveling in a grey or silver land rover. the city of fremont says they are not investigating any snake problems or snake infestations. city worker also have a city issued picture id. and they have cars that have a logo on it. if someone approaches you make sure they show

janine de la vega joins us from city hall where the ban is already causing controversy. >> reporter:his new proposal, even diet sodas with sugar substitutes would be banned from certain venues in the city. one city councilman is calling this proposal ridiculous and he wants residents to oppose this to speak up. the pop which is authored. fruit and vegetable drink with sweeteners and 50% real fruit or vegetable use would be banned. along with whole milk. councilman pete calls it a waste of time. he says the city needs to focus on hiring more police officers fixing streets, and improving services. not a beverage ban. he sent out a plea to residents to e-mail the council and attend to today's ruling. we plan on getting in touch with the state leaders to talk about this proposal. something to note that certain city venues would be exempt like the sat center because it does serve commercial purposes. janine de la vega ktvu channel 2 news. >>> also new this morning oakland police are investigating a shooting that injured three people. it happened at 10:00 last night in laurel park. the vic
