here's kcbs radio's financial reporter jason brooks. >> reporter: good morning.ugust a very good month for auto dealers out there. the commerce department reports that overall retail sales were up six-tenths of a percent the best gain since april and half of that gain came from car and truck sales which were up 1.5% in the month before. that was the biggest gain for car sales since march. and the pace of sales is the best for auto dealers since the recession ended. also saw a strong sales for clothing, furniture, electronics, building materials and restaurants. department stores were on the soft side. >>> nevada has approved a $1.8 billion aid package for the gigafactory for tesla. the legislature says it will create up to 22,000 jobs and inject $100 billion into nevada's economy over the next 20 years. the biggest impact in that state since the building of a hoover dam since the great depression. stock market is down. so far, the dow down by 50. the nasdaq down 12. s&p down 6. back to you guys. >> thank you. jason brooks from kcbs news, thank you. >>> 15 minutes

. >> here now is kcbs radio's financial reporter jason brooks.good morning, frank and michelle. one of the first things that is done when the new iphones go on sale, different researchers take the phones and tear them apart. they want to know just what it cost apple to build the new devices. research firm ihs has done that. it turns out that while the 6- plus, the larger of the two phones costs $100 more than 6, it only costs $15.50 to build them most of the extra cost from the larger screen and battery. stands to be a big profit margin maker for apple. it did receive more than 10 million-dollar in sales in the first three days on sale for both of those new phones. its shares were up on that news. >>> mortgage mart is sliding a little bit as we see mortgage rates increase and mortgage apps fall down. the mortgage bankers association says its new home purchase index fell three- tenths of a percent while refi apps were down 7%. 30-year fixed loans were up an average of three basis points to 4.39% from the week before. couple of rough sessions on wa

here's kcbs radio's financial reporter jason brooks.d morning. >> reporter: good morning, frank and michelle. some mixed news on the economy. we'll get the bad out of the way. new home construction dropped off in the month of august. the commerce department says that housing starts were down 14.4%. that was mainly due to a big drop in apartment building. that was down 31%. single-family home construction fell 2.5%. it doesn't look like it will pick up soon. building permits were down by 5.6%. now, much better news when it comes to the job market. the labor department says first time unemployment claims fell by 36,000 down to 280,000 matching the lows back in the middle of july. the four-week average dipped below 300,000 and continuing claims fell to their lowest point since may 2007. that's good news after the weaker-than-expected jobs report in august. stock market also a off to a positive start this morning. the fed didn't change their language regarding interest rates. investors like seeing that. the dow had a record close yesterday

jason brooks.adio's financial reporter jason brooks. good morning. >> reporter: decent news on the economy. the gross domestic product was up 4.6% in the 2nd quarter. that was revised higher from its original take of 4.2% and you can chalk most of that up to business investment which is a good sign for the economy going forward in particular for job growth. businesses spent more money than commerce originally thought on new structures and on new equipment. >> yesterday we saw a big drop if the stock market. dow down 264. nasdaq down 2%. this came on a host of concerns including some profit-taking after the recent record run for the dow and the s&p. a big drop in durable goods in august andage down because of "bend-gate" with the i plus 6 plus bending when it's in the pockets and people sit down. apple shares down 4% yesterday. it is rallying today. the company says that the iphone 6 plus should wear just fine under normal circumstances. we'll see go forward. stocks in general are rallying after sel

. >> here now is kcbs radio's financial reporter jason brooks. good morning. >> good morning.lenty of smiles on wall street as ebay announces it will spin off paypal into a separately publicly traded firm next year. this has been something that ebay had been considering earlier this year activist investor pushed the company to do this. but it has resisted that. but in recent months they started changing its tune and paypal fast growing business. in the recent quarter its revenue was up 29% compared to ebay's marketplace growing by 12% to $2.2 billion. ebay's shares up over 6% in early trading on that news. >>> home prices continue to rise across the country. but not at the same pace they were before. case shiller index is out and top 20 cities up .6% in july from june. 6.7% from a year earlier. the bay area, the only top 20 metro area to post a monthly decline. down .4% although still up more than 1% from a year ago. stocks were aplite flat tarp this morning. a lot of concerns out there including the growing movement in hong kong. let's take a look at the big board and see how

. >> here now is kcbs radio's financial reporter jason brooks.ood morning. >> reporter: good morning, frank and michelle. labor says that jobless claims headed in the wrong direction this past week with first-time claims up 11,000 to 315,000. the four-week average up to 304,000, although continuing claims on their four-week average are down at their lowest level in 7 years. so the overall trend remains positive. the four-week average for first- time claims 7% lower than where they were a year ago. corte madera based restoration hardware turned in a fairly solid 2nd quarter revenue up 13% to $434 million but that just missed analysts' estimates. it's also providing full year forecast that's under what was expected and as a result its shares are down about 1%. the company has been on a roll over the past two years, its stock more than double. >>> stock market is pulling back after a positive session yesterday. let's check the big board and see how we're doing so far. dow off by 60 points. nasdaq down 15. s&p moving lower by 5 points. michelle and f

here's kcbs radio's financial reporter jason brooks. >> reporter: we always like to hear that prices going down. and we're really seeing that at the pump. the labor department's consumer price index for august fell two- tenths of a percent first decline in about a year and a half. you can chalk that up to energy prices down 2.6%, led by pump prices and natural gas. food prices rose two-tenths of a percent. over the past 12 months, consumer inflation up 1.7%. that's well under the fed target of 2%. and speaking of the federal reserve, it wraps up its two- day policy meeting today. and the absolute key for investors is whether or not the fed policy statement will include the phrase, considerable time" when maintaining its federal funds rate at the record low for six years. if it does take that language out, that could signal a rate hike within the next six months and we'll see how wall street reacts to that news if that happens. probably won't be all that good. the stock market has been built up over the past several years thanks to the fed low interest rates. let's take a look at the
