let's get more from cnn's laura jarrett in washington. >> reporter: well, good morning.the past several months, something of a pattern has started to develop here as republican lawmakers uncover a text exchange between the two former officials. the president tweets out a suggestion that the fix is in at the fbi, and the latest controversial appears to be no exception. congressman mark meadows has seized upon a text exchange from strzok to page in april of 2017 where he says to her, "i want to talk to you about media leak strategy with doj." the timing is something that the congressman finds troubling because it happens to fall during the exact period of time when the "washington post" and other outlets publishing stories about the fbi's surveillance of former trump adviser carter page. but strzok's attorney tells me it has nothing to do with that, and instead it was about a department-wide initiative to stop leaks to the media. a source close to page tells me it had nothing to do with anything about that. all it was is they were preparing department leadership at the jus

here's laura jarrett with more. >> reporter: friday's stunning developments outline in a series of memos from former fbi deputy director andrew mccabe sent a shockwave through the justice department as officials tried to contain the blast radius and keep rosenstein in his job. rosenstein, the number-two official at the justice department, issuing rare statements pushing back on the reporting and first one saying in part he believed there was no basis to invoke the 25th amendment to oust the president. and in a second, more forceful statement after a meeting in white house, rosenstein said, "i never pursued or authorized recording the president and any suggestion that i've ever advocated for the removal of the president is absolutely false." other officials familiar with the encounters between mccabe and rosenstein describe a chaotic scene after the firing of fbi director james comey and the significant amount of mistrust both sides that could be sort of coloring the interactions, almost setting the groundwork for how mccabe described their interactionses in his contemporaneous memos. no

evan perez is with us, justice reporter laura jarrett, as well. laura, what have you learned, first of all, about rosenstein's state of mind right now? >> well, wolf, it was chaos and confusion earlier over here today at the justice department. as officials were prepared for the deputy attorney general, rod rosenstein, to get fired by the president. but that did not happen. it all, of course, began on friday with that explosive "new york times" reporting led to conversations, we're told, over the weekend, where the deputy attorney general did discuss with white house officials about potentially resigning. but they couldn't get the details worked out. he wanted to do it on his own terms. he really cared about the timing, we're told. but the white house couldn't get on board. and so we're told today, wolf, he went into the white house, to that meeting with john kelly, expecting to get fired. but, of course, that is not what happened. and it appears he really overestimated, if you will, how angry trump was about that explosive story in the "new york
