janine de la vega is live in los gatos where the attack occurred to let us know what's being done to otect others in the area. good afternoon, janine. >> reporter: good afternoon, tori. well, police this happened here in a strip mall where there is a pizza parlor, a hair salon and dance studio. workers came out here and found the woman on the ground. she just left the dance studio behind me. they say her face was swollen. it was red and she was crying. this police say this was a random attack. it happened on monday afternoon. a woman had just dropped off her daughter at the dance studio on blossom hill and harwood, was walking back to her car when a man approached her and punched her in the face. sheet fell to the ground and witnesses report the suspect running away towards harwood. investigators say this sounds similar to a phenomenon happening across the country where assailants are doing this purely for amusement. sometimes it's videotaped. >> the police are looking to see if this fits some of the motive. but current -- we don't have a motive for this. this was an unprovoked attack

janine de la vega has details you will only see on 2. >> reporter: tori, police say it was intense for a while because the man was holding gasoline containers. police also thought he may have had access to weapons. they wanted to make sure they kept people safe. after 20 minutes or so, officers finally got their man. now here's exclusive video showing the suspect that police took in custody. you can tell him yelling in pain. this all started as police were called to reagan at around 11:30 last night. after people say the man was threatening to use gasoline to burn down the property. when officers arrived, they found the man barricaded himself into a shed in the back of the home. he was holding a woman there against her will. police started to negotiate with them and the woman was able to escape. he lit the shed on fire. >> they were trying to negotiate and get him out, he lit the shed on fire and was engulfed. he eventually came out, resisted. officers had to use some force to take him into custody. >> reporter: firefighters were able to extinguish the fire which only damaged the shed.

ktvu's janine de la vega joins us live with some exclusive new video. good morning, janine. >> reporter: good morning, tori. investigators have been walking around the house looking for any clues to how this started. earlier when was darker, they were shining flashlights looking for evidence. any want to learn how this started. it spread quickly destroying the car parked in the driveway. as you can see, gutting this home. here is some exclusive video that we obtained of the fire taken before firefighters arrived. you can see flames were shooting from the garage and the second floor of the house located here. four people lived there and escaped before fire crews arrived at 1:25 a.m. firefighters worked to knock it down. after 40 minutes they were able to get it under control. neighbors say they threw rocks at the house to try to wake up those inside. but later realized those people were out of the house. some residents were evacuated as a precaution. >> i could actually feel the flames from the front of my house. i was just hoping that they were able to g
