. >> abc 7 news reporter janine della vega has the story. >> reporter: it was a play that will always be remembered by 49ers fans, the catch dwight clark made in 1982 that helped get the team to its first super bowl. the legendary football player has now grown weak. he started experiencing the symptoms of als in his left hand back in 2015. it's something lucy knows all too well. her husband, charlie, was a well-known football coach at los gatos high school. he later died of als. >> well, it seems to be a death sentence. he can fight it and he is a fighter. he's very kraj ourks as my husband was. my husband had been told he had a year to live. he lived 34 years. >> reporter: in an open letter clark wrote i can't run, pray golf or walk any distances. picking up anything over 30 pounds is a chore. the one piece of good news is that the disease seems to be progressing more slowerly than in some patients. als affects the nerves and muscles. as it progresses, people with the disease lose the ability to move, speak, swallow and breathe. while clark suspects football may have caused the disor

abc 7 news reporter janine della vega is joining us live now with more. janine? >> reporter: larry, soccer fans have been arriving for the last hour. they are very excited, getting pumped up here, tailgating in the parking lot. a lot of them are starting to enter the stadium. they are here to watch the u.s. men's team take on honduras. right now there is a special ceremony under way and it's honoring our own brandi chastain, an olympic soccer champion. she's being inducted into the national soccer hall of fame. chastain is best known for her penalty shootout kick against china in the 1999 fifa women's world cup and the way she celebrated afterwards with her team. she's about to officially be inducted any moment now. we did catch up with her earlier today to talk about how her passion lives on through coaching. >> what i recognize now through coaching is that the empowerment you give to these young people to be able to stand on their own two feet, have a voice, make decisions, make mistakes, get up, fight on, put their arm around their teammate, do so many great t

janine della vega is live at the scene. you're telling us this chase was pretty dramatic, right? >> reporter: dan, police say that the man that they shot at is in the hospital right now. he is suffering from life-threatening injuries. he was in a pickup truck that is behind all the patrol cars that you see that is here on stevens creek boulevard, which is shut down from cabot to lawrence expressway. now, here is some video taken just after the shooting took place in the safeway parking lot on stevens creek. a witness took this video of police surrounding that black pickup truck that the suspect was in. police tell us that around 1:30, someone called 911 to say a naked man was in the street acting erratically. when officers arrived, he jumped in the black truck. police started chasing him. they say he rammed into a patrol car during that pursuit. he also crashed into another vehicle and just kept on driving. the truck somehow became disabled and it rolled into the safeway parking lot here on stevens creek and stopped. sometime during all of this, officers fired shots. here's what

janine della vega is live on the scene and joins us with the very latest.ou talked with a witness that saw this whole thing unfold, right? >> reporter: stevens creek boulevard and lawrence expressway is where this happened. stevens creek is closed in both directions and you can see there is a huge police presence with a ton of officers here because they're investigating the scene. this all centers around the safeway parking lot here. there is a truck that you can't see, but it's behind those patrol cars. it's a black pickup, riddled with bullet holes and we're told that it was involved in an officer-involved shooting. now let's go to some video that we just got from a witness that shows moments that happened during the shooting. he said that he heard several gunshots, this witness, and then he ran over to the scene. he said officers were yelling at a man to get out of the truck. he was silent. he was not getting out of the truck. then suddenly he saw glass breaking and the officers pulled him out. now, from sky 7, you could definitely see the street is bloc
