live in san jose janine de la vega ktvu channel 2 news. >>> turning now to our other top story. a statewide amber alert remains in effect as police investigate a possible carjacking in oakland. you are looking at a live picture of one of the freeway signs along interstate 880 in oakland giving the information. now police across the state are looking for three people in this case. but there are many questions surrounding the incident involving a suspected shoplifter, a man, and his 13- year-old girl. last night police released new video of the shoplifting suspect at the center of this amber alert. it was taken just moments before he left a safeway store near highway 13 in oakland yesterday afternoon. witnesses say the man had a knife when he jumped into a parked vehicle and took off with a man and teenager inside. >> we also have information reported to us by witnesses that the occupants of that vehicle did not know the suspect. we want to find them, find them safely. >> so far nonmissing person report has been filed by family or friends of the two possible victims. but investiga

ktvu janine de la vega is there. she will have more in a live report for you coming up in our next half hour. >>> the investigation continues into the oakland shooting where passengers inside an ac transit bus were caught in the middle of a deadly gun battle. it happened near 78th and bancroft avenues yesterday afternoon. two bus passengers started arguing. then after they got off the bus started shooting at each other out on a street with several bullets hitting the bus. one of the unidentified gunmen were killed, the other escaped. no one on the bus was injured. >>> one oakland elementary school will be on lock down due to security concerns. ktvu news obtained a menu. it alerts parents to an unspecified threat against a student that has prompted extra security measures. the gates outside the school will be locked all day while the student is in class. they are also taking several other steps to make sure the students are safe. >>> you already know it is girl scout cookie selling time and a 13-year-old bay area girl

janine de la vega is joining us from san jose with what we are learning about the suspects. janine. >> reporter: homicide detectives are still trying to piece this together but my police sources tell me they believe they know who is responsible for the break in at this home on pine ridge way. it appears the suspects targeted this house. it started just before 8:00 last night in east san jose. the man who lives there told them that an aintruder tried to enter his home and fired shots in his direction. that resident says he got his gun and then shot in that direction to defend himself. two suspects then got into a vehicle and sped off. soon after a man was dropped off at a nearby hospital with one gunshot wound. he was pronounced dead. police believe that man is one of the intruders from the break in on pine ridge. sources tell me officers were able to track down the other suspect at a home near capital and mclaughlin. he was injured from the shooting and taken to the hospital and is supposed to survive. homicide detectives have been connecting interviews and collecting evidenc

ktvu's janine de la vega has been on the scene all morning and joins us live from san jose to let us know when the street is expected to open to traffic. good afternoon, janine. >> reporter: good afternoon. electricians are working right now to try to get these traffic lights up and running here on stevens creek near the 880 ramps. this is a very busy intersection near the mall and santana row. we're hearing it could stay closed until at least 5:00 tonight. the accident started at 6:30, a caravan of big rigs was hauling portable classrooms. one of them hit power lines attached to street lights. live wires were strewn near the on and offramps of 880 along stevens creek. it was frightening for the driver behind. >> we weren't expecting trouble. all of the other trucks exactly the same height as this one went through the intersection no problem. all of a sudden, there was a loud crash and the telephone pole and the lights came out into the intersection and made a big mess. >> reporter: police immediately shut down stevens creek in both directions. it caused a packup for morning commuters

janine de la vega was at the meeting and is live. good afternoon, janine. >> reporter: good afternoon, tori. well, county supervisors say it's unacceptable that the fire department is not meeting its goal to respond -- to respond to emergencies in the required amount of time. now, that county meeting is going on right now. i just got word from one of the people inside the meeting that they took a unanimous vote to withhold the money from the fire department, not to punish the city but in hopes that the city will take action. under the county contract, firefighters are required to respond to emergencies within eight minutes 90% of the time. the county stays firefighters are responding to emergencies 80% of the time. county supervisors had the choice whether to continue to give the fire department incentive money which adds up to 1.4 million annually. some supervisors had strong opinions. >> right now we're incentivizing failure. >> reporter: further complicating the issue is that while the county requires the fire department to make th

. >>> let's go to janine de la vega in the south bay where the rain has caused some damage there. good afternoon. >> reporter: good afternoon. we're here on el monte road where you can see power lines are down here on the ground. that's because of this huge 30- foot pine tree fell down, it took the wires down with it. crews have been chopping up the tree trunks to repair the roadway. but repairs to the wires still need to be done. here's what it looked like earlier. the rain saturated the soil. the tree was already leaning, apparently it was enough to cause this pine tree to come trashing down at 8:30 a.m. it's blocking el monte road. it's affecting traffic in the area. fortunately, no one was injured. it just damaged the power lines and property owner's fence. crews responded to keep people away from the hazard. crews have been cutting up the tree and they have been taking care of the lines. homeowner says he heard a loud cracking, pop sound. >> lights frick flickered -- lights flickered. they were off, on, off, on and then the lights stayed down. my wife said the tree went down.

janine de la vega is in san jose.you've seen several drivers rescued from cars that were driving into deep water, janine. >> reporter: yeah, and now i'm standing on highway 87 in the southbound lanes. now, progress is being made out here. you can see the roadway was flooded but at one point, it was all the way up to where i was standing. now, this has been a problem since 4:00 a.m. you can see one lane of traffic is open at this section. caltrans is on the scene working to try to see if they can drain this water out. it does appear it's receding. we were told by the chp that caltrans is trying to fix a generator that pumps the water out along this section because it's broken. now, at one point, this morning, all southbound 87 lanes were closed because of the flooding. two cars got stuck in the water. the highway patrol had to come and assist them. their cars were towed. at 6:30 a.m., the northbound lanes of highway 87 were also flooded at julian and traffic was down to one lane there. chp was able to clear the drain a
