these trees were first planted in san francisco's japan town -- these were the first planted in japan town in over 50 years since the redevelopment agency uprooted every tree in japan town during the 60s and 70s. the cultural center planted the cherry blossom trees to commemorate the 1994 visits by his majesty emperor of japan during a two week tour of the united states. my office is committed to working with japan town merchants and japan town for justice and japanese cultural center of northern california and other community leaders to rehabilitate the trees, which seems likely impossible, and more likely to replant and replace these cherry blossom trees that were vandalized as soon as possible. and colleagues with everything that is happening in our country during this difficult time, we must continue to stand with our api community in san francisco and our japanese american residents in solidarity. japan town in san francisco is one of the last japan towns remaining in the united states and one of the oldest in the united states. we have seen communities across the country step up
