what is that, jared?ll, first of all, there was a small decline in average wages over the first ten years. but what the cbo said was that's one of the things that happens when lots of low wage workers come into your country. they bring down the average. this were careful to say we're not saying this hurts the wages of domestic workers. if you look in the second ten years, they actually find average wages increasing more so really, and by the way, one quick point on this and it's been underappreciated. if you think about all the folks who are working in the shadows now, they're already here. so to bring these potentially exploited workers out of the shadows is not only better for them but better for any workers already competing with them here. >> absolutely. now, i'd like to play something that congressman buck mckean said of hispanic people at a recent town hall. take a listen to this. >> probably would agree with you. there are people that think that that can't tell the difference between hispanic perso

jared, you first.hat's your take on these new numbers and the fact that if you're looking at it, the share of working adults haven't budged in the labor force really much at all. >> well, first of all, i really like the way you say jobs report friday. i mean, you just make it sound fun. >> you got to sell it, jared. you know? >> i hear you. it's a report that i've described as kind of symptomatic of an economy that's stuck in maybe second gear, something like that. we're far away from going backwards, so we're reliably not looking at recession, but we're not growing fast enough to quickly absorb the slack that's still left over from the great depression. and in that sense, if you think about how fast the economy's growing in gdp terms, it's between 1% and 2%. this is the kind of report you'd expect. 162,000 jobs, if you average out over the past few months, we're kind of in a 175, 200,000 range per month. that's fast enough to slowly nudge the unemployment rate down, b now, one quick thing. you mention

why is the minimum wage such a crucial part in the fight for equality, jared?an hour in today's dollars, adjusting for inflation. because it adjusts the wage floor for so many of the working poor. you know, who has the least amount of bargaining power in this country? minorities, people with less than a college education, folks who are stuck in low-wage jobs. now, maybe there was a time years ago, particularly when we're talking about nonminorities when folks passed through those minimum wage jobs on the way to better jobs. but we now know many people, disproportionately minorities, but whites as well have been stuck in those jobs. and if you just ask the average guy or gal on the street what makes more sense to you, banks that just posted a 23% profit over last year, $42 billion in one quarter, that's a record. the last record by the way was the previous quarter. it was about 40 billion. or doing something that would help steer a little bit more of the growth to workers who are helping, frankly, to bake a larger economic pie, but ending up with smaller slices.

nobody is saying they should be guaranteed a wage, so what are you proposing, jared?ou think we should have a small business owner with a living wage? they're the ones putting the capital at risk, and if so, who will fund that? >> i think this is a fair argument. you raise good points. i think the history of moderate increases show that in fact franchises do fine, but it is true that some of it comes out of their profit, some out of prices, some out of actually enhanced productivity and lower vacancy rates, so that's a good thing. >> have you ever small a small business before? >> i'm running one right now. that kind of a critique, really again if you want to get to my small business versus yours, we're not going to get far here. we need to look at the national evidence. you guys have a point. what we find is minimum wage increases do not lead to the job loss effects you were going with. >> no -- >> yes, but they do. >> they affect all small business owners. >> they do have an impact on profitability. i agree with that. >>> i've got to get out. all i'm asking for is r

did that surprise you, jared?, i know that that's where the president and his housing team have been at for a while. by the way, just full disclosure, i used to be a member of that housing team a few years ago. it was very important for the government sponsored enterprises, that's fannie and freddie to grow to the size they did when private capital was absent the market. but private capital's been slowly flowing back in. there needs to be a balance where we take down fannie and freddie's role in the market and bring up the private capital role. but to me the critical thing he said in that part of the speech was that he still sees a role, a measured role, a role behind the private sector for a government back stop to support a 30-year fixed rate mortgage. that's a key distinction because there are those who would say no, we should just get the government completely out of the housing business. i think that would be pretty destructive. i thought he set forth a good balance there. >> jared, it's also critical for tho
