kcbs radio's financial reporter jason brooks has been track the downward trend and, jason, how long can we expect this to continue? >> michelle, the -- the scary answer is that nobody knows! that's the thing with the stock market. very hard to predict what's going to happen next. even though the numbers are ugly, that's decent improvement from earlier when it was down well over 500 points. and again, analysts are chalking this up to the big drop in oil prices, crude closing below $27 today for the first time since may of 2003. that is having an immediate impact on the energy industry. stocks in companies like chevron and others are falling. that's resulting in jobs being lost in the industry but it's also raising concerns about the health of the global economy. falling oil prices can be an indicator that demand is not so strong. in particular, coming from china. that's been one of the other big factors in the stock market plunge. not a whole lot of good news out there. the stock market off to its worst ever start for a new year, january on pace to be one of the worst januaries ever in t

and kcbs radio's financial reporter jason brooks joins us now. son, what's causing such a steep drop. >> reporter: frank and michelle, it's not pretty. it's not easy to look at our retirement accounts now. the dow and nasdaq each on pace for the worst month since the financial crisis back in 2008. two main concerns for investors right now. china and oil. we have seen china's economy continue to slow over the past year. the shanghai exchange has been pummeled as a result. it's now 20% lower than its high last summer. that so figuresly puts it into -- that officially puts it into bear territory and there are nears beijing isn't letting on how bad their economy is doing. in a number of moves to pump up the stock market, it has failed to materialize. the price of oil closed below $30 today for the first time since november 2003. that's great for us as we pay for gas. but for the energy industry it's bad news. stocks are falling for companies like chevron and job cuts have been heavy. according to analysts out there, we have lost about 250,000 jobs in

here's kcbs radio's financial reporter jason brooks. >> reporter: good morning.a story that seems to keep going in that direction as pc sales slide as industry researchers idc and gartner report a 10 and 8% decline in the 4th quarter. a lot of that due to the shift to mobile devices. also because a lot of pc owners have simply not been upgrading their pcs as often as they used to. now, both researchers think that we'll see more stabilization. idc even thinking we'll see slight growth in 2016 as more business customers upgrade to windows 10 and also more consumers user also have to upgrade pcs due to security and performance issues. apple bucking the trend. mac sales were up 3% in the 4th quarter. second straight quarterly increase for apple while other pc makers like hp, dell and lenovo have seen sales declining over the past year. stock market looking to build on yesterday's rally. apple helped out with a strong day and its shares were up again this morning. we'll see if they can lead to another positive session on wall street. we could use it. dow is up by more

. >> here's kcbs radio's financial reporter jason brooks. >> reporter: good morning.e putting out good news this morning saying its app store sales hit new records in the holiday quarter well over $1 billion. but investors aren't paying much attention to that instead a report from japan's nikkei news service that iphone 6s and 6s plus production will be cut by up to a third in the current quarter which would seem to indicate that sales have been falling. where the iphone goes so goes apple stock. iphone sales in 2015 represented two-thirds of apple's revenue in the year. apple stock is falling for the second straight morning as a result. getting some better news at least on the job market. private payroll tracker adp says there was a gain of 257,000 jobs in december. much stronger than expected. a big gain over what it saw in november. bodes well for the labor department report due on friday. but that's doing very little for the stock market this morning. another sell-off is in order after the brief respite that we had yesterday. number of concerns most of them global

here's kcbs radio's financial reporter jason brooks. >> reporter: lots of likes for facebook on wall street. the social networker just keeps growing by solid numbers. its earnings beat expectations. its revenue came in at $5.8 billion. a more than 50% increase from the year earlier. the user base up 14% from a year earlier to 1.6 billion. it's making even more money on mobile advertising and that's key as more of its users access the site solely through smartphones. while not breaking down numbers for instagram, mark zuckerberg said during the conference call that 98 out of the top 100 advertisers on facebook also advertised on instagram in the 4th quarter so facebook shares are going higher by 14%. ebay unfortunately is heading in the other direction. san jose company did meet earnings expectations in the 4th quarter but its marketplace business saw a drop and that's believed to be as a result of the growing clout of amazon and ebay shares are down by 11%. >>> better news on the job front after that spike in claims the prior week which secretary jobless claims to a 6 month high. the

here's kcbs radio's financial reporter jason brooks on a downer day for apple.i just took a look. >> reporter: good morning, frank and michelle. certainly if you are buying in today you're late to the party in regards to apple. there are concerns about its growth potential after the company reported that sales of iphones were a little under expectations in the recent quarter ipad and mac sales were down and it expected further slowing of iphone sales and in this current quarter apple expects its first revenue decline in 13 years. now, the company is still piling up massive profits. more than $18 billion in the recent quarter. but on wall street, it's all about future growth. that puts a lot of pressure on the iphone 7 when it's eventually released. the company's shares are sliding on that report. a palo alto company topped earnings expectations but it's worried about the current business client and is cutting 800 jobs about 100 less than reported by several media outlets this week. thanks to apple shares falling today and also an earnings report from boeing that

more now from kcbs radio's financial reporter jason brooks brooks. >> reporter: home prices in the bayea showing no signs of cooling down. according to the kay schiller index for november, bay area home prices were up 11% from a year ago. there was a gain of a three- tenths the month before weaker than october. overall the top 20 markets in the index up 5.8% from the year earlier. a lot of markets have regained the prices lost from the last housing peak price in 2016. the bay area is even with its market peace. other markets have set new highs. you can credit low mortgage rates also stronger hiring and the tight housing supply for the ongoing gains in home prices. procter & gamble reports after the closing bell today analysts are expecting another record quarter for iphone sales. but the growth rate is expected to slow significantly from the prior quarter and a year earlier. stock market lost more ground yesterday late in the session on falling oil prize. let's check the big board. oil prices on the rise helping out. the dow open 120 points back over 16,000. nasdaq gaining five and the

. >> here now is kcbs radio's financial reporter jason brooks.ood morning. >> reporter: good morning, frank and michelle. economic growth really cooled off in the 4th quarter in the united states. commerce department says gdp grew by only .7% down from 2% in the 3rd quarter. big reason for that consumer spending slowed down to 2.2% growth. consumers really do drive the u.s. economy. also, we saw the impact of oil prices in that businesses ordered much less equipment than in the prior quarter. and also, we saw another decline in regarding to mining companies and exports were really hurt by the stronger dollar overseas. growth in the current quarter not expected to be a whole lot better given all the volatility we have seen in the stock market and continued low oil prices. corporate earnings will drive the stock market today and one of those is chevron. the san ramon-based company impacted by low oil prices. the company's revenue down by more than a third from a year earlier. it lost over $580 million in the quarter. as a result, shares are falling
