ktvu's janine de la vega tells us why there was concern for the nearby creek and what they know so far about this fire. >> reporter: fire investigators rummaged through charred remains of this van in hopes of figuring out why it went up in flames. a neighbor took this picture showing what it looked like outside of the cedar apartments on union avenue at 4:00 a.m. this morning. >> i heard a loud explosion like a big bang. i opened the curtains and saw the flames. flames about 15 feet were coming out of the van. >> reporter: the flames spread to the honda and suv. the fire station is located several door downs. so firefighters responded quickly and were able to put out the fire in 15 minutes. >> one or two of the vehicles' gas tanks were affected by the fire. we had a fuel leak. don't know how much but the crews fairly quickly recognized the fact that there was fuel in the water from the firefight. >> reporter: firefighters shored up the drains and blocked the fuel from going into the los gatos creek. as a precaution, 40 residents were evacuated. they were let back inside after an hour.
