our national correspondent jason carroll is there. he's got the latest details. ning, jason? >> well weerks can tell you, wolf, after speaking to a representative here that tsarnaev was brought here just about 5:00 a.m. this morning from beth israel hospital. he was brought here because he's now in stable enough condition and is able to sit up. he is a lot more responsive than he was just a few days ago. he went through something called an intake screening process. it's a step by step process, brought here in handcuffs by u.s. marshals. we're told the first step of that process is he was strip searched. right after that he went through a medical screening. obviously once again in stable condition. more responsive now than he was before. he went through a psychological screening to make sure that he wasn't in danger of hurting himself. i'm told here by a representative here that the result of that psychological screening determined that he was not in danger of hurting himself. he was also fingerprinted. a dna sample was taken from him as well. and then he was photo

i want to bring in jason carroll, who is at brigham and women's hospital. jas jason, the scene there, what are you hearing from doctor there is? what's the latest? >> reporter: let me just bring in one of the doctors here. this is dr. ron walls. so much has been said about the types of injuries that we've been seeing, you've been experiencing here at the hospital. can you give us the latest in terms of what you have? you have 28 patients that's up to 31 >> that's right. we have 31 patients. two would be considered very critical. we've had a total of nine that have gone to the operating room. so i've had surgery in all of those cases, major surgery, then we have the remainder that takes you to the rest of the 31. >> can you describe the extend of the injuries? we've been hearing bone injuries, tissue injuries. >> the worst of the injuries have been injuries to the legs. there's been a lot of damage, a lot of blast effects from these type of explosions, so a lot of injury to the muscle, the skin, the bones are broken, those sorts of injuries. the shrapnel has

jason carroll was in the campbel campbells' hometown of medford. jason, what are you learning? >> just a terrible story, wolf. like so many other stories. a little while ago patty campbell came out on her front porch, she tried to speak about her daughter but she was so overcome by grief, she just simply couldn't do it. the story, a tragic case of a mix-up. let me explain more about what happened to krystle campbell. she got caught in the first explosion. and then, wolf, shortly thereafter, taken to the hospital, and her parents were told that she was okay. that they were working, trying to save her leg. shortly after the operation, her parents came into the room and learned it wasn't her at all that had survived. it was her friend. so you can imagine how terribly awful they feel at this point. how they're trying to deal with the loss of their daughter, trying to deal with this tragedy. just a short while ago, patty campbell came out, tried to speak to the press, but eventually a spokesman had to say what she simply could not. >> we're heart broken at the death of our daughter

i want to go to jason carroll in boston live with new details. when you talk about suspect two, dzhokhar, today he spoke his first words at least as far as we are aware two investigators in a bedside hearing. what was the suspect able to tell investigators. people were saying because of the damage from a gunshot he may not be able to speak and only rely on writing but that doesn't seem to be the case. >> it was clear from today's proceeding he wasn't able to speak. it was clear from the transcript that we saw that he clearly understood everything that was happening around him. this first appearance was a bedside appearance at beth israel. we're told it lasted ten, 15 minutes. it happened 11:30 this morning. basically what happened is all the key figures entered the room. you have u.s. district court judge marion ballard, court reporter, attorneys on both sides and during the first appearance is where he learns about the charges he's being faced with, most notably using a weapons of mass destruction. in addition to facing the death penalty, if con

i will go to cnn's jason carroll at brigham and women's university. what can you tell me about what's going on at the hospital there? >> well, right now, the hospital is on lockdown. a hospital spokesperson telling me they are doing this out of an abundance of caution. they are not confirming at this point from the hospital about that so-called saudi national that is being at least questioned by some reports here at the hospital. i can also tell you that in speaking to some of the nurses and seeing some of the doctors that have come out of the hospital, describing it as just being a very emotional day. at this point, piers, 28 patients here at the hospital being treated. the most common types of injuries that they're seeing are bone injuries, tissue injuries, also injuries to the head. one of the attendants who came out a short while ago saying in the very beginning when patients started coming in, he described it as droves of ambulances coming here to the hospital, six at a time. of the patients that are here, eight to ten of them are in serious cond

let's goet to jason carroll joining us on the phone. jason? >> yes. i'm at the area of bailey road. massive police presence here above us. there is a helicopter. i look down the streets here, numerous police officers. i spoke to two folks out here. they said they were sitting on their sofa and they thought everything was fine. then they thought what they heard was approximately 20 shots. they heard ring out. they ran outside their home, ran down the street to where we are now. they saw a number of officers running down the street. and another helicopter now passing overhead. we're sort of being moved back a bit here. listening to the police activity how the here and the scanner traffic talking about a crossfire situation at one point. and mention a boat that is significant. there was no further clarification in terms of what that may or may not have meant. so as we're standing here now, police are keeping us back, again, helicopters overhead. a number of people here who are coming out of their homes are being kept back. officers telling people to be patient, to wait back there. the

jason carroll is standing by at a hospital from brigham women's hospital right now, where that saudi national is and where a lot of other folks are as well. the scene there has been extremely gruesome, extremely difficult. doctors dealing with as we said, ball bearings, multiple trauma wounds in various parts of people's bodies, often in various locations in one individual. jason, in terms of security at that hospital, what are you seeing? >> intense security here outside the hospital, anderson. as i stand here now, you've got members -- about 20 officers here, officers at the front door as well. this is a hospital that's on lockdown for reasons that at least at this point, the hospital spokesperson, tom langford, would not testify why that is the case. what we can tell you is from the emotional point of view, as one nurse left here, she said it's been an extremely emotional day, as you can imagine. emergency room doctors working, doing everything that they can. and i'm also getting information about the patients they do have, that they would talk about. 28 injured patients here. the

i want to bring in jason carr l carroll.m one of the surgeons earlier tonight who said there could be many more operations for some of the people there fighting for their lives tonight. >> just to clear things up, we're at brigham women's hospital. there are 31 patients here at this time. we spoke to dr. ron walls. he talked about the extent of the injuries they're dealing with. also spoke to a nurse who came outside and said it's been a very emotionally trying day for them. another said at one point the ambulances in the very beginning were coming in droves, erin. six at a time he said. dr. walls describing the injuries. mostly to the lower extremities. he also talked about the s shrapnel type injuries. he was trying to clear things up there. once again, even all the training he said most of these doctors and nurses had gone through, nothing experienced them for what they had to deal with tonight. talk more about the patients who are here, nine patients immediately put into surgery, two in critical. those two patients are v
