jared bernstein how you found thanks for joining us a pleasure. and first of all just a personal question if i may. many musical prodigies were also mathematical privacies you know it's a great example there's a math that music you started out music how did you end up you know it's hard for me i'd be there i'm not sure i think you know. new music is just a huge part of my life and always has been. was very drawn to music early on but interestingly i think there is a connection there i always liked math and statistics and ultimately being a musician i think in another wrinkle here is being a musician i felt i wasn't really doing enough on kind of the political economy side of life i was brought up in a household where if you're not part of the solution you're part of the problem and . so one jam session too many i decided probably ought to try to do something else and went into economics and went in. and ended up you know for the record being one of the one of the contributors to the economic recovery act i was alluding to screw so-called stimulus

and jared bernstein. he was economic policy advisor to vice president joe biden until this past april. from boston ken rogoff of lar vard university, previous chief economist at the imf. i am pleased to have all of them here. i will start with paul krugman. what's happening to the ecomic recovery? >> there really has never been much of an economic recovery. when all is said and done i like to look just-- what are the fraction of adults who are employed that fell off a cliff between 2007 and 2009. and it has really not recovered at all it is bouncing along. so basically we' in a holding pattern. in an economies that's growing but job growth is no faster than population growth. >> rose: does job growth have anything to do with increased prottivity. people are still doing more with less in terms of workers. >> that always happens. what ihappening now, it i not that there isn't work for these workers to do. it isn't that there isn't spending power. people aret spending enough to employ the people that we have

those are reports from inside the prison where jared loughner is being held.shooting gabrielle giffords and several others. he's due in court now. at argument is whether the prison should be able to forcibly medicate loughner. his lawyers say such a move violates his rights but prosecutors argue that he's a danger to others and himself. cnn's senior legal analyst jeffrey toobin joins me now. can the prison make that call? >> the short answer is the prison is allowed to give him medication if he's a danger to himself or others. where it gets complicated is, is the prison allowed to give him medication to make him fit for trial? because at the moment, the judges say he's not fit for trial. and that question, they haven't quite reached it yet, but it's a very hard and interesting question. >> so it sounds like what will also be argued is what type of medication would these prison officials want to give him. >> well, usually judges stay out of the question of what kind of medication. judges recognize they're not doctors and they're not going to run through a list

we want to get right now to the scene and jared dilling ham with our affiliate ktkvment jared, pleaseetous the scene now. >> reporter: one week ago you could see the winds picking uh. the wind have been driving this all week. in the one week it has grown to 180,000 acres, and that as you said made it the third largest wildfire in state history. we have had a number of them here in the desert southwest. now the reason you can't see flames behind us or even a big plume of smoke rising out of this fire is because this thick layer of dense smoke is just choking the entire region now. on a normal day right now you would be looking at the beautiful mountains outside this town, but certainly nothing today. as for damage done so far on the wildfire in eastern arizona, several cabins have burned. but for now the firefighters have been able to keep the flames away

jare cook now reports. >> it is official.uge parts of "evening edition" land are in drought, farmers battling to water their crops. it may be hard to believe if you have been exposed to all that rain in scotland. but here, months of dry weather have triggered today's announcement. >> we are monitoring the situation carefully. we are being particularly vigilant in terms of environmental impact. we are working with farmers who pump water over the next few weeks. >> what is the impact? for farmers, the drought decoration gives authorities the power to restrict the water they take from streams or crops. cutting water back or stopping it all together could make it very difficult. >> the demand for crops like this is great in july and june when they start ramping up. that is what we fear, that we will be completely banned then. so we will be totally reliant on nature. >> they have been reassured that water supplies are not running out. but at the same time we are all being urged to use less water and to change our habits. >> we nee

now, meantime in southern california a court is set for tomorrow for jared loughner. he's going to get a hearing. you'll recall he's being treated in a federal psychiatric hospital in missouri after a judge ruled him mentally incompetent to stand trial. lawyers want to stop doctors -- his lawyers want to stop doctors from being able to forcibly give him psychotropic drugs that could restore him to competency that, could treat his schizophrenia. this raises many questions. i spoke about all of this to sonny hosten and dr. sanjay gupta. >> what do we know about loughner's current mental state? has anything changed since he was declared unfit to stand trial in may? >> it doesn't sound like it. he's been in the hospital. there's most recently this question of medicating him. that prompted this entire discussion about whether he could be medicated. it sounds like he still has some of the same issues that have led to this -- hospitalization in the first place, having the schizophrenic, paranoid delusional sort of behavior, not being in touch with reality and unable to confe

we're getting new insight into just how disturbed jared loughner may be.he will ever be stable enough to stand trial. in april, loughner allegedly spat and lunged at one of his attorneys before being restrained by guards. and during a session with a psychiatrist, he started cursing and threw a plastic chair at him. he also hurled a wet roll of toilet paper at a camera in the room. prosecutors are making these allegations in court filings as they argue that loughner can be forced to take antipsychotic drugs. they claim he is a danger to others, but defense attorneys believe prison officials cannot force loughner to take medication without a court order. today federal judge larry burns has scheduled an emergency hearing to resolve the legal debate. this comes a month after burns determined that loughner is not competent to stand trial because he's a paranoid schizophrenic and delusional. loughner is being held at a federal prison in springfield, missouri, for up to four months while medical professionals try to restore his mental health. there are no guarant
