jared kushner just met with hamd bin salman earlier this week abroad. he is in the middle of working on his long-awaited middle east peace plan. so this is a high-stakes moment for jared kushner to have to be answering these questions about why they all tried to pretend it was a normal process when it definitely was not. >> and why did so many officials not want jared to get this clearance? >> that is unclear. there have been questions raised about his clearance from day one. on his original form, he left out key meetings he had with foreign officials and with some russians and then he later had to amend that form and said it was just a clerical error, no harm, no foul. there have been questions raised from the beginning about the meetings that he's had and connections with his family's business and foreign governments, but we don't know exactly what the fbi and the cia, what their hesitations were about granting this clearance to them, but we know that they raised them and that there was some concern about granting him this top-secret tssci clearance.

and we start with president trump, son-in-law jared kushner and national security. the "new york times" reporting that the president stepped in personally to get kushner top secret security clearance even after intelligence officials waved red flags repeatedly. then chief of staff john kelly carrying out the order but also providing a paper trail. sarah westwood is at the white house. sarah, what more have we learned about what happened and what is the white house saying about it now? >> brianna, obviously these new reports are raising questions about how jared kushner was able to get that security clearance, and whether top officials, up to and including president trump himself, deliberately lied about this process. just to give you a little bit of context here, kushner had his security clearance downgraded last year which meant he no longer had access to top security information, and that was a setback for him because he has such a broad portfolio. he's involved in everything and john kelly did push to get that top secret access restored. kelly, as you mentioned,

why didn't chief of staff then john kelly want jared to have this? why didn't don mcgahn, white house counsel at the time want him to have this? why didn't the fbi and the cia think that this was appropriate for jared kushner? >> so i should note here that according to our reporting, we reported this past last year, jared kushner and ivanka trump were very frustrated about the clearance issue when his clearance was downgraded in february of 2018 after a review of the clearance process they felt like john kelly and don mcgahn were targeting them for petty reasons, not for anything legitimate. the fbi and the cia during the course of jared kushner's background check had flagged concerns. among those concerns was that he had not disclosed initially open his application for security clearance some contacts with foreign officials, including a meeting with a russian banker during the transition. jared kushner's folks said that was a clerical error, that it was fixed overtime. but there was concerns flagged by intelligence officials about questions of wheth

one, that jared kushner had access to the presidents' daily brief. in that daily brief were numerous reports about saudi dissidents and he allegedly shared that list with the saudi crown prince. second, jared kushner has had meetings with the saudi prince without having anyone in our embassy there. that is not standard protocol. we know the crown prince most likely ordered the killing of khashoggi. we know his ordering the bombing of hundreds of thousands of civilians in yemen, and here there are serious allegations of what jared kushner is sharing with him. this is not a bureaucratic issue. this is a hugely sensitive issue about the highest national security of this country. >> and we know just from public reporting that one of the challenges that jared kushner likely had get ago clearance was the fact that he was in a lot of debt. he had a building here in manhattan that had a big balloon payment due. his father was reportedly looking -- helping him to look for ways to pay that bill. have you found in anything of those leaked documents, any of thos

>> funnily enough, jared and ivanka keep an apartment -- >> jared and ivanka trump, their new york apartment is in the same building as michael cohen. >> it is. they spend most of their time in washington now. they do have a shared apartment. >> so he goes down to the basement of this building -- >> and there are nine boxes that were returned to him. he goes through box number 1. it's kind of junk. box number 2, kind of junk. box number 3, it is jackpot. and what he finds in there are the financial documents from 2011, 2012, 2013. he finds a slew of handwritten notes from the president on articles, things ripped out from magazines and newspapers and printed out from the internet. the notes ranging from threatening -- michael c., threaten this reporter with a lawsuit. this story is terrible, call so and so. to an e-mail with allen weisselberg, whose name came up i think more than two dozen times yesterday. and the e-mail was about the reimbursements that cohen had received for the stormy daniels payoff. it reminded him, well, there have to be copies of these checks somewhere, not in this box,

specifically on jared, chairman cummings saying he was told jared used the private messaging app what'sy to communicate with foreign leaders. of course, raising the question, if potentially classified information might have been communicated, brianna. lowell, their lawyer, pushing back on that communication today, saying he never communicated that jared's communications over what's app were with foreign leaders specifically. >> so there are some people who are cooperating, there are some who are not cooperating with democratic investigations into the trump administration. tell us, who's who? >> that's right. a lot of movement here, brianna. hope hicks, she says that she will cooperate with the request coming from house judiciary. she will hand over documents in their investigation related to certainly her time with president trump. her time on the campaign and the white house. meantime trump's long-time confidante, roger stone, his lawyers say he's refusing to cooperate, won't produce any documents or appear before the committee for any interviews at this time. this flurry of activity n

"what does jared actually bring to the he have a security clearance?ie, how to answer brian both on the question of the security clearance and on his performance on the international stage? >> there's nothing that jared kushner brings to the table in terms of substantive expertise or history or knowledge of these issues that require he have a clearance and work on these issues. the president does have the ability to say jared, you are my guy on middle east peace, i want you to work on that. the president also has the authority to give him a security clearance over the expressed wishes of the intelligence community. but it raises two questions, the first is sure the president have done that? he had the authority, but was it in the u.s. national security interest to do so? congress is investigating that right now and hopefully they will get some answers. the second question it publicly. that is a problem i think for national security interest for the presidredibility. >> chris: when you say that, we should point out the president denied an interview in "
