year, affects all aspects of my life both privately as well as nonprofit executive director in the japantown community but also fire commissioner. the influence of m.t.a. on all aspects have been great influence in terms of being a private citizen. being 25 years within the commission, it also talks that i've seen the development of the pedestrian and safety. i've seen the concept of bicycle and bicycle lanes. i've seen the development of what we call the bumps, the small bumps, the big bumps in the middle of the streets. i've seen the emergence of slow streets. i basically definitely appreciate the cooperation between m.t.a., the department, and our fire department, but as you can tell from us, the jurisdiction of the fire department and myself as a fire commissioner, we take this very seriously. i understand what's going on, i understand the pandemic, and i understand your concern. my bottom line to the chief of the department and to all the staff, if there is a medical emergency as you roll out of that house, and our first priority is to get you the support in terms of emergency, public s

unrealistic about the current situation, a little detached from reality and communities like chinatown and japantown that have been strong supporters of the legislation. so in addition to thanking vice chair preston for his early collaboration on this, i want to thank legal outreach and allen lo and others and particularly my staff for helping to shape our thinking around this legislation. i also want to note that we heard some really valuable recommendations for amending the legislation from the bar association of san francisco, while we're not legislating the changes in the ordinance, we will continue working with the mayor's office of housing to enhance this legislation through administrative guidance, through the rules you well know chair melgar that the department can promulgate. and if landlords and tenants are arriving at a satisfactory agreement, that goes above the terms of this. the bar associations conflict intervention service has been very helpful. if anyone wants to reach out to our offices for referral, we're happy to provide it. and i want to express my gratitude to the lower polk la

terms of grants at least $500,000 in private donations to help to support their small businesses in japantown. so, again, we have learned, first-come-first-serve, that didn't work so well. and then we did the mini-grant program that we worked with our partners and those efforts were so successful in terms of reaching our communities of color that we decided that in round two of resiliency that we wouldn't force them to reapply. we took their applications of both the women-owned businesses and those many neighborhood, mini-grants and we absorbed them into our second round of resiliency for consideration, in addition to opening it up to new applications. so then we conducted a lottery from those applicants. since then, again, we have evolved and changed. i would also say -- and i will speak to the next slide please -- i will just go through in terms of what our level of impact and then go to our latest grant and what it has been and how that has shifted also. next slide, please. so, again, the need is huge and though the amount of funding that we have been able to not only fundraise but to reap

last week, i was in japantown, announcing an additional $10.6 million in grants for small businessesme of the other resources. because when san francisco starts to open, what's important to me is that we all recover together, and what that means is making sure that we support one another. not just through city resources, but by going to our local stores and our businesses and our communities. now since this pandemic began, i am really proud that i would go out and walk in the neighborhoods, i would go to some of the these businesses, i would just walk down the street if i needed to pick up a plunger for my toilet or anything else -- go to the local hardware store or anyplace where i needed anything, and you know what? if we just take a moment to look around us, all the things that we may typically honestly order on amazon, we can find them right here in shops right here in our city right here in our neighborhood. i want to also thank council merchant associations japantown association japanesetown culture and asian pacific islander. i have a few additional amendments today that i believe my team has shared earlier that are nonsubstantiative and they will do the following. at the small business commission as a nominating entity and second is to reduce the number of neighborhood signatures required for businesses who choose to apply the pe mission and that signature requirement from 50 signatures to reducing to 25 signatures. but to also require the office of small business to produce an annual report on the characteristics and demographics of the businesses included in the industry. these amendments will further ensure that the implementation of this program against the city's racial equity is language access goals and that the industry includes an equitable balance of industries and the type of businesses. i am sorry that, you know, director dick endrizzi from the office of small business is not available today but my staff is here and i'm here also happy to discuss these amendments and, if you
