it's quite a mouthful, but it's finally known as the center in sf japantown. we would like to start by thinking claudine cheng and the chairs of tonight's celebration . thomas allen grace, thank you for bringing us here together. it feels so nice to celebrate our diverse aapi community and just to be joyful, right like this is so nice to be altogether. the center is celebrating our 50th anniversary this year, and the theme of our celebration is celebrating generations. so as we celebrate , we're thinking about our essay . the first generation of japanese people who came to this country started a new life and built the community that we know today to be japantown. and we also think a lot about our niece are second generation who have been so resilient as they have faced so many injustices and overcome so many barriers. our niece have been forcibly removed not just once, but twice the first time when they were forcibly removed and unjustly incarcerated during world war two. and the second time when they were forcibly removed by the redevelopment agency, all in t

the church served as a foundation for what would become san jose's japantown, one of three remainingns in the country. i am standing on the shoulders of many, many people who have sacrificed a lot to build up this church original chapel. these are the original beams. john oda has been senior pastor for less than a year. but he says the legacy of the church and its role in the community is why wesley has continued to thrive. i don't think they thought about whether there's church would be here 125 years later. but i do believe that their intent was to establish something that was going to be long lasting. wesley started with a small chapel, which over the years has been restored and remodeled. the building still has its original framing and stained glass windows. now the church has a second sanctuary with space for require and praise and worship team. a fellowship hall and an education building. i started coming to wesley because my grandma came here. and so this space provides different meanings. for me. it's a part of my history. part of my roots. it's a chance to reconnect with my

we are kicking off this saturday, april 29th first at noontime in japantown. great sorry, curious there and then in her team, we are going to have a 23 hours of celebration. japantown after which we are going to samoan community parliament center in precipitation fairly. thank you very much. restituto and your team. they are also going to have the aapi month kick off. so you know, everywhere in the city . we want to have action. we want to engage, you know, met people in the different neighborhoods so that you know we are all part of it. so, um and i look forward to seeing of your next wednesday. we will have a full house if you have not registered. please do so, and, uh, as many of you have been to our events, the first hour is at the herbst theater where we do the piece was presentation and some cultural performances. but then everybody comes to city hall, where we will transform it to be our party space. so i hope that all of you will stay and come and enjoy yourselves. so thank you very much for being here. and please take a poster with you if you can put
