see what led up to this encounter, not that that would necessarily justify anything, but cnn's jason carrollng into all the details of this case. jason, what are you learning? >> in terms of this sheriff's deputy in terms of his past, jake, he's been both praised and villified in his past. just within the past hour or so, the school district held a press conference where the superintendent stood up and said after watching that video, he said it was both reprehensible and unforgivable. south carolina sheriff's deputy ben fields' job now in question, as are his actions. this after his violent takedown of a high school student was caught on camera monday. you can see the deputy tossing a female student to the ground, after she refused to get up from her desk, then throwing her across the classroom floor. parents stunned after viewing the video. >> most school resource officers are great people. they do awesome work in our schools. but this is a shame. to get a phone call that that would have happened to my daughter, i don't know how i would have responded. >> when you see a video like what we'v

jason carroll has been covering all of this for us. jason, what we learned from the sheriff is there is yet a third video, third video he shows the young woman, student, junior in the school, resisting, hitting the police officer, the sheriff's deputy in that classroom. that's new information. he's now providing. >> reporter: that is correct. we'll have to take a look. what it's going to come down to, even that 16-year-old student did strike at that deputy, was his response, the one you see there, what so many have seen now, was that response still appropriate? that's part of the investigation going forward. a couple of headlines came out of that presser, wolf. namely, that the sheriff's department holding its own internal investigation, which according to sheriff lott, should be completed by some time tomorrow, at the very least, within the next 24 hours. they've already interviewed the teacher that was there in the math class, in addition to that they've also interviewed the assistant principal there in the class as well. you heard th

jason carroll is following this for us this morning. son, do we have any indication as to what kind of suspect? any sort of profile of who police are looking for this morning? >> reporter: let me start with the details of exactly what happened here. this started at about 11:44 last night and when police first got the call and got details about the shooting that took place at zombicon in downtown ft. myers, florida. you see the video there shortly after the shooting took place. this is an event that taecketed thousands of people in downtown ft. myers. people standing shoulder-to-shoulder in the event. police were there as well and they were able to respond almost immediately. this is an event that is all about pictures so there were a number of people there as you can imagine who had cell phones who were ready to look at people and shoot people with different costumes and take a look at people with different costumes. one woman as you said was standing on her balcony when this all took place and she started rolling shortly after the shots

cnn national correspondent, jason carroll, had been following this story. son, bruce leonard accused his son of molesting children as possible justification of the beating. what more do we know from police about what justified the behavior? >> first, fredricka, we need to make it clear that police have discounted exactly what bruce leonard had told investigators. they say according to their investigation. he expressed interest in leaving the church and that's what led to the beating. there have been a lot of various reports about other allegations about what possibly has led to the beatings. in terms of what investigators are saying at this point official. we are trying to figure out what this is about. we are trying to find out more about the church and we are encouraging them to call us and fill us in and give us more information about this church. as you know, some people who live there in the community are calling this, saying it is not just a church. they are saying it is a cult. police are not calling it a cult. they are still looking very much for mor

cnn national correspondent jason carroll is live to tell us more. >> reporter: well carol, certainlyumber of people in this community feel as though that church was in fact a colt. but police are not calling it a colt. but they do say what took place inside that church was horrific. >> it happened in what was supposed to be a house of worship. this former school building in new hartford new york now home to a church with a small following called "the word of life church." two young members were brought to the sanctuary for a counseling session to discuss their spiritual state. 19-year-old lucas leonard and his 17-year-old brother christopher. >> the session turned physical. both brothers were continually ask for forgiveness. >> no word on what their alleged sins were but the 19-year-old was beaten so badly, police say members of the church brought him to a hospital where he later died. his 17-year-old brother remains in serious condition. their parents, bruce and deborah leonard, were arrested and charged with first degree manslaughter. both pleaded not guilty. four other church memb

jason carroll, cnn, new york. >> all right.nting students and the resource officers at their campuses. i want to first bring in hln legal analyst and criminal defense attorney joey jackson along with harvard law fellow o'neal joining me here in atlanta. thanks for joining us. what should have happened here? you look at dreing the line of keeping a student safe and discipline, what's the answer? >> it's really simple. especially what we've seen with the influx of school resource officers in schools, the teacher are relying on them for discipline. the officer should not have been called. >> how should she have handled them jt student was not going to move apparently? >> the student was not posing any violent threat in the classroom. she could have handled that in a lunch break. pbis has strategies for detention. this particular student, apparently, based on reports, needed some type of counseling. this was some type of report that could have been handled after class. >> she should have left her there, even though it was disruptin

cnn's national correspondent jason carroll joins us with the very latest. what do we know, jason?ill a lot of questions about what exactly happened before the arrest, but one thing is clear to the students who were there in the classroom. moments after that officer entered the classroom, it escalated to a disturbing point. >> either you're going to come with me or i'm going to make you. >> reporter: south carolina school police officer ben fields seen here is on administrative leave this morning after his violent takedown of a high school student was caught on camera monday afternoon. you can see the sheriff's deputy tossing a female student to the ground after she refused to get up from her desk and then throwing her across the classroom floor. >> give me your hands. give me your hands. >> we don't want everyone to rush to judgment, but also feel that the video was very, very disturbing. >> according to police, the richland county student was asked to leave the classroom. when she refused, fields was called in to arrest her for disturbing class. school officials say the video is,

jason carroll following it all, jo joining me now.n in terms of surviving both of these. >> this is the second time that spencer stone has found himself in a life-threatening situation. the situation took place in downtown sacramento. i have spoken to police about what happened. apparently this all started as a dispute between two groups of people, which may have started at a local nightclub. stone was out with four of his friends when they got into some sort of an argument with two other men. that somehow led to a fight. apparently a passer by called police at 12:46 a.m. pacific time. the caller say iing that someon was hurt. when police arrived they found stone had been stabbed several times in the upper body. they also say it sounds like alcohol was involved. just a few hours ago, police gave a description of the suspects wanted in connection with the stabbing. detectives say stone was not specifically targeted because of his heroic actions in france and this was not related to terrorism. again, stone was one of five men who helped

cnn's jason carroll has the lat he is. >> reporter: the case surrounding what happened inside this churchice call it a savage beating although the motive for the beating still somewhat unclear. bruce and debra leonard did that testify during the hearing today. instead, they sat and listened to damaging testimony about what alledgedly happened in that church counseling session. in the end, their 19-year-old son lucas was dead. their 17-year-old son christopher left in serious condition. daniel irwin, a deacon at the word of life christian church, told the court he saw bruce leonard strike both of the boys inside the church's sanctuary. he said leonard hit his son lucas several times. i heard the sound of a strike. stop. then it started again. irwin also told the court he saw lucas was bleeding from his leg, moaning and rolling back and forth on the floor. irwin also saw leonard strike his uniyounger son five or six times with something that looked like a belt. he recalled the beating went on for 14 hours starting around 8:00 sunday night and lasting until 10:00 a.m. the next morning. when
