. >> reporter: in america's oldest japantown, the grand opening of the japantown senior apartments in san jose. some members of the japanese-american community helped welcome new residents to the neighborhood. >> we are a jewel, and we are proud of japantown. >> reporter: at a cost of more than $27 million, the housing project took nearly eight years to finish, a 75-unit community made possibl possible by the lo tax credit. >> the rent has been skyrocketing and people i've normally seen, seniors, are now in substandard housing are now homeless. that's the nature of the crisis and that's why this housing is vital. >> reporter: residents say they're honored to live in a neighborhood with so much history. >> when i'm out and about, i can't wait to come home. i think about this nest, you know, as, wow, i get to go here. >> reporter: the new complex is not too far away from two of the area's most iconic buildings, including the japanese-american museum of san jose and the san jose buddhist temple. this year the community is commemorating the 126th anniversary of japantown. >> the history.
