jason carol was inside the courtroom this morning for that sentencing. there was just this outpouring of emotion from sandusky, from some of his victims. what did you hear in the courtroom today? >> reporter: i think what affected a number of people in the courtroom was when you heard the victims speak for themselves. you had victim five who stood up and addressed the court, crying, brooke. he walked up to the podium very slowly, did not look at jerry sandusky, he was just sitting to his right, a few feet away. he looked directly in front of him at judge cleland as he read a prepared statement, part of which said the sentence will never erase what he did to me, it will never make me whole. he must pay for his crimes. victim number four spoke as well. he was much more defiant and this is how he was basically throughout the trial when he testified. he was feisty on the stand, when he testified during trial, and he was, again today, when he went up to the podium, he looked directly at jerry sandusky, several times, when he gave his statement saying i want yo

our jason carol is in one of those neighborhoods. jason, tell us a little bit about the effort of the folks that are trying to pack up and get out. >> reporter: well, let's set thestein e scene for where we are right now. we are in lindenhurst, long island. this neighborhood is already experiencing some severe flooding here in this particular section. the reason for that is because you have the great south bay right behind me to the south there, and then you have canals crisscrossing through this area, so even though we haven't even seen the worst of sandy yet, you can see the waters are already thigh-high. this is the preeley family here. this is actually a street, not a canal. they got in their boat and decided final to get out. you were patient enough to wait for us. what made you finally make the decision it was time to go? >> the water was getting in the house. >> water was getting in the house? >> it's going to be worse later. >> i've been hearing from everyone here in the neighborhood that already what we're seeing here, the ef

carol. that's for sure. >> so jason carroll, and susan candiotti, stand by. bring in paul callan our legal analyst. we had heard the judge might sentence jerry sandusky up to 400 years in prison. he comes back with a sentence not less than 30 years, not more than 60. is this because of jerry sandusky's age? >> yes, i think that's an important factor. the judge is undoubtedly looking at the fact that even a 30-year sentence will probably mean that jerry sandusky will die in prison, and, you know, these sentences, these consecutive sentences which could have added up to over 400 years, while technically it might be a legal sentence, when an appellate court is looking at the case, it looks like a vindictive judge as opposed to a judge who is trying to be fair and reasonable in his approach to the case. so i think it sort of strengthens the hand of the judge in having the conviction upheld by doing this kind of a sentence as opposed to one of those off the books, huge numbers. >> i want to go back to jason carroll. i know jerry sandusky's wife was in the courtroo

cnn national correspondent, jason carol, is on long island, talking to residents of lindenhurst, new power, and residents in lindenhurst, still under a mandatory evacuation. you can see the reason why. dozens and dozens of homes still underwater. >> and i never expected anything like this. >> reporter: despite all the warnings and all the forecasts, it is still hard for people like paul ferrari to take in all the damage hurricane sandy left in its wake here in lindenhurst, long island. >> now that i'm here, i'm kind of surprised. a little shocked. a little humbled, because it was quite the storm. >> reporter: his feelings today, a stark contrast to his mood early yesterday, when we ran into him during one of our live reports. paul, won't you come on over here and talk to me for a moment. >> that's him in the scuba gear. today, no gear or gimmicks. >> such a change in tone, i guess, mood, or whatever you want to say. you know, kayaking earlier and scuba dive and have some fun and enjoy the storm. and then, now it's like the reality is just -- everything's just destroyed. >> reporter:

cnn's national correspondent jason carol is joining us from outside the courthouse. we heard from sandusky himself, some of the victims. what happened? >> reporter: lots of emotion inside the courtroom today, wolf, as some of sandusky's victims stood and got very emotional, teared up and talked about the abuse that they suffered at the hands of the former football coach. all the while while sandusky continues to say he is the only victim here. jerry sandusky arrived to his sentencing in a prison uniform, a uniform he'll likely wear for the rest of his life. inside he listened intently as three of his victims read emotional statements, victim five who was assaulted once in a locker room shower in 2001 cried as he told the court "the sentence will never erase what he did to me. it will never make me whole. he must pay for his crimes. take into account the tears, pain and private anguish." victim four who endured years of sexual abuse looked directly at sandusky and told the former football coach "i want you to know i do not forgive you. and i don't think i will ever fo
