ktvu janine de la vega has been on the scene since 4:30 this morning. what is happening out there now? >> reporter: well, the fire is out. now arson investigators are back in the office trying to piece together what happened here. they want to find out how this fire started inside a storage unit behind the complex and how did the person get inside. at 1:15 this morning residents called 911 because they saw smoke coming from the carport in the back of the complex. they found an attached storage unit on fire. they quickly put the fire out and opened up the door and found a body inside. police and arson investigators came to the scene to gather ed. at this point they are not calling it a homicide. >> we are looking at a lot of different possibilities. a lot of different scenarios that could have led up to this. right now we don't have any specifics. we are looking into all the different things. >> reporter: we saw these people hugging and two of them told us that they believe they know the person who was dead. police did confirm the owner of the storage un

ktvu's janine de la vega is in morgan hill and you've been talking to neighbors. what do they say? >> reporter: well, they are telling me that they have heard about all of these burglaries in the area. the news is spreading fast belong the people who live here in this green leaf neighborhood near 101. you can see the person who owns this home actually chained their dear lawn -- their deer lawn ornament to the tree since it wouldn't be stolen. there's been 23 burglaries here. eight homes have been broken into during the day. they are taking electronics, jewelry. officers say those thieves are smashing windows and grabbing what they can. people we spoke to this morning are troubled by the news. >> it's very concerning because, you know, you feel that you might be in a safe neighborhood and especially when you have children that are in the neighborhood. you know, cars and christmastime and how this might affect, you know, people that we know and love in our neighborhood. >> reporter: we found these two cars with the engines running and no one inside, just in the last 10, 15 minutes. t

ktvu's janine de la vega just talked to one of the victims. so what did they say? >> reporter: well, they are thinking about the memories last night and they said they had -- it was just a very -- he was released from the hospital. his neighbors we're told are back at home safe. he thinks that they are still sleeping right now. he tells me his symptoms were terrible. he couldn't smell anything but had a difficult time breathing. just after eight last -- after 8:00 last night, the fire department was called to a mobile home on bay road. the elderly couple who lived inside set off a fogger used to fill fleas. firefighters say they did not leave the house and started to feel ill. firefighters say that couple's two dogs -- they had two dogs and didn't realize that they needed to leave the house when they set off the fogger. firefighters arrived and they were exposed as well. here's what victims had to say. >> i didn't smell anything for a while. but then i started to taste it in my mouth and i got cotton mouth right away. i got this headache and walked out front, the f

ktvu's janine de la vega is in san jose.en out there since 4:0 and you just talked to the -- 4:30 and you just talked to the fire official. what are they saying? >> reporter: well, there's still no cause. but the fire official said they will most likely not have investigators come out this morning. they've been spending time in the second-story apartment. they feel they have what they need to figure out the cause. this all started from an apartment that is boarded up because of the severe damage inside. yesterday, residents came back to their apartment to gather essentials. the fire broke out here at 11:00 on saturday night. the red cross is helping house 47 adults an 26 children because there is no electricity in the building and there's still water and smoke damage. their neighbors, a man, his wife, and daughter died in the apartment before firefighters could reach them. neighbors told us in spanish how they feel for the little girl's mother. now, ktvu's janine de la vega joining us live near keenis drive off hamilton south.d to someone who may have known the person who died. janine? >> reporter: dave, relatives tell us the man who lives in this second-floor apartment there, he believes that the person who die the in the fire was his -- who died in the fire was his son. at 1:15, a fire broke out behind this apartment complex on keenis drive. the fire was burning -- burning in the storage unit attached underneath the carport. firefighters quickly extinguished it. when they opened the door, they found a body inside. it's unclear what the people were doing inside, but there were miscellaneous items along with a couple of bottles of clog. the police are not calling this a homicide right now. the cause is undetermined. neighbors have a lot of questions and have expressed concern. >> it's very sad that somebody would die like that. that part is -- especially at the holidays. it's horrible. no matter what condition he was in. very, very sad. >> we saw this group of people who were hugging each other earlier. the

ktvu janine de la vega has a look at the sketch police hope will lead them to an arrest. janine. >> reporter: pam, th morning police are combing through evidence they found in this mansion. they will not tell us how the homeowner was killed but they did release a sketch of the suspect. he is described as white or latino between 23-24 years old. he's around six feet tall and described as being skinny with black hair and dark eyes. this man and several others broke into this home early friday morning. when officers arrived, they found the house was ransacked and the body of 66koomra. his wife was beaten but did not have any serious injuries. he is the former owner of the historic winery. it's unknown if this couple was targeted or if this was a random home invasion robbery. police want anyone who might have information about the victim or if you recognize the man in the police sketch to give police a call. reporting live janine de la vega ktvu channel 2 news. >>> people on both sides of the same sex marriage issue will be closely watching the supreme court this morning. jus

ktvu janine de la vega is in san jose to tell us how that fire may have started. janine. >> reporter: dave, we're here in a strip mall in the evergreen area. behind me you can see the two restaurants panda express and pasta next door. you can't see any outside damage. but when they open up they will evaluate how much nay have to clean up inside. both restaurant were full of customers when the fire erupted just before 9:30 last night. they started smelling smoke and everyone evacuated. at first firefighters didn't see the flames buffablely located them in the -- but finally located them in the attic. they say it was difficult to access so they could extinguish the flames. >> it was smoldering for quite awhile. once we made access we were able to extinguish it quite quickly. >> reporter: firefighters say there is no significant damage from the flames but there could be some left over from the water they use. the sprinklers inside the building helped it from spreading. nobody was injured. the electrical signs back out here live that you see here, firefighter believe

ktvu channel 2 news' janine de la vega has more on this story, janeane? >> reporter: police tell me he was driving drunk and you can see the damage in the front of the that truck. we are told the driver crashed into the apartment complex that you see across the street. the driver was driving eastbound on taylor when he crashed into the apartment complex. half of the truck crashed into the bedroom where a two-year- old girl was sleeping in a crib. he tried to back out and tried to escape and in the meantime the people were frantically searching for their little girl. we are told the girl was taken to the hospital and is expected to be okay. witnesses say the driver tried to drive away but his truck broke down and that's when authorities got to the scene and arrested him. he is eye didn't paid to as joseph austin and he was arrested for driving under the influence. residents here are shaken up, two adults and two children live in that apartment complex but there is a gaping wall there so there is bound to be a lot of clean up there this morning. janine de l

ktvu janine de la vega is there with the latest details of what happened and where. janine. >> reporter: we are here on oakland road at a business park. the homicide unit is in route. they quarantined off this area where you see the agency. that is a photography business where the man was fatally stabbed. police say they received a 911 call around 3:00 this morning a man had been stabbed at that business called the agency. they arrived and found a group of people at the scene who say they were having a party when a fight happened. >> we do know it was some type of argument. what it's about we still don't know. we have several witnesses we're talking to and none of the suspects have been identified at this point. >> reporter: some witnesses left the scene before police arrived. we know the man was stabbed in his stomach. he was rushed to the hospital where he died soon after. now it's unknown if the stabbing occurred inside that business or outside in the parking lot. the police tell us they haven't started gathering evidence just yet because they are waiting for the
