joining us now is jared bernstein, former member of president obama's economic team, former economicdviser to vice president joe biden and who is now a senior fellow at the center on budget priorities and msnbc contributor. jared, thanks for being here. >> thank you for inviting me. >> voters are as close as they get to unanimous. that keeping teachers and firefighters and cops on the job is the right thing to do right now. is there anybody else who is opposed to this along with these republican senators and ben nelson? are economists as a group saying this is a bad idea or something? >> no, i mean, you can always find some economist to say something bad about anything. overall it's widely recognized that the president's jobs plan in total is what's needed to start nudging the unemployment rate in the right direction. if we don't do that, we're probably going to be looking at an unemployment rate that's 9% or north of that a year from now like we are now. we have democrats to the right of republicans. i was struck by these poll results. 27% more republicans wanted to see teachers and

what do you think, jared?nge the president's me message come november? >> a little bit. but it's going to take more than a quarter of 2.5%. the economics of this are kind of interesting and perhaps somewhat underappreciated. growing 2.5% is a lot better than something less and it certainly puts the double dip fear at least temporarily behind us. but it's not fast enough to bring the unemployment rate down in a noticeable way. in fact, if you look at the forecast for the jobs report that's coming out later this week it's pretty much to stay around where we are. job growth in the 100,000 range. unemployment around where it is. also the president's measures, you talk about the mortgage relief, the student loans, i happen to think they're very good, positive measures. in both cases, by the way, those help with kind of the deleveraging cycle, paying down debt. they're too small to move the needle on unemployment much. for that you really need to go to the jobs plan. definitely moves in the right direction and it's

jared -- [applause] >> thank you all for coming. it was really great to have my boss here and administrator mills. i chose to come to talk about the amazing work that this part of the world around green jobs -- to the happening everywhere. it is really happening here. in terms of the enormity of the announcement today, the gyre of plastic floating in the ocean is now twice the size of texas. there are parts of the ocean where the ratio of plastic to plankton is now 10 parts of plastic to one part of plankton. so this is a very large-scale issue. i think people feel very depressed when they think about it and do not know what they can do. epa is doing a number of things, and so is method. one is to reduce packaging. how do we reduce the amount of packaging? one way to do that is to insure all the packaging is as efficient as possible, but also made of recycled material. another thing they're doing in the bay area and l.a. is to set 0 limits on the amount of trash that could go to water bodies. so the l.a. river has a zero trash total

here's jared bernstein. he's with the center on budget and policy priorities, and as former chief economist to vice president joe biden, he's no stranger to presidential politics. >> the long american election cycle is upon us. i do not take the privilege of democracy lightly. what matters most to the future of our country is that voters clearly understand the issues at hand. there is too much at stake to throw up our hands in confusion on the policy, only to decide which candidate we'd like to share a beer with. so lets talk facts. candidate herman cain claims that his 9-9-9 tax plan will lower the federal tax bill for the middle class. yet every independent analysis i've seen shows this to be false. the tax bill for a $50,000 household with two kids would go up by $5,000 under his plan, and because the plan exempts so called non-labor income like capital gains and stock returns from taxation, the tax bill of the very wealthy would fall. this would exacerbate our already severe inequality problem, yet that
