this festival will be held at the amc kabuki theater eight there in japantown. now in its 12th season, the festival is usually held in los angeles, but founder san francisco native dave brown wanted to bring it home. earlier today on the four, we spoke with brown about the importance of bringing these films to a bay area audience. >> we all came together. i said, hey, we have to go ahead and make this happen and highlight san francisco. and not only that, with our great mayor london breed, it's great to have her. you know, she she gave me the stamp of approval and said, dave, you got to come home and do it. and i said, i wouldn't. why not? i have to this is where it all started for me. and i know good and well. there's a lot of other people out there too that can shine in hollywood. >> one of the feature films is about san francisco. it's called faces of the city. it's comprised of six standalone documentary short films focusing on social justice. well tens of thousands of people are expected for a last minute rave right there in san francisco's civic center. th

is so much rich history when we talk about the harlem of the west because with the proximity to japantown relationship that happened when the japanese community was moved to the concentration camps when we have these converse about community what that looks like the harlem of the west. the j town, the community. the partnerships. and the rich history. and culture. fillmore represents so much for folks, and so when you think about the attempt to build yoshi's there really unite jazz and music and diverse communities, people are still holding onto that hope and that symbolism and how we celebrate the rich, diversity that lives there about world war 2 and the japanese americans. it was the african american community that that showed support for the japanese american community had many family members tell me me that in on this student teeth, we're also of course, mourning the loss of a giants great san francisco's willie mays. what did he mean to to this city? and what did he mean to a lot of the black athletes out there? even beyond the black athletes? you talk about the the representation.

he helped revitalize japantown in san jose and you'll hear more about those accomplishments in the nextry coming up at 6:00. really looking forward to that. ian thank you. vta has announced what company will be handling the massive job of extending bart tracks into silicon valley. the ten year, $490 million contract was awarded to bechtel corporation. bechtel played a large role in the first phase of the bart extension. under this new contract, the construction company will be responsible for managing all phases of construction, including tunneling, building stations and testing. the system project includes six more miles of tracks, bringing bart through downtown san jose and into santa clara. construction is expected to begin later this year. well, celebrations for pride weekend are already underway in san francisco. 250 couples were married inside the city hall rotunda today. couples were given commemorative pride, marriage licenses, took photos and a photo booth. this comes two days before the city's pride parade, and safety and security are top of mind this year. summer started with

keeping that part of the japanese tradition of this in that way here in japantown is pretty special. its great. >> san francisco is a positive impact on my chinese business. >> i'm the founder of joe-joe. i'm a san francisco based chinese artist. i grew up in the bayview district. i am from china i started at an early age i started at age of 10 my grandfather my biggest inspiration. and i have followed with my traditional art teacher in china:i host educational workshops at the museum and local library. and i also provide chinese writing in public middle school and that way i hold more people fall in love with the beautiful of our chinese calligraphy. it is a part of our heritage. and so we need to keep this culture alive. hand writing is necessary field that needs to be preserved generation toieneration. this art form is fading away. but since covid i have been very dedicated to this art and i hope that my passions and serving this art form. there are many stores and shopping centers and companies that are interested in chinese cal iing ravi. i feel motivated to my passion for chine

and of course also always appreciate your support for japantown. and you know, i know now that you're under renovation. so it's a little bit tougher to figure out how to program that space, but just just really appreciate arts commissions, support and to just kind of see the trend in the last few years to really, i think under your leadership and under your vision, that to really help the communities of color and then artists to really like, but like budding career and their their art form every corner in the city. but i do also concur with the sentiment with supervisor melgar, that at the end of the day, the edge of square is so successful is because it has a home. now it has a base where artists can create and figure out, like how do they place their art in different corners of the city. so i really agree that the capital infrastructure investment is critical. and so how do we carry them there, i do have some questions about your funding sources, beyond the local taxes. and we know that you're really largely funded by hotel tax. and clearly it's,
