of many, one republican leading the fight is president trump's son-in-law and senior advisor, jared kushner remember jared's dad went to prison and the pain of that experience gives him a personal connection to the issue. so even though jared and i disagree on a bunch of stuff, we joined forces this year to pass a federal justice reform bill and this month that bill could pass the senate and become law. so in that bipartisan spirit i invited jared to join me at cnn's first citizen conference. now fair warning, i didn't ambush the guy and start going off on him. you know, fireworks are easy. i wanted to give you something more useful in the long term. insight into how jared's brain actually works so i hope the following conversation helps you better understand jared kushner. >> i think that, you know, through your critics, for politics you have a very small resume and you have this big, big portfolio. what you say to people who say like what qualifies you to go and take on these tough issues all around the world? why should we have confidence in you to do all of this stuff? >> i think the fi

at which point jared kushner said, i have no idea what you're talking about. possibly refocus? and the attorney started again. then she started talking about how unfair it was for the adoption of russian children by americans. then my ears picked up because i was like, what is she talking about? why is -- what's adoption got to do with any of this? don junior stood up and said, i really don't know why you would address this to us. my father's a private citizen. i suggest you address it to the obama administration. they're in power. they can perhaps do something. >> goldstone says he ushered the russians out of the room. the meeting lasted about 20 minutes. >> i jumped up. i was like, thank you very much. thank you, goodbye, we have to leave, and i was horrified. >> the three russians who were at the meeting, have testified that don junior asked specifically about where the dirt was on hillary. do you recall that? >> no, not at all. >> did anyone in the meeting say, where's the dirt about hillary? >> no. >> so the russians are not telling the truth. >> if that'

the decision to cozy up with saudi arabia, jared kushner decisions. >> supposedly. i mean, i don't know. ultimately, listen, it's the president's decisions ultimately so i don't want to get the president off the hook, right? you're the person in charge, you ultimately make these decisions, but i also know as a chief executive of a real big state, you do rely heavily on the advice of those around you because there are so many decisions to make that you can't possibly dig into the details of every decision. and that's just a fact. i mean, there are times when decisions have to be made and the job of the governor or the president is to decide, okay, which one of these do i really have to dig in on? and which ones can i take the advice i'm getting and just execute on it because i trust these people? so i think that the president has the responsibility for it, but there's no question that the trump campaign reveled in the idea that they had no experience. they wore it as a badge of honor. and politically that was smart. if people were pretty sick and tired of washington

that aside, while jared kushner and ivanka trump want to be focused on issues at the g20 specificallyat new nafta agreement that was signed earlier this morning, something kushner had been involved heavily in. ivanka trump leading to head to mexico for the inauguration of the new president. there is the shadow of what you're talking about here as it relates to the russia investigation and the potential that they could face more questions hanging over them. >> so harry, here's what we know, jared has testified before congre congress. to our knowledge, ivanka has not. "politico" writes this, that someone so close to the major events under scrutiny would not be interviewed is unusual. but mueller's decision to steer clear of the first daughter, at least for now, is a sign of his don't poke the bear until you have to strategy. what do you think of that? >> so i think it's right, but i think there's a different explanation for donald trump junior. ivanka didn't testify. trump junior did, and he's been always the dog that didn't bark here. we haven't heard from him. i've always thought the

it was chris christie who put jared kushner's dad in prison. >> when he was the u.s. attorney he was in charge of the department that did file charges against charles kushner. that has always been a delicate relationship, but it was jared kushner who serves not only as a senior adviser on a lot of issues but a portfolio of prison reform is significant for him. he invited christie here. they have at times had a touchy relationship as our reporting has long indicated, but it is also many years since that time, and christie was a surrogate at times during the campaign, certainly had been the first prominent u.s. official to endorse donald trump. he of course ran for president himself and was out after the new hampshire primary. so it is a delicate relationship. it is something that when we go back and look at the issue of christie as a finalist in the vp running, the running mate stakes that we all watch so closely, the relationship with kushner was considered a roadblock at that time. mike pence was ultimately selected. christie was the runner-up if you will. expressed d

that emboldened them in trump's attacks and jared kushner secret communications and help prince mohammedbin salman purchase government using u.s. intelligence, right? jared kushner went there with use intelligence. 48 hours later every rich prince above mohammed bin salman had been arrested. including one of the richest men in the world, right? so this use of that information is a power politics dynamic that could not be bought before. and once that was done, combined with his tax on the press, they saw america going in a completely different direction, which is true. the way that they have always wanted to see america go. a nation that could be like their subcontractors, at the work over there as a subcontractor, could be bought, paid for and told what to do. and now they have done and it felt emboldened to get a u.s. resident from virginia who is a saudi citizen to send in an assassination team to abduct him and murder him, and they are surprised that we are getting upset. but they are just waiting for donald trump to get the deal. and it is a deal that is being cut because trump has a

if anybody else in the trump ecosystem, jared kushner, don jr.ody else for that matter did the same, they will be in the same position as michael cohen. as to whether or not the lies that have been represented in this information implicate the president, i don't yet see that connection. they've said in here that michael cohen lied and that he actually informed the individual one, president trump presumably, about information but it doesn't give us dates. it doesn't say after january when the president said it was the last time he heard about it. it doesn't say specifically in here that between january and june when this thing really ended the president was informed about that. so unless there's evidence that has yet to be released publicly or that i'm missing, it doesn't yet take me to the president being a public liar in a provable abuse of office sense or a kol usive relationship between the trump organization or the trump campaigns and the russians. it's not a good day as a public relations matter but as a legal matter, which is my focus, i do
